I suspect DS asked the police to confirm before the press conference that it was the father they spoke to, to put the rumours that DS were lying to bed (by confirming that yes, DC lied about his family not having been spoken to, but that it wasn't DC they spoke to).

The police statement being released now also (1) attempts to shift the focus of the questions onto the police visit as opposed to DC's actual behaviour and (2) forces press reporters to scramble to update their prepared questions in an attempt to confuse things and try to maintain the upper hand.
