To not understand the outrage at Dominic Cummings?

Please don’t flame me for this. I’m not posting this to be controversial. I am someone who always tries to see the good in people which has been to my detriment at time’s in the past so I’m very well aware that maybe I’m missing something here and being too kind when he possibly doesn’t deserve it.

My understanding is that Dominic Cummings is saying that he only returned to Durham on one occasion which was because he had fears about potentially being unable to look after his child if him and his wife both ended up too unwell with Covid. I can understand the logic in that.

I appreciate the government advice at that stage was to stay home but if he genuinely didn’t have anyone to help with his son, then I can understand his fears and that he was trying to put his child first as any parent would.

My understanding is that a matter of days after, the government did clarify that travelling in the event of needing support with children if you had caught covid was an exceptional circumstance and that travel in that instance was acceptable.

I personally live hundreds of miles from family and don’t have anyone I could ask for help in the local area was I to become unwell with Covid so this does resonate with me.

I understand that there were sightings of Dominic Cummings on other dates in Durham which indicate that he travelled back up there. If this is true, I definitely agree that he needs to be sacked, but at this stage, there is no proof of this.

Am I missing something here?

A 60 mile round trip is impressive to test the eyesight.

It was 30 minutes not 30 miles. Not the same thing in rural areas.
He was testing more than just his eyes.

He stopped for 15 mins because he felt sick.

trellishead · 25/05/2020 18:48

Is no one going to mention the article his wife wrote about them surviving lockdown in London, later turning out to be completely false as they were not even in London on the days mentioned. Sorry but the whole thing makes it so blindingly obvious what crooks they all are.

lilgreen · 25/05/2020 18:49

Yes the article was brought up by a journo in the garden.

sleepingpup · 25/05/2020 18:49

He didn't go to a beauty spot. He drove a half hour down the road from home, stopped briefly on the outskirts of a town, then drove back again. Barnard Castle is a town as well as a castle.

' stopped briefly'

ah it's all in the telling isn't it. except they sat by the river. which is where they were seen. too bad.

lilgreen · 25/05/2020 18:50

Oh @wrinklin are you so blind? Perhaps you should drive to Barnard Castle.

trellishead · 25/05/2020 18:50

Crooks

The80sweregreat · 25/05/2020 18:50

He said he didn't know what his wife had written or something.
Handy that

FliesandPies · 25/05/2020 18:52

One of the journalists asked why his wife had written an article implying they were in isolation at home. Cummings replied his wife was a writer and he didn't get involved in what she wrote.

Of course you don't Dominic, even when it's about you. Hmm

And actually we only have DC’s word that they were river 15 mins. Could have been longer.

SharonasCorona · 25/05/2020 18:54

He stopped for 15 mins because he felt sick

And yet we’ll enough to undertake a 5 hour journey the next day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/05/2020 18:56

I had Dc as a Malcolm tucker type before. But not now.

A cynic would say he was given enough rope to hang himself & he duly obliged.

wrinklin · 25/05/2020 18:56

@sleepingpup ah it's all in the telling isn't it. except they sat by the river. which is where they were seen

The road runs along the river!

I'm from the north east by the way, so know the area a little.

No one asked what he was doing in the half an hour he was late to the briefing

The80sweregreat · 25/05/2020 18:56

Wow, I get it I do and you sound lovely but he had the whole of Downing Street and other colleagues he could have asked : nannies were working still : he had family near by. He had other options open to him.
I do believe they both panicked a bit but to drive miles and miles was silly : he wanted to be near family but didn't we all?
We were told not to go out etc etc. There were guidelines but none of them said ' drive miles up the A66 ' or whatever.
I do understand how hard it's been for people with kids but it has been hard for millions of people with kids and they stuck to the rules of lockdown.

chomalungma · 25/05/2020 18:57

It was 30 minutes not 30 miles. Not the same thing in rural areas

Have you been to Barnard Castle?

Do you know where it is relative to Durham?

DressingGownofDoom · 25/05/2020 18:58

The PM will make some big announcement tonight to try to take the heat off DC.
Pity DC has insulted the media, and as such they'll continue to hound him til he goes.

hammeringinmyhead · 25/05/2020 19:00

Funny, isn't it, how he drove to Barnard Castle with his wife and child instead of roughly 30 miles to Park End in Middlesbrough.

SharonasCorona · 25/05/2020 19:01

I'm from the north east by the way, so know the area a little.

@wrinklin Sorry but I’m going to trust the AA over you, which gives journey in miles between North Lodge and Barnard Castle.

The road runs along the river!

And?

still begs the question of getting out and sitting for '15 mins' on the riverbank when you are doing a 'test' drive.

I've never been anywhere near there.

chomalungma · 25/05/2020 19:05

I'm from the north east by the way, so know the area a little

I am from the North, so me too.

What does Google say for the distance from Durham to Barnard Castle. To the river
