To not understand the outrage at Dominic Cummings?

Wow123 · 25/05/2020 08:08

Please don’t flame me for this. I’m not posting this to be controversial. I am someone who always tries to see the good in people which has been to my detriment at time’s in the past so I’m very well aware that maybe I’m missing something here and being too kind when he possibly doesn’t deserve it.

My understanding is that Dominic Cummings is saying that he only returned to Durham on one occasion which was because he had fears about potentially being unable to look after his child if him and his wife both ended up too unwell with Covid. I can understand the logic in that.

I appreciate the government advice at that stage was to stay home but if he genuinely didn’t have anyone to help with his son, then I can understand his fears and that he was trying to put his child first as any parent would.

My understanding is that a matter of days after, the government did clarify that travelling in the event of needing support with children if you had caught covid was an exceptional circumstance and that travel in that instance was acceptable.

I personally live hundreds of miles from family and don’t have anyone I could ask for help in the local area was I to become unwell with Covid so this does resonate with me.

I understand that there were sightings of Dominic Cummings on other dates in Durham which indicate that he travelled back up there. If this is true, I definitely agree that he needs to be sacked, but at this stage, there is no proof of this.

Am I missing something here?

Well done journos!

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 17:38

With respect, you're lying Dom

Strangerthantruth · 25/05/2020 17:38

This is all about driving up the M1? Incredible.

Speedqueen2 · 25/05/2020 17:38

@sharonascorona perhaps because he's getting a barrage of questions and isn't usually on the receiving end of extended interrogations? Have you ever messed up an interview question? I have. I agree, it's easy to say he's stumbling and not particularly concise, but he's under pressure. Don't insult me though, no need.

Socksontheradiatoragain · 25/05/2020 17:39

He didn't just go to see his parents, which would be bad enough, and some politicians had to resign over that sort of thing.
He actually drove over 250 miles, knowing they had covid symptoms. Is it any wonder that the North East has a high infection rate?
Of course it's 'that bad'!

lilgreen · 25/05/2020 17:40

Hello Mary!

So he had a timeline of events but couldn’t remember if he stopped for petrol on the way back? Utter tripe.

And it’s ok for you to tell me ‘fucking listen’ but I can’t tell you you’ve missed the point? 😂

I've got corona, can I drive over 250 miles? I have corona and can't see properly, can I drive and walk around in public areas?

Ulver · 25/05/2020 17:48

We have one of the highest infection rates in Europe. We will be in lockdown for longer because our govt is a shambles.
This is going to get very nasty before the govt show any iota of responsibility. Undermining the police by lying and then pressuring them to change their statement? Undermining the PM by making decisions without consulting him?
This man’s ego and lack of accountability is endless.

nokidshere · 25/05/2020 17:48

Of course you can if you think that's the best thing for you. Who is going to stop you? It's just that most of us, thankfully, wouldn't. There are plenty who have though as we keep hearing on here, in the media, everywhere.

People who were tossers before this are still tossers now and will still be tossers afterwards.

PlumpkinPete · 25/05/2020 17:49

The decisions he made meant that his wife and son ended up having contact with medical professionals in Durham, potentially spreading Covid more quickly from a highly affected region (London) to another. That's exactly why people were asked not to travel to second homes.

He thought it would be better to have family support nearby if him and his wife were both too ill to provide childcare at the same time. But as it turned out they weren't both too ill at the same time so he took that risk unnecessarily. Obviously he couldn't know what would happen, which is why the guidelines recommended staying at home and getting local support when it's actually needed (through local authority hub if necessary) rather than everyone moving around the country on the off chance that it might be better.

Nothing he said changes those facts.

I have sympathy for him as a human going through a tough time and if he'd come out earlier and said, "sorry I thought it was for the best but I now see I shouldn't have travelled" it would all have blown over

wrinklin · 25/05/2020 17:52

@ulver: He didn’t get tested? Why not?

At that time tests weren't available to everyone.

And his DC's "piss in the woods" was after he was already cleared to return to work so they were no longer infectious by then.

Er, no you can’t, you could be fined. But apparently not if you’re the elite.

lilgreen · 25/05/2020 17:54

Don’t travel to other areas because it puts those hospitals at risk.

could being the operative word. I know of lots of people who have travelled over the past 8 weeks and not one of them has been stopped and asked where they were going and why.

Alsohuman · 25/05/2020 17:55

Well that really helped. No apology. No regret. Arrogant tosser.

Ulver · 25/05/2020 17:55

He was the govt minister in charge of making Covid policy and he didn’t have access to testing? Wtaf?
He has exposed the absolute incompetence of this govt. He doesn’t answer to Boris. Who does he answer to?

Strangerthantruth · 25/05/2020 17:57

Weido libdem on now whinging about a man driving up the M1.

Did they also help think up ‘stay home’ mantra?

poster deliberately missing relevant points Grin

nokidshere · 25/05/2020 18:00

And what's all the nonsense about 'well he broke the rules so other people think they should/can too' about? That's akin to our parents saying say 'well if X jumped off the cliff does that mean you will too'.

I have no intention of putting myself or anyone else at risk just be DC was stupid enough to do so.

LumaLou · 25/05/2020 18:00

They should have stayed in London. Does anyone else find it shocking that he revealed that they accessed emergency services while in Durham? Thus potentially spreading the virus to another area.
