Did Boris Johnson just call us all bad parents?!

Having watched that briefing I am incandescent with rage, less at what Cummings did - I understand people might have needed to make difficult choices and compromises during lockdown - but at the excusing of it. Why not admit it was an error of judgement and apologise?

I have three children. When my husband and I both became ill with what we believed to be Coronavirus in mid-March, we took turns to watch the children whilst the other slept. I lay on the sofa, feeling the illest I have ever felt, while CBeebies played on loop. We relied on neighbours we barely knew to drop off essentials. We would have loved to lean on family but we didn’t because we believed to do so would endanger them and the wider community.

A succession of ministers - and now the Primeminister himself - have suggested that Mr. Cummings behaved as any loving parent would. But many loving parents did not behave as he did. We struggled and made sacrifices in what we believed was the National interest. Are they now suggesting we just don’t love our kids as much as Mr. Cummings loves his?

Boris Johnson is not stupid. Far from it. So he will know how this will go down with the public. However, he is evidently driven by something more important (to him). He also knows, unfortunately rightly, that it will all die away and we will ultimately forget about it.

I disagree, this is really fucking damaging, have you seen social media? my facebook feed is FULL of fuck you Boris

AnyOldPrion · 24/05/2020 21:44

Oh and also... this is probably a useful smokescreen and the longer the fuss goes on, the better the camouflage. In twenty years time, someone will notice that the NHS has been sold off to one of their buddies during this episode, or something of that ilk.

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:46

I think it is extremely reckless of the government to be confusing people and saying that if they have Covid 19 they can travel if they want to or feel that they should - very reckless!

One of the core ways we will keep the pandemic contagion down is not to be spreading coronavirus! It is basic stuff. When you are ill, you are highly contagious.

maresydoats · 24/05/2020 21:47

21st century Rasputin without Tsarina Alexandra. That's what he appears to be to me.

Inoneminute · 24/05/2020 21:47

Oh dear, did Boris mutter something about specific health issues? There's a suggestion on Twitter that the child has severe autism and can only be cared for by peope he trusts. Would/does that change the complexion of the whole story?

megletthesecond · 24/05/2020 21:48

Yep. We sucked it up because we didn't love our kids enough 🤷‍♀️.

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:50

Listening....the guidance said early on that you could travel to make safeguarding arrangements. That's what he did.

That is just not true at all.

People could travel to stay in one place, before they had Covid 19.

So someone could choose to go and live in lockdown with their family. They would go, and then stay.

People were told very very clearly that if they had covid19 they were to self isolate - so not only stay in one home but stay in one room in the home!

BlackberryCane · 24/05/2020 21:51

The word safeguarding has taken a great deal of abuse during this episode.

OceanOrchid · 24/05/2020 21:52

Would/does that change the complexion of the whole story?

No. If necessary, the childcare should have travelled to the infected person. A bit like me dropping medicine at my mums, rather than her driving to pick it up. If showing symptoms you and your household stay at home, and support comes to you.

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 21:52

"Oh dear, did Boris mutter something about specific health issues? There's a suggestion on Twitter that the child has severe autism and can only be cared for by peope he trusts. Would/does that change the complexion of the whole story?"

I did wonder if that might be the case.

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:52

There's a suggestion on Twitter that the child has severe autism and can only be cared for by peope he trusts. if that is true that would enrage me even more! I have a child with severe SN and we had to risk assess early on how we would care for them within our household. At no point did I even consider going to my family for childcare if I got ill!

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 21:53

"At no point did I even consider going to my family for childcare if I got ill!"
Why not?

TabbyMumz
Are you being paid per post?
Cummings has gone back and forth to Durham from London several times.
His wife wrote an article implying there were in London
He danced in the garden at his mum's 71st party
he took his family to the beach for his wife's birthday

four legs bad
two legs good

"No. If necessary, the childcare should have travelled to the infected person."

What if they cant drive? There are lots of scenarios we dont know about here. The childcare might not have been able to go to them. Their parents might have needed assistance too, the child may need certain type of assistance. We cant presume to know the ins and outs of their family scenario.

Soen · 24/05/2020 21:56

I thought these lockdown rules where enforceable by the police.

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:57

Because I would have spread coronavirus?!

I have a science background and know very well that this is not an acceptable risk. To knowingly pass on virus! If we both had to be hospitalised then social services would be called in as they should and then we would have considered family. Not if we were at home.

So sorry... should I have not cared about passing on the virus to family members and let myself off the hook of childcare when I was well enough to drive? It would have been so much easier for me to do that.

I should have just ignored government directions and my own knowledge that I would be spreading the virus from one region to another, one family to another, citing that I had a child with SN to just let me off the hook. Obviously that is what I should have done. How silly of me...

Experimenopause · 24/05/2020 21:57

They really do need to fuck off. What about all the rest of the population, especially single parents, who are having to make do with what they have in hand?
This keeps getting better and better. Hmm

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:58

@TabbyMumz are you a DC social media bot?!

StayinginSummer · 24/05/2020 21:59

@Experimenopause I really agree. I would be so mad if he used the SN card, so mad!

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 21:59

Listening....you dont know any of these things are true. There has been several occasions over the years where witnesses have had sightings of things that just turned out to be not true, like people seeing missing people in places when they had been murdered the week before.

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 22:00

Look at all the sightings of Lord Lucan!!

BlackAndWhiteCat01 · 24/05/2020 22:00

and now the Primeminister himself - have suggested that Mr. Cummings behaved as any loving parent would

The irony that the PM has the cheek to pretend he knows how a parent should behave Grin

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 22:01

"TabbyMumzare you a DC social media bot?!"
Of course, if someone disagrees they have to be a DC media bot?!

TabbyMumz · 24/05/2020 22:02

"ExperimenopauseI really agree. I would be so mad if he used the SN card, so mad!"

He hasnt though has he? Hes just kept his private family interests, private!!
