Pubs doing “takeaway” alcohol

Just saw a notice on a neighbourhood website advertising that a local pub is doing takeaway pints this weekend. I can completely understand why a pub would want to do that. BUT, let’s be honest, people buying the “takeaway” pints will not be buying them to take them home. They will want to stand outside in the sun to drink them with friends - that’s the whole point. And that seems to raise all sorts of issues - like crowding outside the pub - and sorry to raise this again - LACK OF TOILETS!!!

Pubs are required, as a condition of their licence, to provide toilets - because drinkers need to go, even if they have bladders made of steel... I am just glad I don’t live near the pub in question as I would not want the front of my house being used as a toilet.

@MMarie.. I drink in a micropub. It is tiny, cash only, no music, no phones, no food. It opens for 4 hours a night 5 days a week, 6 in summer. I pop in with the dog for a half at 5pm a couple of times a week - I pretend it's part of his socialisation training Smile

While I am there I order a couple of pints to take out. DH has a take away waiting when I get home, having had a pint of real cider in 'his' pub (my micro pub has none of that fizzy stuff).

It works for us Grin

Ta @wipeyourpawsplease

Old enough to drink, old enough to know when to stop. Also old enough to have enough business acumen to know the supermarkets generally only stock well known national brands and not the smaller suppliers.

LEELULUMPKIN · 23/05/2020 17:04

Sorry to disappoint you @shushymcshush but I am defending the pubs and drinkers and I am virtually teetotal.

Not all of those who have a different view to you are dipsomaniacs.

And you might want to get off that high horse or your "chavvy" (snobby much) ndn will be able to see even more of you from their garden bar. Cheers!

shushymcshush · 23/05/2020 17:06

funny

Figgygal · 23/05/2020 17:07

Our village pub is doing this when they open for takeaway meals 2 days a week
They always did have the cartons anyway so it’s not new for the village Which wouldn’t lend itself to people wandering round with them as you describe

MagnoliaJustice · 23/05/2020 17:08

Our local pub opens for an hour each afternoon for takeaway sales, you have to preorder and prepay (via their facebook page), then wait at the door, social distancing, to collect the ale in a sealed container to take home. It's a lovely way to support a business and the Lemon Dream or Huckaback IPA beats a tin of supermarket lager any day. No-one is gathering in the street or pissing up the wall. God knows what kind of area you live in, OP, it sounds awful. Grin

HotDogGuy · 23/05/2020 17:10

YABU there’s an ale house by me that has always done takeout beer. Lots of people take away to drink at home normally and more are doing so now.
There will be people that don’t socially distance whilst drinking takeout beer but they’ll likely not socially distance anyway

Maria1921 · 23/05/2020 17:20

Wine bar near me has set up a counter in a doorway and is selling wine by the glass to people who then drink it standing on the public pavement.

Fluffybutter · 23/05/2020 17:21

On another note .. my local tap room has run out of Rhubarbra Streisand extra custard Sad

PeppermintPasty · 23/05/2020 17:22

My friends run a pub (I don’t drink, they love me!) and they have been doing this for a few weeks. It seems to work well, they deliver to their loyal fan base at their homes as far as I can see from Facebook. Then said customers post happy photos of themselves supping beer in the back garden and so on. Real ale and all that sort of stuff.

I think it’s enterprising of them.

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/05/2020 17:23

It's far from niche, both the UK and USA have seen a craft beer boom over the last 10 years.
There are over 1000 more breweries in the UK than there were in 2010.
Pubs, cider houses ( West Country) and small breweries have always done off sales round here.
Now, it's the only option they have.
Unless you want the future to be nothing but Wetherspoons and tied houses belonging to the big breweries, support your local.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 23/05/2020 17:27

We only have one chain pub in our town, the other 8 or so are all independently owned, a lot of the locals are friends with the pub landlords so obviously want to keep their businesses alive. We also have two local breweries and a local distillery that we definitely want to keep going through lockdown and the alcohol from there is a lot nicer than what you’d get in a supermarket. Most of ours are doing takeaway, a few of the ones on the outskirts of town/surrounding villages have turned themselves into corner shops too which has been great for people who don’t drive and haven’t been able to get deliveries

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/05/2020 17:29

Exactly. Don't understand why you'd not just get a beer from the shop?

Because I enjoy a variety of real ale which is what my local pub can give me PLUS I get to support a local independent small business. He has actually sold takeaway beer since he opened a few years ago and we often bought those as well as drinking “on site”. Beer from a can or bottle simply isn’t the same.

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/05/2020 17:34

Do your duty!

Pubs doing “takeaway” alcohol
highmarkingsnowbile · 23/05/2020 17:35

Doing it to support local businesses I can get, but logistically it doesn't really work.

Works for many. Local is just down the road. Shop is 2.5 miles away. Real ale is lovely to drink, it doesn't go flat walking down the road Hmm.

BubblesBuddy · 23/05/2020 17:36

My DD tells me her local in London is doing take away beer. It’s on a garden square and everyone positions themselves around the square at socially distanced intervals! She’s been quite excited by it! Thank God for enterprise! They are wondering if socially distanced boule might be possible which is the other activity the square hosts!

wipeyourpawsplease · 23/05/2020 17:45

@Fluffybutter, but do they have Dame Judy Quench? A personal favourite of mine. Had the Northern Monk CBD beer this week. Interesting!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/05/2020 17:46

@MadameMarie

It's freshly pulled when you buy it at the bar and sit down at the bar and drink it. Not to take it out and then drink it at home.

It takes me less than ten minutes to walk home from my little local pub. I can assure the ale tastes just great when I get it home. The beers are all from local independent breweries and constantly changing. This pub sells ale and some artisan cider, no lager. When open in “normal” times it also sells a small selection of soft drinks but they aren’t bothering with those at the moment because it IS cheaper to get the exact same thing from the supermarket.

We picked up six pints yesterday, four pints of pale ale and two pints of porter. I’m currently enjoying a lovely glass of pale ale which was brewed just a few miles away in a brewery with the same name as my town. It cost £3 a pint and you can’t get it in the supermarket....

Fluffybutter · 23/05/2020 17:54

@wipeyourpawsplease No sadly not !
They do have Juice Forsyth though so may try that this weekend 🍺

Timekeeper1 · 23/05/2020 17:57

Filling a milk bottle container? Don't they sell bottles and cans at the pubs where you are?

I thought this was a joke at first. Imagine filling a milk bottle of postmix beer when you can just buy a couple of bottles.

wipeyourpawsplease · 23/05/2020 18:16

Ooh not tried that @Fluffybutter

@Timekeeper1, I'm certain you aren't a beer aficionado. We've just drained a 4 pint milk carton of Polly's Brew Spur.

SunflowerSeedsForever · 23/05/2020 18:17

Its fab

Our local delivers to you Fri, Sat, Sun- luscious cocktails, beers, wine etc.

SunflowerSeedsForever · 23/05/2020 18:18

Not to take it out and then drink it at home.

Most craft beer fans probably have there own growlers
