Pubs doing “takeaway” alcohol

Notcontent · 23/05/2020 15:02

Just saw a notice on a neighbourhood website advertising that a local pub is doing takeaway pints this weekend. I can completely understand why a pub would want to do that. BUT, let’s be honest, people buying the “takeaway” pints will not be buying them to take them home. They will want to stand outside in the sun to drink them with friends - that’s the whole point. And that seems to raise all sorts of issues - like crowding outside the pub - and sorry to raise this again - LACK OF TOILETS!!!

Pubs are required, as a condition of their licence, to provide toilets - because drinkers need to go, even if they have bladders made of steel... I am just glad I don’t live near the pub in question as I would not want the front of my house being used as a toilet.

Special lids on the plastic jugs keep the fizz in. Been around for years. Remember the Firkin pubs? They did this back in the day.

longearedbat · 23/05/2020 15:57

You sound a bit like the pub police @Notcontent - 'needs to be managed appropriately' and 'mindful of their licence conditions'. pubs (and hundreds of other businesses) are struggling to survive. If they can do anything that will stop them going to the wall, then good for them.

NuffSaidSam · 23/05/2020 15:58

'Exactly. Don't understand why you'd not just get a beer from the shop?'

Because the pub offers other/better beer/drinks.

You want to support local business.

You'd like the pub to still be there after lockdown.

But if you'd rather the shop, then you absolutely can. They're not bringing in a compulsory pub visit order!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 23/05/2020 15:58

I'm in NYC, where loads of restaurants are doing take-away booze. I got a frozen margarita to go for our socially distanced walk yesterday. It was fab. I also somehow managed to not piss in the street or start an enormous gathering Hmm.

weebarra · 23/05/2020 16:01

We have a great small brewery locally. You can get growlers full of beer or take your own for them to fill. It's a good idea and gives them an income.

ihatelockdown · 23/05/2020 16:03

Lots of pubs near me have been doing this and no one has stood around outside drinking! You've just assumed something and starting another antagonising thread! 🙄

MadameMarie · 23/05/2020 16:04

Why would you want to takeaway a pint from a pub when you could buy 4 sealed for the same price at the off-license/supermarket/co-op?

There's no reason why you'd want to do that.

SimonJT · 23/05/2020 16:05

@MadameMarie The supermarkets don’t sell the ale or cider that we drink.

weebarra · 23/05/2020 16:08

Yes, Madame Marie, that would be fine if we drank Carlin's or whatever but not everyone does!

lyralalala · 23/05/2020 16:09

We like what they sell at the pub, it’s much quieter than the supermarket so safer and, mostly, we want to support a local business

MadameMarie · 23/05/2020 16:10

@SimonJT Fair enough if it's only a particular drink that you like, but the idea of travelling to a pub to order a beer poured into a milk bottle (as the example before) to take home and pour into a glass, seems ridiculous.

For one thing, people don't tend to just have one beer. If they want one they'll want several. It's a lot easier to just walk into a supermarket or off license and buy however many cans or bottles and save a bunch of money anyway per drink.

SoupDragon · 23/05/2020 16:10

The one doing it near me is a micro brewery. I'm going to hazard a guess that you can't buy that in the local supermarket!

Fluffybutter · 23/05/2020 16:12

Lies .. we have been getting takeaway beer from our local tap room every Saturday, we bring it home to enjoy over the the weekend.
Most people take it home and not every one is out there breaking lockdown

rayoflightboy · 23/05/2020 16:12

Where I am ( Dublin) this has been going on a while.Only difference is delivery only for alcohol.

Fluffybutter · 23/05/2020 16:12

I’ve obviously had too much this weekend!

MadameMarie · 23/05/2020 16:13

@weebarra Plenty of outlets where you can get a wide variety of beers/real ales etc, you don't have to go to a pub.

Doing it to support local businesses I can get, but logistically it doesn't really work.

Leflic · 23/05/2020 16:14

Our pubs too.
Uses up their beer which is just sitting there.
Mostly sold to locals who can’t be bothered to queue up outside Tesco’s for a non essential alcohol purchase.
Keeps the staff employed.

Our local pub is also a shop which also sells flour, eggs, yeast , baking soda, chocolate and meat.
Bloody handy.

Alsohuman · 23/05/2020 16:15

Exactly. Don't understand why you'd not just get a beer from the shop?

Because beer in a can is entirely different from freshly pulled draught beer.

KrisAkabusi · 23/05/2020 16:15

I see you haven't out a poll up for this. I think if you had you'd see most people think you're being massively unreasonably. Just because you seem to be clutching your pearls at the idea if people wanting a pint doesn't mean everyone else is.

mindutopia · 23/05/2020 16:15

As long as they are firm with people, that all sounds fine. Our local pub has been doing takeaway food and drinks for weeks. All fine. You order in advance. You get a collection time. Pay by BACS. Then you arrive and someone brings it out to a table outside, puts it down, walks away and you go collect. We've only ordered food and bottles of wine (because we live outside the village, not walking distance, obviously I'm not carrying an open pint in my car). They do have a beer garden across the road with a playground, but people have wisely kept out and quickly headed on home. I would imagine it depends on how many idiots you have where you live though.

Because the taproom sell beer they brew themselves, not fosters from Tesco

wipeyourpawsplease · 23/05/2020 16:16

I think you're wrong OP. A number of the small bars I usually spend time in have all been doing takeaway (at the door or 1 in 1 out). People are buying to drink at home because these bars offer beers of a quality you can't really get at a supermarket. Also it's way of supporting your local independents. If you want to get tanked walking along the road or in the park, you've been able to avail yourself of the supermarket fridge throughout lockdown.

HugeAckmansWife · 23/05/2020 16:16

Very clear that some posters in here don't drink beer if you can't see the difference between a real ale from a pub and stuff in tins from a supermarket. Many places around me are doing this and I go to some lengths and distances to support them so they are still here in a few months.

rayoflightboy · 23/05/2020 16:16

Ours do frozen cocktails as well. And a good selection of food. Its nice to support your local.
Plus a pint of Guinness from the pumps is gorgeous.

longearedbat · 23/05/2020 16:16

@MadameMarie there is no comparison between beer in cans or bottles and a well kept real ale from pub cellar. I love the beer in my local (which is from a nearby brewery) but I haven't had any beer at all since lockdown started as I don't like it bottled or canned.
To ayone who has got a pub that currently sells it from the barrel - does it still taste as good having travelled home in a container? If so, I will have to make some investigations locally. Sadly my nearest pub shut up shop in March and no-ones been seen there since.
