OH is going on about I’m spending too much and buying too many clothes for DS.

I have

X6 vests
X5 sleepsuits
X3 sleeping bags
X2 pajmamas
X2 jeans
X3 jumpers
X4 tracksuits
X9 t shirts
X1 coat
X2 trainers

I really don’t think that’s too much at all

How much do you buy?

OP posts:
Springtime003 · 23/05/2020 21:39

Loads. About £100 a month each For 3 toddlers.

Need lots as get grubby. Won’t by cheap shoes. Need lots of different coats in UK

Echobelly · 23/05/2020 21:42

I buy v little for DS as I get hand-me-downs from a friend with a slightly older son. DD is nearly 12, she's got loads of t-shirts from my nieces, but I have bought her some trousers and shorts lately as she's had a growth spurt. I don't tend to spend more than £20 on anything except shoes and coats.

AllForAnEasyLife · 23/05/2020 21:43

I think I’m mistaken about my amount. I’m going to go through a years worth of bank statements and total it up as I’m curious

EmeraldShamrock · 23/05/2020 21:46

It is definitely age dependent. I buy DS a few nice tops and trainers all his joggers/trousers are a fiver whereas DD is older she likes H&M Newlook Nike etc
I like her to feel clean and proud.

AllForAnEasyLife · 23/05/2020 21:54

I could only go back 3 months as I’ve swapped my credit card and shut down my old one.

But for 3 months it came to £1640. This does not include shoes, coats or school uniform.

ImperialLeather00 · 23/05/2020 22:11

I’m soo ashamed but seeing this has made me realise my son has too many clothes....I’ve always known I over buy but this has confirmed it. Not done my spring clean yet so are def shoes/coats and some items that I could probably start to donate.
Son is 7.
Just went to count (as not like anything else to do!) and found this:

Shoes
Trainers: 10
(Really embarrassed but this, as found some that were perfectly in good condition that I forgot he had, he literally only lives in 2 at the moment. 2 were bought for him that are the next size up so he hasn’t worn yet. But def pairs that need to be given away).
Sandals: 2
Crocs: 1
Wellies: 1

Tops
shirts:18
(Was shocked by this but in my defence a mix of long sleeved, short sleeved, rugby tops)
jumpers: 22 🙈
(Again, a mix of warm, thin, fleeces etc)
Hoodies: 3
Long sleeved tops: 4

Bottoms
joggers: 3
jeans/trousers/cords: 15
(Was shocked by this)
shorts: 9

Coats: 10
(A mix of 2 rain coats, non rain coat with hood, coat without hood, 2 padded winter coats, cardigan coat, gilet, blazer and a denim a jacket).

All clothes are donated to my local church or to family and friends once he outgrows them so always go to someone in need.

ChangeOfName2020 · 23/05/2020 22:16

Depends how your finances are set up.

When I had DD, I went way overboard buying designer gear. But it came out of my money so DP couldn't complain (not that he did-and all bills were shared equally etc)

But when we split, and I took on a mortgage as a single parent I couldn't afford to dress DD the way I did. So I shop at Tesco and Next now mostly, but buy shoes from Clark's, Uggs and Nike.

Now I get called scum, or Pikey hahaha

Point of my post is, why can't you agree with your partner what you're going to spend (and when) and who's paying for it?

LittleLeaps · 23/05/2020 22:16

My children both have far, far too much but I dont spend all that much, I have just been lucky that they don't seem to grow very much (they are healthy but tiny, my 4 year old has a coat she has had since she was 2 that still fits nicely, and my 1 year old still wears 0-3 clothes) and they get given lots of clothes 2nd hand. I buy quite a few bits I like from charity shops - you can get amazing quality, barely worn clothes for pennies! Some even have the tags still on. I tend to buy more expensive brands like frugi/kite when they have sales on or for special occasions like birthday presents. I see no point in spending fortunes on very young children though because most do grow very quickly.

Abbccc · 23/05/2020 22:17

for example my ds 13 is in medium men's and a size 12 shoe, so one outfit for him cost a couple of hundred. wow Another, what does an outfit that costs a couple of hundred pounds include?

ImperialLeather00 · 23/05/2020 22:19

All mostly bought in sale from high street and online. I tend to make sure he always has a pair of Clarks, geox, new balance and converse all hunted on eBay or in the sale/outlet store. Coats I like to invest in esp as needs school coats a specific colour etc usually from joules sale/joules outlet on eBay or second hand north face. I also tend to buy out of season so i buy his winter stuff now when it’s cheap and same for the summer in the winter.
Always buy a generous size so summer stuff from last summer fits now etc, next summer will refresh again etc. sandals, boots need refreshing every season etc.

iusedtohavechickens · 23/05/2020 22:27

This is my daughter 6-9 month wardrobe not including vests and babygrows! 😖

How many clothes do you buy for your kids, and how much do you spend?
BlueGreenYellowRed · 23/05/2020 22:30

Primark seems to disintegrate after 2 washes.

What snobby nonsense! I've plenty of Primark baby/toddler items that have been worn and washed many times and will shortly be passed down to DC2. They might not "look new" anymore but they're perfectly fine.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 22:34

Are you washing them in stomach acid? I've Primark clothes, towels, bed linen, tea towels. All wash perfectly fine.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 22:35

iusedtohavechickens

The quantity doesn't bother me here - but I'm dying to dig in and sort it all out Grin love the heart boxes underneath.

Shmithecat2 · 23/05/2020 22:39

About £100 every 2 or 3 months. Mainly from H&M, and TU jeggings (the only ones that fit my beanpole ds). I love buying him clothes and shoes. Shoes are from Bobux or Clarkes.

anothermansmother · 23/05/2020 22:41

@Abbccc usually a T-shirt, tracksuit pants and a tracksuit jacket. Usually dsquared or northface, occasionally Nike or Hugo boss. I buy what he likes to wear, so some things are more expensive whereas others are cheaper.

tinyhouseliving · 23/05/2020 22:41

All of my DC's clothes (except coats, hats n scarves) in an average sized chest of drawers, have one drawer each and then a small top drawer for their underwear. I fold everything Marie Kondo style (although I was doing it Long before her to be honest!) I have to and I'm happy to!

theworstwife · 23/05/2020 22:44

I think it works out about £70 each a month for DS 5 and DD 1 including shoes and school stuff. I always get carried away

DelurkingAJ · 23/05/2020 22:47

DS1 (7) has (roughly, and in addition to school uniform):

  • 8 pairs boxers
  • 10 pairs socks
  • 6 pairs trousers (including joggers)
  • 6 pairs shorts
-20 tops (long and shorts sleeves)
  • 5 jumpers
  • 1 winter coat
  • 1 fleece
  • 1 waterproof coat
  • 1 pair trainers
  • 1 pair sandals
  • 4 pairs PJs
  • 2 swim shorts
  • 2 rash vests

I probably have to replace the shoes every six months and everything else annually. All goes to DS2 and onwards to DNeice or (collared shirts and anything else true boy only) to DFriends. Mostly from supermarkets or John Lewis. Father Xmas brings character tops etc...Mummy buys plain! (Father Xmas always brings pants and socks and gloves...I’m a big believer in stocking presents being more than one hit wonders (don’t worry, they get little Lego sets and books and magazines and random toys in there too!)).

CuteOrangeElephant · 23/05/2020 22:47

I do whole outfits only and almost exclusively from Frugi Blush.

For next winter I already have all my DDs clothes.

She has 9 whole outfits (so tops/bottoms or dress/tights), 1 Christmas/party outfit, 1 cardi, 1 autumn coat, 1 winter coat and 1 snowsuit.

I could be a bit more minimalist but I got carried away in the sales. All of this was bought in last year's sale for next year and I spent 350 on it, but I know I will be able to sell it well so net it is more like 200.

Pyjamas I make myself. I wish I could say that is cheap but organic fabric is expensive Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 23/05/2020 22:48

But for 3 months it came to £1640. This does not include shoes, coats or school uniform Wow I'm jealous. How much stuff do they have.

LipsyGirl · 23/05/2020 22:54

I bought DS one pair of converse high tops & one pair of vans.

Based on what everyone has said clearly it’s not too much. Lots of people have loads more. DS goes to nursery x3 days per week so I spend about £40 in George to buy clothes I don’t mind getting ruined

OP posts:
TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 23/05/2020 23:19

we buy as and when needed

i have had to to buy adult clothes though for years, since oldest was 12,youngest 8 so more expensive than basic kids clothes

15 y old is 6ft 3 and needs a 35 leg but is only a 30 waist, hes nearly 11 stone so not thin just has a small waist
so i can only buy off jacamo, which is simply be male version
hes also a 12 shoe so difficult to get from the shops

the 9 y old is already 5ft 3 and 145 pounds hes in large clothes and a size 6 shoe(a 7 soon)

TheLette · 23/05/2020 23:24

Once lockdown is over I recommend nearly new sales for nursery (and regular!) clothes. You'd get a whole load of stuff, much better quality brands than George and much much cheaper than £40. Secret is to travel to the nearly new sale is the poshest area close to you :) I've bought some lovely stuff in nearly new sales - the last one I managed to get an absolutely gorgeous Burberry cord teal skirt for £5. Looked brand new, I can honestly see no signs of wear at all (and usually you can with cord once it's been washed). The quality of it was astounding, these skirts normally sell for £300+ new. That won't be going to nursery for sure! The same lady was selling Boden, Frugi etc. I was in seventh heaven. I generally come back from the sales with a massive bag of stuff for no more than £15 and all excellent condition and brands, sometimes even new.

AllForAnEasyLife · 24/05/2020 07:20

Emerald

I don’t feel it’s a huge amount, it’s mainly from the children’s salon, frugi, mayoral, Hatley, Boden which bumps up the price
