To think that Dominic Cummings DID break the rules?

LumaLou · 23/05/2020 13:41

The day after reportedly developing coronavirus symptoms, Dominic Cummings and his family travelled 200 miles to self isolate.

While I can understand the desire to be near family, AIBU to think they should have isolated at home?

Many families in the UK have faced situations where sticking to the rules has at best inconvenient, at worst traumatic. They have managed to do so with less of a support network and less resources at their disposal than the Cummings family.

Yes he did. If someone develops symptoms they do not leave the house, along with the rest of the household who should isolate for 14 days. And then they wonder why members of the public are breaking lockdown rules.

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 16:25

Of course he broke the bloody rules, the arrogant prat.

Faced with having to look after his own child when his wife was sick, and with the possibility he might get sick - whatever else was he to do? (Why, what the rest of us mere mortals do, unless we're on our absolute death bed, and sometimes even then - manage to feed our kid, feed ourselves, look after our sick partner, and put Peppa Pig on loop).

10 Downing Street should realise it doesn't matter if it thinks he didn't break the rules (apparently a number of the Tories also think he did), it will not be able to convince the vast majority of the public that he didn't, regardless of how many times it reiterates it, and it should be aware that this is a very dangerous situation in which to loose the goodwill and good faith of the public.

I can only imagine that given how utterly out of his depth Johnson is, he's doing everything in his power to ensure he, and his corrupt cronies are utterly unelectable in the next election. The first thing they've managed to really excel at.

AuntyRigsby · 23/05/2020 16:25

If Cummings keeps his job (which he will) it's a national disgrace.

To be fair it really even register! After the last few years I'm not sure it's possible to reduce British credibility any further Grin

knittingaddict · 23/05/2020 16:25

Scarf Lady that is one newspaper report of the rules at the end of March. This is from the Government website in February:

What does self-isolating mean?
If you have been told to self-isolate, you will need to get to the place you are going to stay using your normal mode of transport, once there remain indoors and avoid contact with other people. This will prevent you from spreading the disease to your family, friends and the wider community.

In practical terms, this means that once you reach your residence you must:

stay at home
not go to work, school or public areas
not use public transport like buses, trains, tubes or taxis
avoid visitors to your home
ask friends, family members or delivery services to carry out errands for you - such as getting groceries, medications or other shopping

The above is the advice that I remember. Can you clarify when the advice changed to exercise being allowed for people with CV symptoms and when it changed back again to it not being allowed? I'll see what else I can find.

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:28

Today's daily update to me is clearly focused on making excuses for Dominic Cummings that both the presenters have to me now lost much credibility.
With Shapps maybe not a surprise.
But Jenny Harries is a disappointment.

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 16:30

My God, this is embarrassing to watch.

When is Bozo going to front up and do some of his own shovelling of their shit?

Cummings is very adept at goings, isn't he?

knittingaddict · 23/05/2020 16:31

Sunday 15th March:

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-self-isolation-the-latest-advice-for-anyone-with-covid-19-symptoms-11957486

Says don't go out even for a walk.

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:31

I delivered food to the door step of two different families who they had coronavirus. Both with no family locally.
But they had friends - like me - who were only too willing to help.
Do they Cummings family have no one within 300 miles to help?
Hard to believe.

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:33

Sorry for the typos. Will put out my glasses on my nose now instead of my head!

knittingaddict · 23/05/2020 16:34

This is the link to the government advice from 20th February that I mentioned earlier:

publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/2020/02/20/what-is-self-isolation-and-why-is-it-important/

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:35

@mbosnz
Mortifying!
Did they stop to go to the loo?
For fuel?
And if they'd had a puncture?
Or an accident.

The daily updates so far have been good.
This is awful.

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 16:36

I'm getting quite furious at the utter contempt being shown for the British population - apparently we're gullible, have extremely poor memories, and are illiterate to boot.

BentBastard · 23/05/2020 16:36

The bit of the story that rings the most true is that Cummings had no friends to help.

7to25 · 23/05/2020 16:38

What interests me more is just what that man knows. Labour should be killing him. Starmer should be forensic and lethal.....and it's left to the SNP?
What have the rest of them done that they don't want the sheep to find out about?

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:38

Was the child really seriously at risk?

Port1aCastis · 23/05/2020 16:38

Schapps is really floundering and the bullshit is astounding

mbosnz · 23/05/2020 16:39

My God, they really should just stop, this is embarrassing. This is utter bullshit, that they're expecting us to swallow happily as if it were prime beef fillet.

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 23/05/2020 16:40

Shapps definitely drew the short straw.
I repeat my earlier comment.
From a politician it's bad - possibly not unexpected. I am shocked that a medic is assisting with the party line.

YappityYapYap · 23/05/2020 16:43

Yes he broke them and actually did a terrible thing. He broke isolation rules and potentially exposed others. Can a child sit in a car for 4/5 hours without needing to stop for a pee? Can you drive 264 miles in a larger car without once having to get fuel either before you go or during the journey? Unlikely. You don't leave your house when you have synptoms or have been exposed for the specified period of time. He did

ScarfLadysBag · 23/05/2020 16:44

@knittingaddict I don't have time but if you look there are similar articles on the Scotsman and Telegraph at the same time. It was also debated on here, and if you search you will find discussions of it Smile

ScarfLadysBag · 23/05/2020 16:46

Have the rules on self isolation and exercise changed? (Again?) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3888547-Have-the-rules-on-self-isolation-and-exercise-changed-Again

One of the posts on here about it. Perhaps that poster still has the screenshot!

LumaLou · 23/05/2020 16:46

The clinical advice from Dr Jenny Harries at the daily briefing seems clear - when someone has symptoms, the household should stay at home and isolate unless there is a risk to life- i.e safeguarding issue.

I guess we can all now do as we wish and justify it as safeguarding.

OP posts:
LumaLou · 23/05/2020 16:47

I seem to have misunderstood the rules

OP posts:
TheSultanofPingu · 23/05/2020 16:49

It's a classic case of 'Do as I say, not as I do'.

ScarfLadysBag · 23/05/2020 16:50

Ah here we go:

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-on-coronavirus-16-march-2020

'So, first, we need to ask you to ensure that if you or anyone in your household has one of those two symptoms, then you should stay at home for fourteen days.
That means that if possible you should not go out even to buy food or essentials, other than for exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others. If necessary, you should ask for help from others for your daily necessities. And if that is not possible, then you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies.'
