Do you believe that shellfish feel pain?

Just been talking to my mum on the phone and we got to talking about stuff from childhood including our seaside trips. She used to buy two or three live crabs and boil them when we got home.

I was always horrified by it as a child and thought it was horrible. I'm still uncomfortable with the idea as an adult.

It seems that it's recommended to kill crabs/lobsters now before cooking.

Potting, if managed properly, is a non destructive form of fishing. I would rather eat a crab caught in a pot and humanely killed than a fish caught by trawling that then dies on deck.

I think salmon farming is an appalling cruel practice and I’m surprised animal rights don’t make more of a fuss about it.
Chicken farming is also completely unacceptable.

HeatherIV · 24/05/2020 18:23

I don’t know - is a seal keeping crabs in cramped conditions, gassing their babies to death at a day old, and funnelling them just the thousand into slaughterhouses? Animals in the wild kill what they need out of necessity to survive. It’s so far from our current farming methods that I don’t see how any reasonable comparison can be made between them.

As I said those are exactly the reasons I don't eat meat.

But we're talking about crabs not farmed livestock, and whether it's barbaric to eat them. I'm merely pointing out that catching a wild crab and then stabbing it in the brain stem is more humane then what a seal will do to it.

I want to eat animals and their by-products

What their poo? Grin

tilder · 24/05/2020 19:41

@HeatherIV that is pretty much what a lot of animals do eat. It gets called filter feeding (eating whatever floats in the water) or less pleasantly detritus feeders (the crud that floats about on the bottom). A lot of it is poo. Or bits of rotting stuff.

Dreeple · 24/05/2020 21:56

Pig byproducts is ham and salami innit!

HeatherIV · 24/05/2020 21:56

@tilder

I well aware of how filter fish and molluscs feed. It was a joke about a human wanting to eat human by product.

HeatherIV · 24/05/2020 21:57

Sorry a human wanting to eat animal by product.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 24/05/2020 22:39

Well inevitably if you eat shellfish you do end up eating a bit of poo sometimes.
But I'm really referring to milk & honey...

HeatherIV · 24/05/2020 22:48

Doesn't noro virus come from eating oysters that have been feeding from sewage run off.

Plankton live of whale poo then the whales eat the plankton.

Dreeple · 25/05/2020 00:05

Norocorona disease came from bats that ate Chinese people.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/05/2020 11:58

You can contract E Coli and other conditions from eating contaminated shellfish; it's why I'm always a bit Hmm about people foraging for mussels etc at their local beach.
But I think you're more likely to catch norovirus directly from a human.

HeatherIV · 27/05/2020 16:41

But I think you're more likely to catch norovirus directly from a human.

I saw somthing and the guy was saying norovirus always spikes after valentines day from people eating oysters.

Personally I think if that is true raw oysters should be banned. I don't want to end up with noro because someone thinks oysters are sexy.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/05/2020 09:50

Oh well, if you saw some guy saying something, then yes let's ban oysters.

Just to make it worse, oysters can get herpes.

HeatherIV · 29/05/2020 12:34

Oh well, if you saw some guy saying something, then yes let's ban oysters.

I think it was countryfile. He was an oyster catcher.

Only raw oysters. Raw chicken is banned for simular reasons.

wowsaid · 29/05/2020 12:45

Anything that is alive, had the ability to feel pain.

All those poor little broccolis being eaten alive

Dreeple · 29/05/2020 19:17

HeatherIV: He was an oyster catcher

They do murder a lot of molluscs, those black and white feathery bastards!

Dreeple · 29/05/2020 19:19

wowsaid: All those poor little broccolis being eaten alive

To eat a Brussels sprout is to rob a cabbage of its young.

smellllycat · 13/06/2020 00:29

Of course they feel pain, like all animals that people needlessly kill for their own stomachs. If this bothers you, then go vegan. No animals want to die and there's no nice way to kill one.
