THE CLAP. Let's settle this. If you work for the NHS, what do you think of it?

YABU = I'd rather it stopped now.

YANBU = I still like it.

Yes it's yet another Clap thread, sorry. But all the other threads seem to be populated mostly by people (me included) second-guessing what NHS workers actually want.

Non-NHS workers: if you can, please sit on your hands for this thread. No sneaky voting just because you have strong views on the matter. Wink

BIL hates it. He’s an A&E doctor, every week they get tons of completely avoidable injuries in. And the people coming in expect some super special treatment as they “got injured supporting the NHS”. The majority got injured because they were drunk idiots

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/05/2020 08:26

@TildaKauskumholm Only one that I know of, here.

@myself2020 PMSL - how do they manage to injure themselves? Sore hands?

Come to think of it, I bet there have been a few fireworks injuries.

@lisalisa read the thread! Or at least read the last ten or so posts before yours. Not all, but most of them are by or on behalf of NHS workers explaining exactly why they don't like it.

For those not voting - so, far 647 votes and 94% YABU.

@jesusinthecabbagevan thanks, yes the media should publish this kind of thing every day.

mrsswayze · 25/05/2020 08:45

It was nice to start with it think it's run its course now. I'd rather have a pay rise or bonus

weaselwords · 25/05/2020 08:46

27 years NHS. I don’t clap but my husband does. I can’t articulate why I don’t properly, but it’s something to do with it feeling twee and patronising.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/05/2020 08:56

@TildaKauskumholm I wonder if any of the papers would be willing (say this coming Thursday) to devote themselves entirely to letters from NHS workers directly to Dominic Cummings, gently explaining that if he so much as dares to show his face at 8pm, he'll have a ventilator inserted up his arse sideways.

(On a serious note, and I won't say anything more on that subject so as not to derail, but IF he is still in post on Thursday, all eyes in the country will be on him at 8pm.)

NHS here - I’m over it

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 09:48

DH and 4 other family members are NHS, 4 hate it and one is ambivalent.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 09:55

Reasons DH doesn't like it apart from just being twee and embarrassing are that he is doing his job that he gets paid for, some folk clapping aren't that lucky. Just like before covid, not all nhs workers are dedicated and selfless. Same as any workplace, most just doing a job, some going above and beyond, some going through motions and some lazy shites. Funnily amongst his colleagues, the ones lapping it up are at the bottom end of the dedication chart. A lot of the staff are doing less work than they ever were, wards are half empty and have double the normal amount of staff.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/05/2020 10:07

It was lovely at first, really lifted my mood.

Then one Thursday I came home after a terrible shift, my workload had increased dramatically, all my colleagues were exhausted and tetchy and on edge, I'd extended all of my shifts and hardly slept in between them. I popped my head out of the door so my daughter could clap because she enjoys it, saw my neighbours all standing close to each other sharing a bottle of champagne and I went inside and started crying, I couldn't help it.

They then all gathered together in the street for VE Day and have given up on any kind of distancing apparently, but they still clap for key workers every Thursday. It's an empty gesture.

As for everyone else, if they enjoy the clapping, go for it. It's become politicised now, unsurprisingly. The only colleagues I have who enjoy it are the glory hunters who keep asking for medals etc. I'd settle for not having a pay freeze and not worrying that I'm bringing corona virus home every time I leave work.

Elsiebear90 · 25/05/2020 10:14

I loved it the first time, it made me cry, but as the weeks and months have gone on I’m getting tired of it. It also feels hypocritical considering most of my area voted Tory, we don’t need claps, we need adequate funding and a pay rise. Instead of doing organised claps and painting rainbows do us a favour and stop voting for the tories.

Dances · 25/05/2020 10:31

I thought this was a thread about venereal disease

Babyroobs · 25/05/2020 10:53

I worked in the NHS for 30 years until recently but I do not like the clap.

Dances · 25/05/2020 11:40

I can imagine it's not pleasant Grin

3rdNamechange · 25/05/2020 12:34

I do , I don't like it. Never have.

3rdNamechange · 25/05/2020 12:36

Also , agree with pp, wish companies would give free stuff tofood banks.

Thecazelets · 25/05/2020 12:39

I'd rather we were paid and equipped properly and people showed their support for the NHS by not voting Tory.

Like teachers I have always worked hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime and provided my own equipment and resources.

Thecazelets · 25/05/2020 12:40

I also wish people would remember that the NHS is not a charity and should be properly funded from taxation. Seeing it as a charitable cause 'run on love' is a very slippery slope to go down.

Bienentrinkwasser · 25/05/2020 12:42

What engages me is that my neighbours who are so vehemently keeping the clapping alive (messages on the village WhatsApp group and Facebook every week... It’s a tiny place, we don’t have much going on so it’s a welcome break from ’gypsy watch’ tbh 😂) are staunch Tory voters.

Bienentrinkwasser · 25/05/2020 12:43

Enrages, not engages!

myself2020 · 25/05/2020 20:16

@JesusInTheCabbageVan fireworks injuries, falling of things (walls, stepladders etc - you must be seen to do it properly ), getting between car and wall when somebody else leans on the car horn and doesn’t pay attention to details like brakes, hit in the head by pot banging family members, falling over (sitting all day and then frenetic clapping and screaming ->faint) apparently
