To be outraged at this price increase?

I was reading an article the other day about baby formula prices and how families struggle to afford it then today I have noticed several shops have increased the price of all the Aptamil products.

I assume other brands will follow and it just seems outrageous with the current crisis and so many people getting less or no pay.

A lot of companies seem to be cashing in on the fact supplies are running low of certain items so AIBU to think Aptamil have jumped on that bandwagon or is this an innocent, albeit poorly timed, price increase in line with inflation?

EU Regs prevent first milk ever being reduced through promotions etc, the lack of advertising is actually a bit counter productive as brands such as aldi which are cheap aren't allowed to openly say 'the UK has such tight guidelines that (aside from a few of the specialist milks) we are nearly identical'- buy me and save money. Not completely relevant to the thread but eurgh. How about a government tax that is earmarked for breastfeeding support, maybe then this lets make the parents lose out on information and promotions to save a few quid because then no one will BF will lessen. It isn't overly outrageous I suppose that it rises as food does in general, I did find with the brand we used the price varied even between supermarkets.

Well butter is butter, more or less.

If this link works, then you can see the packaging, this isn't exactly like I remember, but I remember the labelling about it coming from the EEC as it was at the time.

Don't know why the picture is in black and white, we did have colour photography in 1980s Yorkshire.

Celestine70 · 22/05/2020 20:35

I'm 50 and when I was a baby it was free on prescription. Why isn't it free given babies need it?

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/05/2020 20:39

A likely story.

Chachang · 22/05/2020 20:40

@Celestine70 you can get some formulas on prescription if you baby has to use a specific one, and there are vouchers for those on very low incomes which can only be used for certain things- formula is one of them. Unfortunately that still makes it a struggle financially for many, but for a plethora of reasons they can't or don't want to breastfeed (yet still get the but it's free, as if because you're poor you shouldn't have access to the same choices as others have).

MrsT Grin

We also had asparagus that grew every year like weeds in our garden but we didn't know that it was a desirable edible vegetable and just let it overgrow into tall fern like plants. DM did say she thought it was edible but I think we hadn't even experienced broccoli at that time Blush.

genius1308 · 22/05/2020 21:07

Aptamil is the most expensive formula on the market. Cow and gate is one of the cheapest. They are both EXACTLY the same. Made by the same company in the same factory. Don't think because you're spending more you are getting a better product.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 22/05/2020 22:42

We live is Aus.
For a number of years and we’ll before Covid, a great deal of baby formula Was being bought up by individuals and being sold at greater expense to Buyers in China. Perhaps that’s where the Aptamil is going and driving up the price?
During the main part of the crisis here - like loo roll and pasta - they were limiting purchasing items to one per person. People were going into the shops as couples buying one each, taking to their cars and then going back into the store several times for more. Shortage drove up the price.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 22/05/2020 23:28

@CayrolBaaaskin sorry you had a similar experience glad you had a much better experience second time round though. 8 years on I’m still so grateful to the one midwife who came to me and passed Who said we should try formula (albeit in hushed tones like she was offering me heroin).

masterchef98 · 23/05/2020 01:08

I breastfed two kids and never took supplements, they are 6 and 11 now but maybe I should be looking for symptoms of vitamin d deficiency?

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/05/2020 08:13

The godawful stew was definitely in blue tins labelled EEC stewing steak at one point. If I'd recalled this muck earlier I might have voted for Brexit Grin

WoollyMollyMonkey · 23/05/2020 11:43

shewhomustbeobeyed I had a Christmas job at Asda (not last Christmas the one before) and there were Chinese coming in to buy trolley loads of formula. Nothing else, just a full large trolley of formula. So it’s been going on for ages then if they’re still doing it.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2020 12:03

Right now I'll pay extra if only I can order more than 3 at a time!!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2020 12:05

Sorry, presed enter. Shielding so online shopping and fat 5 month old twins

amazedmummy · 23/05/2020 12:23

@SleepingStandingUp that sounds rough! DS gets through more than a tin a week on his own!

Pacmanitee · 23/05/2020 12:26

What brand are you using @SleepingStandingUp? Cow and gate are doing online orders, other brands may be too! Also boots can deliver, but there are usually limits anyway on how you can get, but might help.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2020 13:12

Yup Amazed, 3 8ppg tubs at least. They don't understand they're 5 months old and it's lockdown and they should be bloody drinking that much 😂

Ooh ill have a look Pacmanitee. Last time Boots were limiting numbers too altho I did manage to gently build up a bit of a back supply so we've never run out
We do use C&G so I'll have a look.

They're 6 months in June so can move to Stage 2, can I get Boots points on Stage 2?
Also hoping they will take to food...

FelicisNox · 23/05/2020 13:22

@MrsTerryPratchett I was waiting for the breast is best brigade.

There are multitudes of reasons why women either cannot of for various medical/psychological reasons are unable to breastfeed.

You know this. I know this. Everyone else knows this so why you felt the need to post your entirely needless bottle shaming post is beyond me.

If you were able to breast feed all of your kids, great. Here's the medal (and attention) you desperately crave. 🏅

Kindly leave the women on MN alone, mind your own business and let them make the choices they need to make without taking a sledge hammer to what may already be a very fragile self esteem.

We all have enough problems right now without these types of shitty judgements to deal with.

#BeKind

Pacmanitee · 23/05/2020 13:30

Yes you can, a lot of brands are also on offer in Asda so should work out cheaper for you.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2020 14:25

Yes good point about offers. Will offset what it's gonna cost me in food for them to smear it over themselves and throw out on the floor 😂😂

amazedmummy · 23/05/2020 14:41

Yeah we are basically wearing avocado today. Not sure if much actually went in but he had a great time.

Not sure if you have an Aldi or a Sainsbury's but they both do own brand formula that's pretty reasonable and they do follow on milk too.

roxfox · 23/05/2020 14:47

If all the women who could breastfeed did this wouldn't be a problem. Hopefully mums to be will see the excessive pricing and if they can (which most can) they will choose to breastfeed.

Please don't reply saying fed is best IDGAF

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/05/2020 14:53

I used to curse their name while eating it. Voted remain. Grin

mylittlesandwich · 23/05/2020 15:00

@roxfox please don't push breastfeeding down people's throats because IDGAF.

roxfox · 23/05/2020 15:20

If you choose to make a baby - and successfully do so - your body assumes you've chosen to feed it and most of the time provides you with the ability to do so. It's your hormones shoving breastfeeding down your throat, not me.
