Seadide stupidly busy

I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

@winkywonky ‘ I think a lot of people saying YABU will be from the towns.‘

I have lived in the Peak District for nearly fifty years. We’re blessed, and we know we are, living in this stunning area with only sheep for neighbours. I wouldn’t go to Skegness if you paid me but I do think the OP is bring unkind. To be truthful I wouldn’t go to any ‘popular’ seaside resort. I can’t abide amusement arcades, burger and hot dog stalls, places largely populated by unemployed people, many with drug and alcohol problems- and I’m not being unkind, as a nurse consultant I’ve dealt with some of these people in places like Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe - living in grotty flats and the streets full of charity shops or ‘souvenir’ shops selling plastic tat.

Having said all that, I do understand that for some people these places represent something they think is wonderful. I know people who think Ingolmells is the next place to heaven and in normal times, you don’t hear ‘entitled of Skegness’ grumbling about people spending their money there.

Just over an hour before our weekly applause.

And I think any NHS or key worker jeopardising their own wellbeing whilst seeing so many people dossing on a beach (many on a furlough payout that's more than what some key workers get paid anyway) or generally treating social distancing with contempt, I think they'd be quite entitled before long to tell the public to stick their applause up their arses.

bumptobean · 21/05/2020 18:52

The toilets in Southend are open so not sure why people are saying they are closed everywhere Hmm

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 21/05/2020 18:55

The thing is though, that there is so much outside space around us.

People don't have a problem with people go outside and enjoy the weather. Why would they? The problem arises really only when people turn bit stupid. Where I live we have lots of green. Large areas of grass. Perfect for sitting down or letting out some steam. These remained empty. Yet nearby beach and park are rammed. The difference? The green doesn't have pretty views because it is around or in housing estates.

It's not a need the trip to the beach. It's a want. And people have many wants, but sometimes we can't have everything, can we. Sometimes we have to make do with massive green rather than beach because... Well, there is a pandemic going on at the moment...

Lincolnfield · 21/05/2020 19:00

@MeowTseTung - I’m a theatre sister in a big teaching hospital- I guess that qualifies me as a key worker? I DONT begrudge anyone who is furloughed trying to enjoy some time with their families. A lot of those people were on crap salaries before. This time next year I’ll still have a job and, God willing in the fullness of time I’ll have a pension I can live on. A lot of those poor devils will be on unemployment benefit in the next few months. So please don’t speak for us unless you are one of us.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 19:12

Nice one @Lincolnfield.

lilkitten · 21/05/2020 19:12

It might just be me (I have anxiety) but I'm really happy to stay in my garden. I have some lovely beauty spots around Derbyshire I could go to, but my garden will do.

Blondie1980s · 21/05/2020 19:40

Honestly wherever you are the beach the peaks or the lakes people from other parts of England are flocking there.

I do feel sorry for those that night not have gardens or local beauty spots but the government in England is being far to wishy washy about rules.

There’s should be a drive limit you can still drive to local beauty spots.

The local councils are following government guidelines they are not allowed to open facilities as they cannot assure they will not spread covid.
People need common sense which sadly a lot of public do not follow. If there are no cafes no pubs no toilets open why bother driving all that way to go. ?
Why not go to your local park for overcrowded fun?
As for solutions as there is no actual ease in lockdown just guides that make everyone think there are in England at least.

Wales and Scotland still have stay at home measures so no one should be out sunbathing in public areas.

Others countries had a time scheme like at supermarkets. Old age and vulnerable were allowed out for set times. Then children. Then other adults.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 19:42

The local councils are following government guidelines they are not allowed to open facilities as they cannot assure they will not spread covid

This is obviously untrue as some councils have managed to open them.

YouTheCat · 21/05/2020 19:53

It is true. There is no one enforcing it though.

Violinist64 · 21/05/2020 20:00

Grumpyhoonmain. Do you know your geography? Most of Norfolk is north of Birmingham. Norwich is a similar latitude to Leicester and the North Norfolk coast is about the same as Stoke on Trent. Why would people from south of Birmingham go to Norfolk?

FanfictionFan · 21/05/2020 20:06

As someone who lives in a lovely northwest seaside town, I'm f'd off with folk driving to our beach. You have green spaces near you go visit them. Tourist W@#$kers.

ThistleTits · 21/05/2020 20:08

Gindaddy BJ said people could travel to exercise, not to sit on the beach, have a bbq, park on people's drives or shite in their gardens. I live in a seaside town, we've not been going to the beach because there are no facilities open. We are the people who have to pay for the clean up. Exercise closer to home, the PM is a fkg 🤡 do not take his pathetic advice.

IndecentFeminist · 21/05/2020 20:12

Isle of Wight here. Ferries are trying to out people off (more than their usual prices do anyway 😂) but it is getting busier

skodadoda · 21/05/2020 20:18

Presumably the people flocking to the beaches and seaside towns will be happy to send their children to school on 1st June.

Tubs11 · 21/05/2020 20:23

If people are driving ridiculous distances to visit beaches I can only assume they are also visiting family? I'd love a day at the beach but it's 1.5hr drive for us and feel it's unreasonable and if I'm going to travel that distance it would be to social distance with family. OP, YNBU

watsitallaboot · 21/05/2020 20:30

@Lincolnfield

You should take your own advice and not speak for the poor, unemployed, flat dwelling druggies who who won't have a decent pension in a few years time. Have you been watching fools and horses ... it's not like that for all those "poor" inner city in habitants thank you very much

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 21/05/2020 20:42

When the beaches started filling up in France the police closed them.

Boris won’t bite the bullet. He just gives lip service and does nothing to enforce it. It’s just going to push the infection rate back up. It needs policing properly.

I live near the Peak District. I think that’s been rammed too.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 20:48

Perhaps someone who’s convinced it’s illegal to open public toilets could provide a link as I’ve searched hard and can’t find one. I have found a plethora of councils that have opened up though. Which is odd as local authorities are usually extremely law abiding.

woodhill · 21/05/2020 20:58

It is not necessary to go to the beach, I don't think I would want to visit a public loo at the moment and as for littering, excrement and leaving your dirty nappies on the beach just not on.

Most people have tried hard to stay safe and home so why would others put us back to square one.

YouTheCat · 21/05/2020 21:02

That was the guideline. It may have changed. At no point did I say it was illegal - that was you.

This is interesting though .

starlight13 · 21/05/2020 21:09

This makes me do angry op. We are still not going out and haven't for 8 weeks. These are the thick, fat chavs who I really hope suffer in some way in the future sof that karms can teach thme a lesson. They are probably also the ones complaining about their children going back to school. Because will they be homeschooling them and keeping them at home? Hell no, they'll be partying all summer long. CHILDREN NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL SO THAT THEIR PARENTS GET BACK TO WORK AND STOP CONGREGATING LIKE THIS! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52754039?fbclid=IwAR3cHi5HffUCKJUE6mQg61cdiTEb6brEWTxtBYVFgzWn3XROHNnu5WzuSZ8

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 21:17

So, where’s the guideline? Posting me a link from a Thai newspaper is somewhat pointless. I’m getting absolutely sick of people confidently posting bollocks as absolute fact when they’ve just made it up.

YouTheCat · 21/05/2020 21:28

The link from the Thai medical paper was about research into contamination in faecal matter as a way of the virus spreading in public toilets. I'd say that's pretty relevant.

I'm not going to be using any public toilets unless it is absolutely unavoidable until this virus is well and truly under control. I don't see how councils can guarantee public safety in this. But you crack on. I'd rather be alive.

Flyingunicornsmyass · 21/05/2020 21:28

I'm so torn on this, because we're trying really hard to be sympathetic, people are stuck inside, kids are bored, life is thoroughly depressing; but people have flocked to our seaside town to the extent that we now have to drive elsewhere to walk our dog, becoming part of the problem, huge amounts of traffic, trying to distance around crowds in green spaces. If it wasn't for our dog we'd still be staying inside becsuse we think the government advice is terrible, confusing and not strict enough.

My sister in law is a nurse, who now feels she can't leave her flat outside of work, because her highstreet is so crowded because people are flocking to the sea and shopping whilst they're there.
