To say thank you to all the teachers out there

I have watched in horror as the number of threads about teachers has increased over recent weeks and the overwhelming majority of them have been horrifyingly negative. Yes you can be worried about your child’s education, yes you may have concerns about the impact of them currently not being in school and being taught but can we please realise that the constant horribleness about teachers is totally unnecessary?

Teachers have always had, and continue to have, my upmost respect - I do what others consider is a challenging job but bloody hell, I could never ever teach. I see what friends and family who teach go through and the pressure they are put under constantly with diminishing resources.

This is an extraordinary time. This is not teachers having a jolly. It is a bloody pandemic.

So am AIBU to say that we should remember that teachers are fellow human beings and seeing a constant stream of negativity about them and their profession may have an impact on them? And so often it is from posters who will pull out the “be more kind” line when it suits their agenda.

I am definitely not being unreasonable to say thank you to the teachers out there. How on Earth you put up with all of this I will never know.

Thank you. These last few weeks have made me reconsider whether it's worth being in this profession if I'm honest. Sad
I'm working hard and it makes me really upset to see so much teacher bashing over things that arent in our control. It's not the individual teacher you have concerns with, it's the school/government. Every teacher I know, including myself, is doing exactly what we have been told to do.
It's very upsetting to read a 'teacher vs parents' headline this morning. It's not like that at all. We care about your children and their education, or we wouldnt be in this profession.

justanotherneighinparadise · 20/05/2020 09:24

My sons teacher is amazing. I have no problem with her whatsoever.

lilyboleyn · 20/05/2020 09:27

Thank you.
Please know, kind words shine like a beacon - even when dealing with really unpleasant complaints and attitudes, it’s the kind words from parents that teachers remember forever.

GinDaddyRedux · 20/05/2020 09:30

Very nicely said @countbackfromten and a hear hear from me too.

No question in my mind that teachers are vital to society, they do a fantastic and essential job, and deserve support and respect during a challenging time when many will have their own children to teach as well.

I fear and believe that a lot of the teacher bashing comes down to three simple things, the usual British sneering and envy:

• A misperceptions that they are "doing nothing on full pay" while "I have to still graft": it's the usual race to the bottom mentality. Some people want to see teachers self flagellate just so they can feel better about themselves and their miserable job

• A panic from these posters that finally they have to spend extended time with their "dear" children who actually are trying in patience and who aren't learning well. They then lambast the absence of teachers as a way of crying for help

• Those who look at an example of one private institution's provision and immediately jump to insist every institution should do the same or else they are all lazy

Hmm

So many bitters on here that should all go and teach for a week, they'd be crying their way back to whatever they do.

P.S I'm not a teacher, my wife isn't a teacher, and I'm British if that makes any difference.

Lovely to see a positive thread. Thanks op.

RedPanda2 · 20/05/2020 09:35

Totally agree

Tumbleweed101 · 20/05/2020 09:37

My daughters primary school has been great. Plenty of work to do, zoom meetings for the class, weekly videos from the teachers explaining work or just talking about the school, phone call contact to make sure we’re all doing ok. Has helped her stay connected to school life. She’s in Y6 and can go back in June if all goes to plan. I’m confident that they will do their best to ensure it is kept as safe as possible and I trust that the teachers will do what they can to make it as ‘normal’ as it can be. They do a great job and I don’t imagine the last few months have been easy and neither will the next few months to come.

countbackfromten · 20/05/2020 09:47

I’m a junior doctor and prior to the pandemic we were the lazy greedy ones so I know how it feels to be vilified.

To all the teachers reading this - thank you for doing a job very few of us could ever do.

And really enjoying reading the positive stories from others about teachers. My school days are long behind me but my Biology teacher at secondary school and sixth form definitely had a lasting impact on me and I don’t think I would be where I am now if it hadn’t been for her encouragement and support as well as her excellent teaching.

Thank you. The threads on here have actually made me consider giving it all up. It's such a hard stressful job ordinarily and the vitriolic posts on here (and elsewhere) have really made me question if I can go on teaching thanks again x

QueenofmyPrinces · 20/05/2020 09:50

Big thank you to the teachers as far as I’m concerned Halo Flowers

Elsa8 · 20/05/2020 09:51

Thank you, this is a nice thread! I try to ignore the vitriol on here as I know the majority of my students and their parents don’t feel this way.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 20/05/2020 09:51

Thank you. It has been very upsetting to read the daily hate on this site and it means a lot that not everyone regards us like this.

NameChange84 · 20/05/2020 09:51

Thank you Daffodil.

This will get me through a tough week.

failedasaparent · 20/05/2020 09:52

thank you from me too, you are picking up the pieces where i have failed my children.

CallmeAngelina · 20/05/2020 09:54

Thank you so much.

Thank you teachers. DS teacher is great.
Yesterday one of the mums organised for lots of us to take a photo of our child with a thank you sign, she’s put it together in a little video so our teachers will be seeing that today.

DreamingofBrie · 20/05/2020 10:31

Thank you for this thread Flowers, and thank you to all of my dc's teachers who are doing a brilliant job.

I'm a teacher and my Y11 form have just made me laugh more in 5 minutes than I've done for a long time. Miss seeing them.

CarrieBlue · 20/05/2020 10:33

Thank you OP and thank you to all my dc’s teachers and my colleagues who are working so hard in very difficult conditions at school and at home.

EatDessertFirst · 20/05/2020 10:36

My DCs teachers and all the other staff at their school have been incredible throughout this. I could never do their job and wouldn't even pretend I can homeschool to their standard.
Thank you to all teachers Flowers. You may see a lot of 'teacher bashing' on here but these morons do not represent the majority.

Kljnmw3459 · 20/05/2020 10:48

Yes I think teachers are doing their best to cope in the pandemic. Flowers my dc infant school is concentrating on mental health, even when the schools go back which I really appreciate.

countbackfromten · 20/05/2020 11:23

Must be such a big adjustment going from teaching everyday to this situation. I have been thankful that I still get to go to work during this whole awfulness.

It really is. I miss my students, I miss my tutor group, I'm lucky that most of them email me each week to say they are ok but it's not the same as face to face.

mbosnz · 20/05/2020 11:53

Thank you so much to the teachers.

I know some must be feeling they're not doing enough, that no matter what, whatever they do will not be enough, but all you can do, all anyone can or should ask, is that you're doing your best. And I'm sure the vast majority are.

You're all dealing with your children, your extended family issues, your physical and mental health issues, your relationship woes, the shopping queues, the same pandemic worries and frustrations we all are as well, plus trying to keep our kids educational plates spinning and up in the air.

Thank you so much to my yr9 dd's teachers especially, they are keeping her motivated, and giving her wonderful positive feedback, setting plenty of lessons online, that keeps her engaged and occupied.

I'm so damned tempted to send a couple of cases of wine as thanks to our school that it's not funny! Wine Flowers Cake Thank you.
