Just that really...
yanbu - I wear a mask
YABU - I don’t

FWIW - I have bought a couple and worn for supermarket trips but nothing else. I probably would if having to get on the tube etc

I don’t, but I do click and collect, early slots, for my shopping and live in the middle of nowhere so there’s not really the need as I really don’t see many people at all and certainly not many up close.

Parky04 · 20/05/2020 09:56

No. But if it becomes law I would.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 20/05/2020 09:56

No. I won't be wearing one unless instructed to do so.

SockYarn · 20/05/2020 10:05

Wearing a mask "to go out" has never been recommended, advised or even spoken about.

The advice has been to wear a mask in situations where you find it hard to social distance, should you wish to do so. Not in the street, not in the park, not in your car, not just "out". On a bus or tube train or perhaps in the supermarket.

And anyway, no i'm not. I find it makes my mild asthma a lot worse and I find them incredibly irritating. Cannot bear anything covering my face, ever.

pigoons · 20/05/2020 10:06

I will not be going to any shops that insist I wear a mask.

Frankly Covid is going to be with us a long time and the sooner we accept there is always going to be some degree of risk of getting it the better we can get back to some degree of normality. There are other more sensible precautions we can take e.g. hand washing more and not touching our faces / masks. Clearly if I was unwell I would not be going out..

MrsKoala · 20/05/2020 10:18

I’ve been wearing one purely to give a bit of reassurance to others. I have a cough (which I’ve had for 4 weeks now and the dr says it was probably covid - but who knows - and I am not infectious anymore and the cough can linger for 6 weeks or more).

I think it does give a false sense of security to some. In Lidl yesterday and a woman in a mask and gloves must have touched every chicken while sorting through them looking at the use by dates. Thanks for that Hmm

cologne4711 · 20/05/2020 11:18

Supermarkets yes.

Otherwise no (haven't been on public transport since lockdown started)

Fimofriend · 20/05/2020 11:21

There was an article on www.slate.com where they quoted scientific surveys that said that even with a homemade mask you are preventing 90 % of the micro particles to enter your body

Just had a similar experience in M&S. Woman wearing gloves and a mask. Constantly touching her face, pulling the mask down, up again, adjusting it to cover her mouth but not her nose, sliding the cardboard sleeves about 25 ready meals before deciding which one of the identical cartons she wanted to buy.

Then hissing NOT TOO CLOSE at a staff member she wanted to ask where the ginger beer was.

Totally pointless, but she was clearly a believer in the "masks will protect you from all ills" school of thinking.

Where I am in Asia masks are compulsory out side your house except if you are cycling or running. I do a daily walk around a large pond in a park, not many people are there but everyone has a mask. I fiddle with mine, it is hooped over my ears and not over my face unless I see someone then I put it on. It gets washed daily. If I am at the supermarket I wear it all the time and don't touch it. It can get hot and I have mild asthma but I still wear it.

Unless you are wearing a N95 or similar the mask you have is to protect other people from your germs (Covid or otherwise) it is common in Asia and I think it is a lovely, thoughtful gesture. With the Covid outbreak though, everyone wearing a mask WILL stop transmission.

NameChangedToProtect1 · 21/05/2020 07:34

Wearing masks is not a lovely thoughtful gesture it is a sign that we are struggling to respond to this virus. Hopefully this one will burn its self out and we will start addressing the route causes of species virus jumps/mutates. The science is still immature at the moment and has a long way to go but masks should only be a temporary feature let's not not normalise them.

oohnicevase · 21/05/2020 07:40

I haven't got one ..

Tinabn · 21/05/2020 09:33

I use click and collect and wear a woodworking mask and disposable gloves, I keep a bag in the boot of my car and take off the mask, then the gloves and put them in the bag before using hand gel and closing the boot, the mask and gloves stay there for the week and I can use them again. I forgot to take new ones in the car when I took my DM for a routine blood test at a drive in centre only to find the nurse didn’t wear a mask and opened the car door....not happy and am now making masks for the whole family.

HissyFitz2020 · 21/05/2020 10:46

Have ordered ordinary cloth ones and haven't received them yet. I know I'll never be able to make them properly at home (including the no-sew ones) in such a way that they stay on. Really am only buying them to wear for the look of it in supermarkets, in case people start making comments.

Tried wrapping a scarf round my face and it was hopeless; spent the whole time trying to adjust it (which we all know is worse than nothing) so gave up in five minutes.

HissyFitz2020 · 21/05/2020 10:50

Just to add - I'm incredibly careful about everything else; social distancing, frequent all-surface handwashing, thoroughly cleaning surfaces in the office every morning before starting work. It's just masks.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/05/2020 10:51

Only when I go into shops, which is very rare at the moment. Used mine for the 1st time yesterday and it was annoying, especially wearing glasses.

zingally · 21/05/2020 10:54

I haven't been, but was looking into buying a few reusable cloth ones on Ebay only yesterday.

When I do the weekly food shop, it's about 70:30 people not wearing masks or not wearing masks. But that's in a large, reasonably airy supermarket.

I anticipate they might become more of a requirement when the smaller shops start to reopen.

My sister is going to the opticians tomorrow, to get her glasses altered, and was told when booking the appointment that she'd need a mask on for it.

CharDeeMacDennis · 21/05/2020 11:07

I've bought some, not used them yet. More in anticipation of lockdown being eased and being able to go on public transport again.

Plus my DC get the bus to school, so might be needed when they go back.

They are quite nice actually, soft and comfortable and cover everything from top of nose to under chin.

HaddawayAndShite · 21/05/2020 11:17

Not when walking the dog and I’m open spaces. I’ve not been inside a shop yet but I probably would, but I need to get a mask clip as my ears don’t seem to hold the mad on very well, it kept pinging off one ear when I wore it in the house. Ears are too small and it kept fogging up my glasses

ostinato · 21/05/2020 12:02

I’m not...I have asthma and can’t deal with anything that covers my nose and mouth. I had to come to London (medical reason) and despite the TFL rhetoric fewer than a quarter of passengers were wearing them an NO staff! A few staff members had them on but pulled under their chins but for most there were none in sight.

Alexis21 · 21/05/2020 12:35

Yes when in the supermarket and gloves . It's common practice where I live and if I was in the uk I would do so.

Pepperwand · 21/05/2020 12:42

We have a couple in case it becomes mandatory to wear them in public but so far I haven't worn one when out. I haven't been anywhere where social distancing isn't possible and to be honest I think they give a false sense of security. I've seen lots of people wearing them and then walking right up to others and ignoring the 2m rule, or wearing them over their mouth but not their nose. Personally if I've been in the supermarket I use antibacterial gel the minute I get out of there and wash my hands thoroughly every time I come home.
