Just that really...
yanbu - I wear a mask
YABU - I don’t

FWIW - I have bought a couple and worn for supermarket trips but nothing else. I probably would if having to get on the tube etc

No I've never worn one but I have watched tens of people in the queues at various shops who have riddled with theirs, put it on/taken it off wrong, worn it completely wrong or pulled it down to speak on the phone/smoke and even to cough!!

TheHighestSardine · 19/05/2020 22:47

As many above, for shopping but not exercising. Goes straight into the wash and then wash hands when I get home.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 19/05/2020 22:48

@arcasia - are they easy to buy there? Or are people making their own?

I have some washable cloth ones but I haven't worn them yet as nobody wears them in my town so it'd be really awkward. There's no cases in my town yet though. I thought about wearing it when I had to go to the GP yesterday but it was very quiet there, no one else there, so I didn't. I made OH and his friend wear them when OH had to pick up his friend from the train station though.

ilovebluecheese · 19/05/2020 22:50

On my daily exercise I haven't been.
I haven't been been wearing them to do food shop but I have been wearing gloves. Although hand washing - good hand washing is just as effective.

Have they actually released what type of face mask, what grade you should be wearing????

Ragwort · 19/05/2020 22:51

No, personally I don’t feel it offers much protection ... I am happy to take my chances.

Sindragosan · 19/05/2020 22:53

Yes when I'm shopping as everyone else seems to be, not anywhere else.

FOJN · 19/05/2020 22:54

I used this pattern, it took a few attempts to get a perfect fit for me. They are hot to wear but comfortable enough not to need to fiddle with it once it's on. I found it increased my awareness of face touching and social distancing because it's so warm you can't forget about it; it's a constant reminder about the reason you're wearing one.

Acrasia · 19/05/2020 22:54

There are a mix of people wearing homemade ones and disposable ones, so they must be fairly obtainable. I don’t know how easy though because I have made my own. It was a nice distraction of a project. I do see a lot of adverts for pretty cloth masks on instagram.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 19/05/2020 22:55

I feel very inadequate- I don’t even own a sewing needle and thread these day’s!

No

Only go to supermarkets and local shops
I sanitize with my own bottle plus use the santisers provided and only touch trolley handles with paper towel etc

Wash hands as soon as I get in

ilovebluecheese · 19/05/2020 22:55

How do the homemade ones really work when they don't have a filter.... is there much point wearing them???

FraughtwithGin · 19/05/2020 22:57

Where I live, not UK, masks must be worn in shops and on public transport.
So when I am in a shop I wear the mask, in my car I don't.
However, I wonder why the shop assistants are not wearing masks, but what do I know?

Acrasia · 19/05/2020 22:58

You can use kitchen towel as a filter, just remember to make a pocket for it.

ilovebluecheese · 19/05/2020 22:58

Yeh I have seen shop assistants not wearing them which does make you wonder!?!?

hammeringinmyhead · 19/05/2020 22:59

Yes, I wear one to the supermarket but not when out walking.

Peakypolly · 19/05/2020 22:59

As I entered M&S today the staff member wiping the trolley handles was saying to those wearing masks “Thanks for wearing a mask, we appreciate it” which I thought was a good subtle way of pointing out we are ideally wearing them inside stores.

Masks are to protect others from you Ragwort, not to offer you protection.

I watched a woman at the supermarket this week and she sat in the car and took her mask off by pinching the front of it and then folded it up, if there was any virus on it she immediately spray it over her hands. I think they give a false sense of security and are pointless if not used correctly Maybe she immediately used hand gel or similar?

PestymcPestFace · 19/05/2020 23:03

I wear a fabric mask to the shops and to work. I get through a few a day, luckily they are washable.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/05/2020 23:03

I wear one in the supermarket or gp, I don't on my walk though I bring tissues. I also bring wipes ti the supermarket home made with some bleach for the trolley handle, lift buttons etc. I give the lift buttons a little wash. Grin
@Blankiefan Good way of thinking, I think it would put many staff at ease if customers wore a mask.

theoldtrout01876 · 19/05/2020 23:05

We have to wear em. I wear one all day at work too. My town just says you have to wear them in the stores. The town I work in say you have to wear one outside. My work says wear them all the time, even if Im not in the lab but in my high walled cubicle. We are not allowed in the building without one.

Sparklesocks · 19/05/2020 23:05

I’ve ordered some online (both types - disposable and washable) but neither have come yet so I’m not, but plan to when they (finally) arrive

Blankiefan · 19/05/2020 23:05

Unless they are medical grade (which most people can't get and morally probably shouldn't as they should be left for the NHS), wearing then mostly protects others. They're not great to wear - hot and uncomfortable for the hour you might be in Tesco. I wouldn't want to wear them for an 8 hour shift and given that (in this environment), the shop staff are most at risk given their exposure, I understand why shop start aren't wearing them. But i think that if it's possible, we should.

I've made some from a few different patterns online - I'm a very basic sewer. If you make ones with a filter pocket and use a filter (even kitchen roll), it does give the wearer a little protection but not enough to be safe.

People do need to understand how to wear them, not fiddle with them and how to remove them safely. Lots of info online about this.

lljkk · 19/05/2020 23:07

No. I don't go anywhere where I can't keep 2m apart from other people. I don't care if I get the virus, anyway.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/05/2020 23:08

However, I wonder why the shop assistants are not wearing masks, but what do I know? Until the government states they are essential employers will get away with supplying them.
DP wears one when dealing one to one with a customer in electrical retail.

Sadie789 · 19/05/2020 23:08

No.

And unless it is one of the clear and specific instructions from the government I won’t be any time soon.

The reason is simply that I don’t want to wear one.
