To make a pie out of the Magpie

That’s flying around my garden screeching?

At least I think it’s a magpie. Big, blue and black. Could be tasty with the right seasoning.

DH acts like they’re endangered and spends 8 hours a day yelling at the cat or yelling at me to get the cat

I we married to the same bloke? In our case it's mallard ducks (and ducklings) in the front garden, DH spends half his life running out the front door chasing the cat, and when the babies were tiny any passing seagulls. The ducks are a thousand times smarter than the cat though.

Well, it’s too hot to run my oven but the magpies are at it again today. I want the sweetness of soft bird song, not the screech of a feathered harridan flying around the neighbourhood. It’s interesting that they dive bomb us! They also signal to their mates when a cat is present. They are clever indeed.

Birds are definitely getting bolder in my garden. I had a coaltit or bluetit that all but joined me through the open conservatory door yesterday. I think they're loving the absence of cars and traffic noise. Magpies and hulking great ocean-going gulls are our thugs!

Our cat killed a pigeon and brought it into the house.

DH used it to make a pigeon pie.

Aw I am quite happy with the noise that the blackbirds, sparrows etc. make. But YANBU at all about magpies. Horrible noise and horrible birds generally.

pigsDOfly · 20/05/2020 17:25

I love the song of a blackbird in the early evening. Nothing as beautiful.

DGRossetti · 20/05/2020 17:40

Apparently there's not much meat on a magpie, once you'd removed the feathers.

I'm a bit of a corvid fan (dunno why) so am not massively on board with the idea of eating one.

Also, from many sources, they are very intelligent and social. Be careful you don't set yourself up for a revenge attack from the parliament.

topcat2014 · 20/05/2020 17:42

Watched magpie outside my office eating a dead squirrel today so it's a no from me

LEELULUMPKIN · 20/05/2020 17:47

I've got a very loved up couple in the Silver Birch tree high above my bedroom window. I got a peek at the fledgling yesterday as they were taking turns in feeding it, so cute!

I love all birds

DGRossetti · 20/05/2020 17:52

One for the corvid clan Smile

LangClegsInSpace · 20/05/2020 17:58

We had a magpie down our chimney today.

LangClegsInSpace · 20/05/2020 17:59

I saw a magpie once having breakfast out of a dog poo bin so I wouldn't eat one.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 20/05/2020 18:05

Leave the magpie alone. I may be on my own here, but they're my favourite bird. To be fair, that probably says more about me than it should!

MitziK · 20/05/2020 18:15

The Corvid term for 'Cat' (at least in the Crow Dialect) is 'Rak-rak'. If you've got a bunch of the buggers on the grass, there are always one or two perched somewhere higher to observe the perimeter - if a local moggy happens to wander into sight of the guards, they yell 'Rak-rak! Rak-rak!' and the main group respond according to whether it's the unfriendly neighbourhood entire tom killing machine or the generally knackered geriatric ginger coming out for a brief nap in the sun.

HeyLala · 20/05/2020 18:38

Does anyone want a squirrel for the pie?

One in my garden, lay sunbathing yesterday afternoon and looked really peaceful. I accidentally woke him up and he stood up, stared at me, tail going crazy making an horrendous noise. Very aggressive.

My neighbour cane out to see what the noise was. Never seen an angry squirrel before and even when I scared it off, it still screeched from inside the tree.

He's yours if I can catch it.... Smile

Toilenstripes · 20/05/2020 18:39

This knackered geriatric ginger manages to sleep through all the comings and goings.

HeyLala I give squirrels a wide berth, but I’m amused that you were given the old stink eye for waking one up. 😆

They eat crap and have a lot of worms. You can eat them but rather like fish you need to remove the worms after cooking.

bookmum08 · 20/05/2020 18:44

I live in one of the parts of London that has the parakeets. My upstairs neighbour has got bird feeders hanging off her windows and then parakeet swoop past my window up to feed. They are massive and very loud but they are gorgeous.

KateF · 20/05/2020 18:57

I've got rather fond of the pair nesting in next door's big pine tree that overhangs my garden. I call them the Maggenpies like Gerald Durrell's in 'My Family and Other Animals'. Sadly I've found two dead magpie chicks in the garden this week. I hope they've got others.

ViciousJackdaw · 20/05/2020 19:26

Want me to go and peck the bastard to death OP?

Toilenstripes · 20/05/2020 19:32

Vicious 😂 after hearing about the worms and eating crap....maybe just live and let live. They’re suspiciously quiet this evening. 😬

Devlesko · 20/05/2020 19:34

I hope you have been saluting every time you see a single one.
I think you'd need to breed one for eating, rather than one thats been eating crap. Grin
It could be a new delicacy, like hedgehog.
