I keep getting a banner on the site saying Mumsnet needs my help. Has anyone signed up for Premium - is it worth it?

Yes I have. I don’t notice any difference other than the lack of an ad banner. I don’t care about having any special features, I just want MN to stay online.

I did sign up for monthly payments because I’ve been here ten years and it’s been a place I’ve loved to frequent. I don’t actually care about edit buttons or adverts or premium features, I theoretically enjoy what I get for the monthly money...

Except I’ve been furloughed and every penny counts, and I can’t warrant those payments. I gave one but then cancelled.

@SunflowerSeedsForever no; it's vastly bigger now. It used to be hugely cliquey but equally there was a lot less drama and fewer people who need help to determine whether their milk has gone off. I've got good at knowing which threads/topics to hide Grin

Nope. MN makes money from the content provided by members and doesn't seem to have plowed any profits back into updating the platform. The limited features are clunky. I think Justine mentioned in a recent post that they haven't been updating because they're creating a whole new platform to be released this summer - looking forward to seeing it.

I also have concerns about the security of sharing financial information given previous reported breaches.

Re content, it now frequently seems that many threads are pages and pages of posts of the exact same comment - no longer entertaining or helpful, just time consuming. Why post if multiple other people have said the exact same thing? And sometimes really nasty just for the sake of nastiness. I come here less and less these days.

I currently pay about 10 pounds annually for a niche website membership that provides specific members only threads in addition to the public threads. That subscription truly "keeps the lights on" as there are no ads at all.

I’ve been using mumsnet less and less over the last few months - it is so aggressive all the time now that I can’t be bothered with it. AIBU is just an excuse to pile in on the OP and as PP said, posters posting the same thing over and over. I end up jumping to the OP posts and probably missing some good advice due to mindless repeats of the same thing.

I use a smaller board specific to my DS’s uni which has been helpful and supportive, but I wouldn’t pay to use it. If I can’t access mumsnet because I won’t pay then there are plenty of other chat forums out there that are free which have better features.

Yes. I don't really care about getting fewer adverts, for me it's more about paying a subscription for a service I enjoy. I get much more enjoyment from Mumsnet than several other things I pay a subscription for.

I don't notice the ads so dont see the point in paying for less ads.

I use quite a few sites and most of them have better features than Mumsnet. An edit button for one.
I also don't see why I should pay to post when the staff don't seem to do much for their £300k a month wages.

beautifulmonument · 20/05/2020 08:20

I haven't. I think it's too expensive.
£2-3/month it would be more reasonable.

I've signed up for the monthly subscription. I have been using MN for 10 years. I don't post much, but I've actually learned such a lot over the years - I appreciate that.

The owner of this site gets a 25k a month wage.
Wow, almost a professional footballer's salary!

Have people that paid got the edit function?

No. But then I don't want there to be an edit function!

I signed up. The cost is neglible to me and I'm happy to pay a bit for something I use a lot. I do the same for the Guardian subscription. DH does for Wikipedia.

No, I'm on furlough with a chance of losing my job so I'm not forking out for luxuries at the moment. Ads don't bother me anyway.

DappledThings That’s fine that you aren’t bothered but I think it’s wrong that they were saying that posters would get that feature if they subscribed and then don’t provide it.

No other company would get away with that.

ilovesooty · 20/05/2020 10:09

I seem to remember that they said the edit feature would be available in due course.

I don't think they did say that. It was only ever floated as a possible development as far as I recall.

So have I got this straight, people have paid up and STILL arent getting anything extra for their money? Call me cynical, but that sounds like a scam to me.

DappledThings · 20/05/2020 13:19

Well there are definitely fewer ads. I don't get the annoying ones in the middle of threads anymore. And mostly no banner ads.

But I didnt sign up to get a benefit so I'm not bothered. I don't think anything was promised to those who signed up other than fewer ads.

Ditto to several PPs. I signed up to support MN as it is my go to when I have queries- not just child related but also house/legal etc.. I actually stopped posting on MN when they had a data breach. I had to sign up for a new account in order to pay the subscription but MN has been a great help to me since I first had children.

They aren't worthy of support. The acceptance of the attacks on teachers is vile.

Report
Nicknacky · 20/05/2020 16:04

LemonPudding And why exactly should MN censor people’s opinion? If there is personal attacks then they should rightly be deleted but no way should whole topics be removed. Almost all the threads (and there have been many) about my occupation are negative but I don’t expect Mumsnet to remove them. They are people’s opinions and experiences.

Report
AmNot · 20/05/2020 16:14

I don't think MN should censor opinion but I think they should be able to prevent the posting of multiple threads on the same topic.
