To think you don’t burn many calories doing PE with Joe!

littleblackdress04 · 19/05/2020 14:08

I’ve done PE with Joe (with my kids) 3-4 times a week since the start so 9 weeks in. But I really haven’t noticed much change to my body shape at all and after 9 weeks I would expect to be more toned? I am stronger and can do a 1 minute plank but that’s about it.

Aibu to be a bit disappointed?!

I have been doing it every day for the eleventy billion days of lockdown. I look very different. I’ve lost loads and my shape has changed. I’m wearing a dress size or two smaller. I guess we all are different.

  1. It's for kids, it's probably not tough enough for an adult
  1. 20mins of moderate exercise 3-4 times a week with little other changes to your diet and other activity levels won't do much for you
Beautiful3 · 19/05/2020 16:01

I did his work outs (instead of davina McCall dvd) for 6 weeks and I'd put weight on! I went back to my dvd workout, I sweated more and felt better for it. I dont think the Joe Wicks workouts help to lose weight, they are just a bit of fun to get the kids to move about!

Thighmageddon · 19/05/2020 16:07

The only routine that ever had a fast and good effect on me is Jillian Michaels 30 day shred.

It can be quite brutal but it works.

inwood · 19/05/2020 16:10

It's only about ten minutes of actual exercise.

I do HIIT workouts but the exercise is more and the rest periods less, eg 60 on 10 off or 50 on 10 off without all the chatting in the middle. It's great for kids and I like his adult workouts but no I wouldn't expect to lose weights.

You could add in some weights and do eg weighted squats and lunges to get more resistance in.

MissFitton · 20/05/2020 09:38

Do we think Joe or Rosie are MNers? A mention this morning about it being a work out for kids (I may have misheard as my dcs were squabbling talking.

If you are, thanks - PE with Joe is giving me a great start to my day and I appreciate you doing it. SmileStar

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/05/2020 09:46

Yes, I do think they are on MN. There was a thread (which got a bit nasty) about Rosie standing in and who was minding the kids. Next day, they have their kids in the room with them.

If you are reading this Joe. Thank you, We do your workout everyday and I’m much fitter and my shape has definitely changed and I’ve gone down a dress size.

MissFitton · 20/05/2020 09:57

Ah, I didn't realise there had been previous threads.

It gets my teen and grumpy pre-teen out of bed every morning and we have good fun doing it. I'll miss it when we're all back to normal.

GinDaddyRedux · 20/05/2020 10:00

OP the big question is whether you are eating any differently. Real fitness change is made in the kitchen

Witchofzog · 20/05/2020 10:01

I like the workouts and am definitely more toned as a result. His adult hiit sessions are shorter video time but more work out time so worth bearing in mind too.

If they are on here though, I would like to say to Joe to stop being so bossy with Rosie! There was a weekend workout in the garden where Indie, his daughter, was out too but she got a little louder so he told Rosie to take her in, then he told her to close the door, then he told her to go upstairs Shock And it didn't sit right with me . Probably because my dp is like this and it feels awful - a bit like being told off like a child. And also it's the weekend - kids are out in their gardens at the weekend and Indie is adorable so people love to see and hear her.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 20/05/2020 10:01

Exercise really does naff all for weight loss unless you're also adjusting your diet

It is brilliant for overall health, physical as well as mental, of course

But most people hugely overestimate the amount of calories they burn in an average workout session

Michaelbaubles · 20/05/2020 10:04

I tend to go for a run beforehand and I use hand weights while doing squats for example (Shred style!). I also jog on the spot in the rest periods. I find it’s good for getting me to do stuff I hate like burpees and push ups, that I’d never do left to my own devices. And it’s a good start to the day if you do nothing else. But you need to add more to make it a “good” workout for an adult. Still worth doing though!

SwedishK · 20/05/2020 10:37

If you want to burn calories you’re better off going for a 30 minute jog or power walk. His exercise is aimed at kids.

StealthNinjaMum · 20/05/2020 10:39

Is this a stealth boast? I’m quite fit, go to gym, do Pilates yet feel knackered and achy after one session.

tenterden · 20/05/2020 10:42

I think they are doing a great job. The exercise may well stop some children from becoming overweight or losing their basic fitness level.

It also releases dopamine which should lift mood - really important for many adults and children.

I have been doing 20/30 minutes of Mr Motivator every day and can really feel it!! Grin But to be honest I was pitifully unfit before.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/05/2020 11:42

My DH is a regular gym user in normal times, he is super fit and runs loads. He finds PE with joe really hard and a good workout. I guess it depends how much you put into it. I know it’s caused me to lose weight and change shape because it’s the only change I’ve made.

This times a hundred

Also, it inspired our household (no kids) to move on to some Hiit stuff on youtube, so another thanks from here to Joe and Rosie

HeffalumpsCantDance · 20/05/2020 12:55

One of the good things about Joe’s stuff in primary school is that he pitches it as accessible to all children, not just the sporty ones who enjoy exercise. It raises the heart rate, gets them moving and they find it fun.
His activities are not pitched at women missing their gym sessions, or even adults, but there are a hundred more challenging workouts available online.

sociallydistained · 20/05/2020 12:57

Burns less than 150 calories. I did it for 2 weeks with the kids and wore my heart rate monitor and I barley got into the green zone and the most I burned was 150 ish mostly barely getting my heart rate up.... I was visibly sweating too but it just isn't high enough intensity. Gets the kids moving though doesn't it!

Can burn 300 calories in the same time doing something really intensive such Les Mills Grit.

imsooverthisdrama · 20/05/2020 13:05

Realistically a 30 minute workout 3-4 times per week with no changes to your diet or lifestyle will make very little difference to your body shape.
True ,
Since lockdown I've done 5-6 workouts not joe wicks anymore . They are 1 hour workout high intensity with my online membership class.
Even I don't feel my body has changed that much , saying that I don't weigh myself and I've lived in my gym wear so not my work clothes .!
The joe wicks is a good start but maybe add some jumping jacks , burpees etc cardio exercises and a bit of a walk/run on your daily exercise.

LillianGish · 20/05/2020 14:10

It depends how much effort you put into it surely and what your exercise level was to start with? I've been doing it every day (including weekends) and as a lapsed gym goer I think its great. I love the fact that it only takes 30 minutes at the start of the day and you can do it in your living room with no equipment. There's no excuse not to do it! I think it does what it says on the tin - it makes you feel energised and sets you up for the day. If you are already superfit then it's not going to be enough, but I think it's target audience is couch potatoes (like me!) I like the fact that you never know what you'll be doing so you can't get bored, some days are better than others - I always think whatever other exercise I manage during the day (sometimes none at all ) at least I've done Joe Wicks. And I'm definitely fitter now than when I started.

Chachang · 20/05/2020 14:12

Isn't it meant for children though, it's not really designed as a programme to get adults into shape Confused. Although he has plenty of videos on YouTube of workouts aimed at adults.

hanahsaunt · 20/05/2020 14:13

I can do more of everything and for longer now than I could at the start and that's great as far as I am concerned. It's exercise I wasn't doing before and we are loving it.

ShipshapeShore · 20/05/2020 14:24

My DC gave up weeks ago but I still do it - I love it! It makes me laugh and gives me motivation for the day so it's worth it for me no matter how many calories I burn. Joe's become my lockdown hero Grin

CottonSock · 20/05/2020 14:29

I've switched to the adult versions now, but the PE really motivate me to get started. At beginning PE destroyed me. Now I can do a proper workout and am running. Thank you Joe.
Now I only do PE if kids want to do it, usually Friday for dress up.
