Ebayer now doesn't want to pay for item.

I've been selling on ebay for few years now and not had a situation like this. Just want advice as unsure if I should cancel the order or set up an unpaid request.

I put a listing up of a bundle that went for around 50 pounds. The bidder who won it won the last second of the auction and a day later still hadn't paid. So I sent them a payment reminder so I could post it to them quickly. Day later they ask for cheaper postage for a small parcel when the bundle is huge and already this was so they could try save a pound off the price so seemed petty.
I said I thought it seemed fair and that I was going to try to resolve this now through ebay as I'm uncomfortable with how long its been now without payment. Another day had gone and they now confessed saying they checked their bank and didn't want to now pay that much and wanted just one thing out of the bundle and asked me to sell them just that and relist the rest at my time and expense.

I said you shouldn't bid on a item if you don't intend on paying and said they should of cancelled or retract bid. They say I have to cancel and for them to accept that.

Should I cancel it or open up a unpaid item?
I know not exactly world issues right now but feel messed about and unsure what is best way to solve it.

Yeah they said I checked my bank and decided I didn't want to pay that much anymore. Just not had anything like this happen and don't want to mess up my good feedback. If I just relist it is that better than cancelling it?

Phone ebay for advice, I've always found them to be really helpful when I've had a buyer messing me about.

WhenItIsOver · 19/05/2020 09:08

Actually you can report them for asking for something that wasn't in the terms or listing. They have asked you to reduce the postage, and then asked you to just sell them one item. That is not part of the terms of your listing and against the rules.

You are within your rights to open a dispute but as you say, they might pay just to be awkward, so report them to Ebay for that instead.

nobodyschilds · 19/05/2020 09:09

If they leave bad feedback, ebay live chat were really helpful for me! A buyer wanted to return a no returns item (with me paying etc) and when I explained I listed it as no returns they left bad feedback but the live chat team were lovely and removed the feedback immediately after checking the listing Smile

Helpusout · 19/05/2020 09:13

Yeah I think I need to speak to someone from ebay I just using the app so when I been trying to resolve stuff just coming up with articles and having to try piece together what best action to take.

GabsAlot · 19/05/2020 09:15

yes they may have used an app but u still put your limit in it so its not a mistake

open a dispute and get your fee back they wont have to buy it but you wont lose out either

TheTrollFairy · 19/05/2020 09:21

I would just close the listing purely because if they pay because you set up a dispute then they’ll take the item out and then open a dispute to get their money back saying not all items are there and then they’ll also get a refund on the return postage costs. eBay are notorious for siding with the buyer (DP sold a faulty Xbox, listed the exact fault and said it was for spares and repairs only as this particular fault can’t be fixed. Buyer started a dispute saying Xbox had the fault listed and was unfixable and ebay sided with the buyer and DP had to pay for the item to be returned)

stairgates · 19/05/2020 09:28

Is there an option to cancel the sale under 'Buyer has changed their mind'. I have a basic sellers account and it offers this. It refunds my fees automatically I think?

stairgates · 19/05/2020 09:29

If they leave you ned feedback then just call in to ebay and they will most probably remove it as they will see what has happened.

Helpusout · 19/05/2020 09:32

I haven't cancelled before so not sure but think they have to accept the cancellation? So don't know if that's another hurdle I'll have to get over with someone who's unreasonable and takes long time to reply.

These options that come up.

Just relist it. eBay can’t force them to pay. You can open a dispute but the most that’ll happen is they’ll get an unpaid item strike, which means nothing really

Elouera · 19/05/2020 09:41

@FamilyOfAliens- not everyone knows there is an ebay forum, so incase the OP didn't know, its another place she can get help, in addition to asking on here!

Is that ok with you??? What a weird and rude comment! I didn't say she couldn't ask on here, just trying to help them out Hmm

Helpusout · 19/05/2020 09:51

I've relisted now sucks they can just mess you around like that but not end of the world just really annoying.

Lairymary · 19/05/2020 09:54

Close it, offer to second highest bidder or relist and block buyer. I wouldn't bother opening a dispute as if on the off chance they did pay up and you send it, they seem the sort of buyer that would cause further problems. They have already shown their true colours by trying to knock down the postage, they are likely to raise a "this isn't what I ordered claim/ not in the condition as in the description to make you give them a partial refund etc". Been there. Move on and don't waste any more time on this CF.

Lairymary · 19/05/2020 10:00

I'm not 100% sure but I think you actually need to cancel the transaction with her as well as relisting it, as she will still have the option of paying for it, plus she has probably had a notification to say it's been relisted.

Namechange2020onceagain · 19/05/2020 10:07

Just wait 7 days from the time this listing ended, then an option to cancel and relist will appear. They won't be able to leave bad feedback and you will not be charged the final value fee. Cancel the one that you relisted and wait.

spongedog · 19/05/2020 10:14

Perhaps too late now but opening the unpaid dispute gets you fees back. On £50 plus postage - you might have paid over £5 for FINAL VALUE fees. I wont incur those costs if I am being messed around. I also do really like the idea of an unpaid strike going against buyers who mess around.

Hamm87 · 19/05/2020 10:34

You need to open a dispute as you will have been charged you could have also second chance offered it

ViciousJackdaw · 19/05/2020 10:41

Yes, open a non-paying bidder case. You'll get your fees back and they will get a strike. For all you know, they could be trying stuff like this all the time.

biglouis · 19/05/2020 10:41

I sell on Ebay and am a top rated seller. Every often you get an akward customer.

First Ive set up the automatic proceedure with Ebay which handles reminders and non payment. This means you dont have to get personally involved.

When cancelling a sale you need to be careful not to collect a "defect" which is where Ebay thinks its your fault because you couldnt complete the sale. You then get a black mark which can count against your seller status.

If the buyer requests you to cancel a sale then you will not get a defect. So if you choose to cancel for the items the buyer does NOT want be sure to mark each one as having been "cancelled at buyer request". That gets you off the hook. Then just refund and rebill for what the buyer actually does want.

Remember that in the case of non payment if the buyer leaves a negative Ebay will automatically remove it. They can only leave negs for items that buyer has paid for. A negative is not the worst thing in the world and most buyers ignore them. I buy extensively and ignore the odd neg a seller has.

Finally dont forget to put the buyer on your BBL so they cannot mess you about again.

DarkDarkNight · 19/05/2020 10:43

Does ebay still have the second chance offer? If so you could offer it to the second in line to save delisting.

Sounds like they had an automatic bid and weren’t expecting it to go so high.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 19/05/2020 10:49

I stopped selling on ebay since I only sold a few of my things, some children's games etc and competition wins (brand new items) and I had several say they didn't arrive - learnt to use tracking but then buyers don't want to pay for it... at least you know that they cannot 'pretend' it doesn't arrive and get a refund. Another time an item was tracked and delivered to neighbour and signature and still person said didn't get it. I google map looked and very rough area - and looking at history of purchases had made similar purchases before - I think some people chance it with home sellers.

I believe in honesty and unfortunately there are some on ebay who will take advantage.

People bidding and then not paying is annoying but at least you still have the item to resell. As others as said block them and move on. Not worth the hassle to be honest.

I started selling locally (although not at present) on a selling site on facebook so at least you get the money and hand over the item. No fees either. Perhaps try that when things go back to normal

Lovemusic33 · 19/05/2020 10:56

Have had this happen a few times, I got fed up with people not paying so if they haven’t paid within 3 days it gets resisted. Not much you can do other than realist and report them as not paying.

buckleten · 19/05/2020 11:07

I would block the buyer so they never buy from you again. I think you can offer it to the underbidder as a second chance offer, which if they buy it means you would get nearly the full amount? But they are not obliged to buy it, it is just worth a shot as it may mean you don't need to relist!
