To think life will be pretty much normal by early 2021?

I hope we are! A colleague said today (he has no extra knowledge or info) that he can't see us being back in the office before 2021.

Do you think Covid will be mostly behind us by then or we will still be living with restrictions?

crikeycrumbsblimey · 18/05/2020 20:59

Nope, we are going to have to live a different way for a while.

That’s not pessimism it’s realism. Life will be different and people will get used to it. Like we do with everything we adapt to it. You can’t expect after a major international event like this everything will suddenly click back into place like before, it just isn’t going to happen.

Even something like clothes shopping you only have to look at the significant impact on supply chains across the world to know it can’t be the same

Areyouactuallyseriousrightnow · 18/05/2020 21:00

Life will be a new normal by early 2021 I reckon, not the same as pre Covid19 but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in many respects.
I think this will have forced the work from home revolution- lockdown proved to businesses that It’s possible, with substantial savings if offices are smaller as people are in less frequently.
I imagine most communal ‘leisure/lifestyle’ facilities will be open, cafes bars restaurants, holiday travel, gyms etc but adapted with enhanced hygiene measures. Might mean things are more expensive but we’ll appreciate being able to do it at all.
Transport will be tricky, even with many more working from home, and cycling/walking, there will still be significant demand at peak times, masks will be standard I guess?
Schools I think will be reasonably back to normal too although more cautious approach to drop offs and pick ups etc.
And we hopefully will be capitalising on the green gains from all these changes, and forging a much more sustainable way of being.

Basically it will be ok, just different.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 18/05/2020 21:00

He didnt mean live with social distancing, he meant live with the virus

If there is no vaccine we will all need to take our chances with covid.

MintyCedric · 18/05/2020 21:05

I'm not banking on things being 'normal' as we knew it until 2022 tbh, by which time there will hopefully be a vaccine or better treatments.

I think things will change and improve gradually over that time though, it won't always be this difficult.

And it is crap, but when you think people lived through 6 years of WW2...humans do manage and and move on.

This too shall pass.

MargotB7 · 18/05/2020 21:17

I didn't know what dementors were so I googled it.

I'm not bothered about pubs, restaurants, cinemas etc but it's hard not seeing our Grandchild and other children. Luckily my youngest is a young teenager and not bothered about seeing his friends as he talks to them online etc. I feel sorry for the older teenagers. I feel sorry for everyone suffering financially (we are starting to be affected) and also mental health and loss of lives.

I don't know what to think.

GinghamStyle · 18/05/2020 21:20

My prediction is that schools will go back as planned in June, with lessons being constantly learned about how social distancing works practically in a school setting, ready for schools to go back in September with all children on a part-time/small class size basis, until such time as social distancing measures can be relaxed enough to allow full school capacity.

In the meantime, everyone will be encouraged to work around reduced school hours by continuing working from home where possible.

I think that most workers will be back at work before summer, but obviously there are businesses going out of business every week, and that will have an impact on everything - people out of work, yet more empty retail units everywhere... etc

I love that film but I don’t really see a link.

I can’t rewatch it because a suicide theme is not good for me at the moment....but from what I remember, it’s not a great comparison.

Or are you comparing people’s behaviour?

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 18/05/2020 21:35

Remembering the illegal raves of my youth, I do wonder if we'll start getting more rebelling against the rules as the summer progresses if things aren't eased up.

I walked in the woods near us today, turned a corner in the path and found 2 snogging teens (who seemed very embarrassed to be caught!). Wondered how long young people will put up with no sex life?

Normal might have some restrictions, but I can't see it being far from previous normal by Christmas time without mass rebelling and a lot of anger at the government who's trying to limit us. The will to protect the vunerable will weaken with time.

Towards the end of the film, the main characters are sheltering on a remote farm, separated, 1 in the main house and 2 in the outbuilding. "The Happening", a botanical toxin, released on ever smaller crowds, then tiny groupings of people, has arrived at the farm. The protagonists communicate through a pipe(?) and shelter for a while before deciding that they dont want to live and be separated, huddled and hiding away, and they emerge fearfully outside towards each other. Just as they emerge outside and embrace, "The Happening" is over.

They chose to risk all, over lives trapped and huddled inside.

That and the feeling of horror when too many people come together in one place. Presciently amazing. 😂

Greenpop21 · 18/05/2020 21:47

Live with it like we live with fly/sepsis/ cancer, yes. Not in fear for what is mild for most.

MuthaFunka61 · 18/05/2020 21:47

If any one else watches Dr John Campbell's daily updates they'll have heard that a vaccine could be ready in 4 months (I'm sure that's the timeline but I could be mistaken)

Here's today's daily briefing,it contains some good news about the different treatments which are advanced in their development.

Wendigogo · 18/05/2020 21:50

I'd say early 2021 is a reasonable, best case scenario. It would require a vaccine to be found, be widely produced and available.

Woeismethischristmas · 18/05/2020 21:52

I think we will be dealing with this for years. I think restrictions will ease but I think working from home will be more normal. I think we will get used to the idea that a small proportion of people die from this and it'll slowly eke its way through the population. Honestly I'd be surprised if schools are back full-time before the end of next academic year. Totally hope that I'm wrong though. I feel for the elderly and those vulnerable who are very isolated. I'm hoping the ecomomy recovers and we are able to support thier shielding whilst herd immunity builds up.

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 21:52

Pics still don’t see a link, sorry.

Do you think people will break free from this madness?

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 21:53

I love ot when Mark talks to the plant! 😂

GarlicSoup · 18/05/2020 21:56

I think there'll be a new normal by then.

Completely agree with @IHaveBrilloHair

PicsInRed · 18/05/2020 21:58

LilacTree1

Sorry, yes, it's a behavioural link. I believe that people will eventually rebel and simply refuse to be cloistered away in their houses, not to see family and friends. They will take the risk and reenter the world - including those with cause to shield.

The scene with the talking to the plant is 😂

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 22:04

Pics if MN is anything to go by, that won’t happen till 2030.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 18/05/2020 22:15

A lot of predictions that there may be an economic downturn. Make of that what you may.

Wendigogo · 18/05/2020 22:38

Of course there'll be an economic downturn Confused

THEDEACON · 18/05/2020 22:49

the depute chief medical officer for England indicated today that Winter would suit the virus so I doubt early 2021 tbh

CleanHankie · 18/05/2020 23:03

Theatres are looking at different ways of operating. Much much smaller audiences and being filmed. Performances would then be available to view online for a small fee.

cyclingmad · 18/05/2020 23:20

Cineworld and other cinemas- why don't they just move to a subscription model in the meantime. Then again I won't be rushing back because ther eisn't going to be much to watch considering filming halted.

cyclingmad · 18/05/2020 23:21

By subscription I mean streaming aka netflix - even partner up with them to save money on having to build a platform.

OnGoldenPond · 18/05/2020 23:38

@TheMotherofAllDilemmas

You can still do all that at Gibraltar airport!
