To think life will be pretty much normal by early 2021?

I hope we are! A colleague said today (he has no extra knowledge or info) that he can't see us being back in the office before 2021.

Do you think Covid will be mostly behind us by then or we will still be living with restrictions?

I can't see how it can all be back to normal. People wont be able to sit beside each other in the theatre or attend sporting events or even concerts in less than 6 months.

Some things will definitely be back up and running but I suspect most of those will involve changes that were not necessary pre lockdown.

I dont need 100% normality I do however need to be able to see my family and friends ASAP.

NameChange84 · 18/05/2020 17:43

It depends on what your normal is.

I doubt concerts, theatre etc will go ahead for a while. Maybe even years.

Hobbies like orchestra rehearsals or group social dancing (salsa, ballroom etc) probably can’t go ahead for a while. Some sports. Drama classes.

I doubt that I will be able to do my hobbies for another year. International travel will change for quite some time to come. Even if you can go abroad, quarantine rules on return might mean that you wouldn’t have enough annual leave.

Then recovery of the economy isn’t going to happen for quite some time.

I can’t see things being “Normal” in early 2021.

HandfulOfFlowers · 18/05/2020 17:44

Yes, because some people will prefer to live with the risk of the virus rather than continue this miserable existence.

CaveMum · 18/05/2020 17:47

I hope things will start to return to normal in the autumn. We’ve got a lovely holiday booked in Spain in August which I fully anticipate will be cancelled.

cyclingmad · 18/05/2020 17:48

I dont think we will see any of the markings on floors etc being removed for a long long time incase they are needed again.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2020 17:49

I really Hope theatres open before then, it's my favourite thing Sad

Alsohuman · 18/05/2020 17:50

Absolutely. And if there’s a vaccine, we’ll be back to normal pretty quickly - or at least those of us who are vaccinated will.

NameChange84 · 18/05/2020 17:50

Mine too @LaurieFairyCake Sad

Nonnymum · 18/05/2020 17:51

Profesor Van Tam just said without a vaccine it could be years before things get fully back to normal.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 18/05/2020 17:52

Well... I have been guessing this pretty much every single day of this lockdown.
I am hoping that the British government monitors other European countries - Italy and Spain are opening pubs / restaurants in the coming weeks, schools are back in NL and other countries - and make any adjustment (IF needed) to the Brit public, otherwise I would be surprised if we were not back to some normality by October
Gyms open, cinema, hotels, full travel resumes (the same way, cannot imagine any restrictions being more than talk)

If it takes longer, we are considering relocating for the time being

SusieOwl4 · 18/05/2020 17:53

There are also tests on drugs for early treatment in the pipeline so I think it’s hard to make a prediction.

Do you remember how they used to treat tb? A bit like some other countriesare treating this virus . you were whisked away to be isolated in sanatoriums. Can’t imagine people putting up with that when there are objections to the ( not full) lockdown we have had .

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 18/05/2020 17:53

@Nonnymum - well Prof Van Tam thinks February has 30 days! Grin

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 18/05/2020 17:55

Wrt to vaccine - I am the first one to sign up for a vaccine AFTER being tested negative to CV. First we need to sort out the testing, then we know whether and who needs a vaccine.
What`s the point of rushing / waiting for the vaccine if herd immunity is already in place (and I got it and developed the antigens)? Confused

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 18/05/2020 17:56

I hope so. But I don’t think so. I think work and school will look very different for a long time yet. And then leisure activities like concerts and the cinema, I think that could be way into the future. It’s depressing to think about.
I think people will see family and friends normally by then though, the government know lots of people are doing that anyway.

Alsohuman · 18/05/2020 17:57

N Ireland is now allowing six people from different households to meet outside. It’ll be interesting to see what happens there.

Truthpact · 18/05/2020 18:01

I hope so, my wedding is next year. Confused

Kind of only really got a few more months before some businesses start struggling badly.

1forsorrow · 18/05/2020 18:02

Maybe theatres, cinemas, trains, buses, restaurants and other things will be redesigned so we aren't all squashed together. How lovely to sit down to watch something or go on a journey without being wedged against a stranger.

I suppose everything would get more expensive but I'd love the space.

MH1111 · 18/05/2020 18:03

Provided the NHS isn’t over run I think adults should be able to make their own decisions as to what they feel safe doing ie if you want to go to the theatre and your not In a high risk group (most of us) you should

1forsorrow · 18/05/2020 18:04

@Truthpact hope it is all sorted in time for your big day, one thing is for sure and that is that you chose 2021 not 2020.

tiredanddangerous · 18/05/2020 18:06

I really hope so but I doubt it. I think there’s going to have to be a new normal until a vaccine is produced. I definitely don’t think large gatherings of people (ie theatre, cinema, concerts etc) will be happening in 2021.

vanillandhoney · 18/05/2020 18:06

I think there'll be a new normal by then, and we'll just adapt to that.

cyclingmad · 18/05/2020 18:06

Prague is allowing gatherings of 1000 people this side of xmas so you never know

tmh88 · 18/05/2020 18:08

I hope so got a holiday booked for October and hoping we can still go! Anyone else got any holidays booked end of year?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 18/05/2020 18:08

Yup, and I'd chance saying that it will probably feel much more normal well before that.

And now we await the Covid Dementors to tell us all that we won't be able to hug a loved one any time before 2050 and holidays will be banned forever .

Truthpact · 18/05/2020 18:08

@1forsorrow

I know, thank god we chose next year. I'm worried for the hotel if they manage to stay open through this. They aren't owned by a massive company so don't have any extra protection saving them really. Bit worrying if they lose their livelihood.
