To expect them to wear gloves when serving food?

So I'm currently at current my local beauty spot as we live near the sea and thought I'd treat the kids to an ice cream as first time out in weeks. However I noticed inside there were 2 people serving and neither were wearing gloves and both were handling the money then handing out the cones. Dh said I'm being ott but even with out corona that's pretty gross right??

Uh huh

user1497207191 · 17/05/2020 21:03

YANBU. I think that's gross in normal times, but absolutely awful at the moment with covid. Afraid I'd be walking away.

Moonlite · 17/05/2020 21:05

This is why I always get tubs rather than cones even before corona. They should absolutely be wearing gloves

SauvignonBlanche · 17/05/2020 21:06

It would be much worse if they were wearing gloves to handle both the money and the ice cream.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/05/2020 21:07

Also worrying that there are 2 staff members inside the ice van yet they have a sign saying line up 2 metres outside van. Yep we didn't get ice cream 😔

I never eat the cone where you hold it anyway.

Don't know how gloves would help though. Touching the cone with the same gloves that have touched the money.

Nicknacky · 17/05/2020 21:07

I wouldn’t be bothered about gloves as they can be filthy, but they should be wrapping the cone in paper or something.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/05/2020 21:07

Sure one should be serving then other handling money not doing a bit of both 🙄

Maybe the people inside the van lived in the same house.

How do you take the ice cream from their hand while social distancing unless you have arms like Mr Tickle?

Herpesfreesince03 · 17/05/2020 21:10

Any bacteria that goes on their hands will just go on the gloves instead. Unless they’re changing the gloves after handling every cone/money there’s literally no difference

HappyHammy · 17/05/2020 21:10

Thats grim. It reminds me of butchers who handle raw meat then take your cash.Smile🤢🤮

Shoppingwithmother · 17/05/2020 21:10

The two people are at work and do not need to be 2m apart if they cannot. Them being closer together than 2m doesn’t make them any more likely to infect you.

Gloves aren’t magic. They don’t instantly dissolve the virus. It would be better if they weren’t handling both money and ice creams though.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 17/05/2020 22:17

Mayeb they were from the same house I hope so as very confined in an Ice cream van. Agree they didn't use a tissue to hold cone which is gross. One should have served and one should have taken the money, she then could have used gloves if not touching the money.

AriadnesFilament · 17/05/2020 22:20

Unless they’re going to change their gloves every time in between handling money and serving food then the gloves are pointless.

Cheesecakejar · 17/05/2020 22:26

The gloves are not the issue here, people could wear the same gloves all day without changing them! They are still touching everything as if they would be with bare hands so germs are still spreading. As PP suggested a tissue would be preferable or like you say even each person doing a different job but I think people are so precious about food, you do realise most food you eat out in cafes/restaurants is prepared by real life humans that probably won't be wearing gloves? Even if the front of house person is wearing them your food will still have been touched at some point!

Doggybiccys · 17/05/2020 22:35

This thread goes to show how much the current coronavirus is due to globalisation.

When I grew up, everyone handled food and put into bags - the butcher, baker, ice cream van man, soup van etc. We weren’t dying then cos most people just got on with it. People couldn’t afford to fly. Now everyone is spreading germs all over the place. Go figure.

Moonlite · 17/05/2020 23:31

I was always funny about people serving food without gloves tbh, they could have picked their nose or scratched their balls beforehand Grin but yeah coronavirus has definitely heightened the fear!

SquashedSpring · 17/05/2020 23:33

The problem is handling money and handling the food, whether they're wearing gloves or not doesn't make a difference.

SquirtleSquad · 17/05/2020 23:39

It wasn't until my little newphew started cancer treatment that I realised how unhygienic ice cream can be. He's not allowed it because of the risks and when the make a wish foundation people came round to see him he said all he wanted was a McFlurry - his mum was (jokingly) gutted he didn't ask for a round the world cruise Grin

DonLewis · 17/05/2020 23:42

Ah, the magic gloves that don't transfer money germs to food. Clean hands/dirty gloves...hiw do you tell the difference?

ClassicCola · 17/05/2020 23:43

Wearing gloves will make no difference. Gloves don't have an anti germ repellent on them.

user1497207191 · 18/05/2020 07:53

Ice cream vans are easy.

You only need one hand to hold the cone. One hand for cone (with glove), one hand for money (with or without glove, but still better with glove).

That's how I've seen it done loads of times.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 18/05/2020 07:57

.

To expect them to wear gloves when serving food?
StCharlotte · 18/05/2020 08:15

Actually when I was a kid the butchers had a separate cashier.

redwoodmazza · 18/05/2020 08:37

@Sparklingbrook
I never eat the cone either. We once had a dog who didn't - treated it like a bit of cardboard!!!! Sensible dog.
