So help please if you can -

Finally got some savings together

Always wanted to get a static caravan for an office/play area for the kids / place for friends to stay

I saw one yesterday
8 years old
Not bad condition
Would need a new bathroom and two new single beds
1200 inc delivery
I have space on my land

So yes go for it
Or no - keep your savings?

Thanks in advance :) xx

Yes go for it! Extra space is amazing and seems a good price :)

avroroad · 17/05/2020 11:24

I wouldn't. I can't think of anything worse than sitting in a caravan to dry and work/study. If that's the kind of thing that you would like then go for it.

avroroad · 17/05/2020 11:25

Oh, and if your savings are just the cost of the caravan then definitely not. If your savings exceed that amount by a fair bit then it's reasonable to spend some.

Pelleas · 17/05/2020 11:26

How long would one that's already 8 years old be likely to last? That would be the crucial thing in my decision-making.

Just a note of caution - do make sure you see it in person before paying any money. There are a lot of caravan-related scams at the moment relying on lockdown making it hard for people to go and to view them, so people send money by bank transfer for non-existent caravans, motorhomes etc.

CostaCosta · 17/05/2020 11:28

If you don't i will!

rawlikesushi · 17/05/2020 11:33

If you've got savings to spare, a secure job, the cash and time to do it up and like static caravans then go for it.

If it's going to become a mouldering eyesore that you can't afford to make habitable, or if you might need the money for something less frivolous, or if you think static caravans are noisy/ugly structures that you'll soon tire of, don't bother.

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 11:34

Interesting !!

Thank you
I saw it
It's lovely
Would need new carpets too

Have 2k in savings
I need to also get new wooden floors for some room on my own house
So was planning on caravan first

Just worried I will regret it ??

I wouldn’t, it will look tatty and take up all your savings once you’ve done thebwork needed on it. If you have no spare room for kids to play and for visitors then I guess your house is small and a static caravan in the garden right next to the house would not look nice. Why not keep saving to buy a bigger house?

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 11:45

It would be located a short walk from the house
Looking for a project
But also hoping to get it lovely enough for friends to stay

Thank you guys

I wouldn't spend over half my savings on a caravan that will cost money and still deteriorate.

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 12:15

True

Thanks all I'm thinking
Do the floors
Install a v small en-suite bathroom to my girls room

And maybe one day go for the caravan
I was ready to pay for it yesterday and I held off
Glad I did

A summerhouse would be nicer.

lanthanum · 17/05/2020 12:34

You probably need planning permission.

rawlikesushi · 17/05/2020 13:45

I think you've made the right decision, op.

£2000 savings isn't very much in the scheme of things. I think I'd be hanging onto it for a rainy day, or at least until we are on the other side of the pandemic.

But new flooring, if you need it, is a much better choice.

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 16:02

Re planning permission will look into this tomorrow

Summer house?
No idea where to start

Never had savings until this year so getting way way ahead of myself

OP posts:
beepbeep · 17/05/2020 16:31

If it's a static I think you may need planning, depending on where it is going. How close are you to neighbours? (just wondering how they might feel about a static caravan parked next to them?)

I'd put mo key into your house first, that will affect you day to day and keeping you the maintenance of your house will keep up the value. A caravan might be ice but it's not going to increase in value, so prioritise the house?

beepbeep · 17/05/2020 16:31

'money' not mo key!!!

Disquieted1 · 17/05/2020 16:35

What a lot of killjoys!
Buy the caravan.

avroroad · 17/05/2020 16:50

*What a lot of killjoys!

Oh grow up for goodness sake. OP asked for opinions. My grown up, responsible, adult opinion is that spending over half your savings on something that will cost money straight away and depreciate Is not a sensible idea.

Buy the caravan.

Yes, buy it. Chuck away your very low level of savings in the middle of a global pandemic where the economy is fucked and there is next to no job security. Great idea.

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 17:11

Yikes !!!

My heart would love it

I need to hold on to my savings and maybe see one year from now if 1200 could be justified
Possibly not !!!

Would have been something to keep my mind busy
Useful to have space for office
But so important to have rainy day savings account which I have never had !!

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 17/05/2020 17:40

I wouldn't. It's not just the purchase price but the upkeep (security, insurance, gas/electricity/water hook up) it'll need heating over the winter because they're freezing otherwise and can get mouldy.

You'll want insurance in case it catches fire, for example. Also how are you going to keep it secure? If it gets broken into then you have that to deal with too.

Also the cost of getting it transported to your preferred location.

Not the best investment ever unfortunately.

Dieu · 17/05/2020 17:43

Heart says yes, head says no! Smile

notsorighteousthesedays · 17/05/2020 17:45

I’d go for it - so many things you could do with it. Sadly my garden is no where near big enough or I’d try and outbid you!! Smile It might even save your sanity if we have to return to a stricter lockdown.....

dublingirl653 · 17/05/2020 17:48

Thank you so much

Ohh the mould yes had not considered that
So we are lucky in that we have 100 acres of land

It would be lovely
I have gone from 90 per cent sure I want it
To around 20 per cent
For someone with not much money 1200 is a bit chunk
This includes transportation

Re neighbours it would be down a field with a gorgeous view
If friends came they could stay as long as they want in the summer
But maybe another time

So now to see if I can manage a tiny en suite for 2-3 k and then save more for new flooring as the carpet we have stinks so bad (maybe 20 years on the ground in the house )

Heart is treacherous! None of us have any idea how the world will look once we come out of this pandemic. But it's likely to be very different! £2000 is not a lot in savings, how long would it keep you going if you didn't have an income? What might you need it for if you were to have to survive on jobseekers? Personally, I think now is the time to build savings rather than spend them on non essentials.
