Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:25

Boris has said his being overweight contributed to his problems with Covid-19.
Stories this morning suggest he will wage war on fat...

What type of help do you think might be suggested?

Have you decided to lose weight due to Covid-19 worries?

YABU - no I will not lose weight due to Covid worries
YANBU - I will lose weight due to Covid worries

He doesn't need a war on fat. He needs a war on poverty, poor public transport networks, lack of cycle lanes, lack of safe walking pavements, employers who turn a blind eye to office staff working through lunch, vanity sizing, people using lifts and escalators instead of stairs and the endless high sugar and high fat junk food that is available everywhere now.

I truly hope his scare has made him turn over a new leaf and he comes out the other side healthier. For a wealthy person he's in surprisingly bad shape.

AmelieTaylor · 15/05/2020 15:08

@jackdawdawn

He isn't wrong though. Heard earlier that one quarter of victims were diabetics

And ??

You clearly haven't bothered to find out why that may be🙄🙄

Let me help you out a bit...

It is a fact that people with diabetes are at increased risk of infections including influenza and for related complications such as secondary bacterial pneumonia. Diabetes patients have impaired immune-response to infection both in relation to cytokine profile and to changes in immune-responses including T-cell and macrophage activation.15 Poor glycaemic control impairs several aspects of the immune response to viral infection and also to the potential bacterial secondary infection in the lungs.16

I contacted my GP about having a binge eating disorder, all the key factors which come into play ticked (child abuse, molestation and much more) and couldn't get any further than that. Very very unhealthy and aware that I have a problem but after endless attempts at dieting and changing things, one down tick and I am hoarding food like a bear getting ready to hibernate. I know its my problem and the science of losing weight but mental health has seriously crippled me in this regard.

Oliversmumsarmy

Are you vegan? Otherwise I’d replace the highly processed breakfast shake with baked eggs, spinach and mushroom, lunch Gould be simple ploughman’s with , nuts, lettuce and cheese or a salad with protein and something tasty like a lentil curry for supper.
2 weeks 10lbs.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/05/2020 15:13

fascinated

But if I am on a crash diet then why isn’t the weight falling off?

For me personally I haven’t really cut that many calories from what I was eating.
3 or 4 sandwiches with 3 or 4 coffees
I was trying to eat a little healthier. Cut out the coffee and bread (I usually eat wheat free) and add in more green veg and protein.
I suppose I have always gone to bed hungry and woken up hungry so nothing unusual there but now I don’t have a couple of rounds of bread to satiate the hunger. The shakes are ok but they take time to quell the hunger pangs

Most diets I find I end up giving up on as I usually can’t keep up with the amount of food and I end up putting weight on.

Slimming World I had to stop after 3 days as it was just too much. I just felt bloated and the scales were heading in the wrong direction dramatically

That sounds really good! Only thing is that I would throw away lettuce and used dark leaves like cress or rocket. Congrats!

Almostfifty · 15/05/2020 15:16

I am exercising more and therefore burning up more calories, but still eating the same, which has always been healthily. Because of this I've lost six pounds since lockdown started and expect to lose more, although I'm almost back to my proper weight. I figure if I'm going to get this virus I should be as fit and healthy as I can be in order to fight it.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/05/2020 15:17

@ToffeeYoghurt Excellent post.

ramseyspamsey · 15/05/2020 15:18

Wait, being overweight puts you more at risk of ill health and/or death?? Why didn't anyone tell us this before??? If we knew it was bad for us, we all would have lost weight years ago!

Thank you Boris, our saviour! 🙏

Lostmyshityear9 · 15/05/2020 15:18

@Xenia so in your world then, fat people's taxes and contributions they make to society that can't necessarily be quantified in monetary terms (as doctors, nurses, counsellors, social workers, mental health support workers, teachers, charity workers, volunteers...) have no value? We don't actually need all the fat people to make any kind of contribution whatsoever? I am more than just my weight, I accept the consequences of that (and may well pay for them with my life should I contract this virus) but if you can't accept me as a full member of our society with the same rights as everyone else, then why should I make any kind of contribution? Where does it stop? People who drink drive, people who drink too much, who take drugs, who have mental health problems, who sleep around and get STIs, who don't sleep around but still get STIs, who fall down mountainsides and need rescuing..... I know people hate me - I'm fat, I'm a single mum, I'm a teacher, but fucking hell, I work hard and I contribute an awful lot to our society. Women like you are utterly out of touch with reality.

fromdownwest · 15/05/2020 15:20

@Oliversmumsarmy - Do not follow these fad diets, meal replacement drinks etc. Pointless and generally full of sugar.

If you were consuming less calories than you BMR you will lose weight. So either you are not being wholly hoenst with the calories you are consuming, or you are not burning enough calories.

Any other opinion is arguing with science, you may have some days where you hold more water etc, but over a sustained timeframe you will lose weight.

Replace the shake with porridge for the same calorie content and your body will appreciate it a lot more.

With all that protein, your body has no use for it!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/05/2020 15:20

Vanity sizing drives me insane. I’m bigger than I was as a size 10 18yo but now I’m a 6-8? Wtf.

We just need to eat healthily. Not booze. Not smoke. A few of you on this thread have a lot of insight on why your overweight but the changing it seems hard to implement?. The nhs needs to unlock why this is because it would be amazing to turn this country around. We’d stop so many cancers, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.

It’s taken lockdown for my dh to realise that I don’t just eat what I want, I eat really healthily compared to him. He has diabetes 🤦🏻‍♀️.

missperegrinespeculiar · 15/05/2020 15:22

IncrediblySadToo right, sounds like you are doing it all and correctly, sorry I misunderstood, I really hope it eventually works for you! good luck!

flirtygirl · 15/05/2020 15:23

Boris can f off. He has enough money to have a personal trainer, chef, best tasting low car and carb meals etc and had all the privileges but is still fat.

How much harder is it for low income, no place to exercise, health conditions, disability etc ad infinitum??

Or would Boris with all that privilege admit that he was not motivated to lose weight before nearly losing his life??

Some people have even less motivation, if food is their only joy in a truly shit life.

flirtygirl · 15/05/2020 15:24

KCal not car

VaTeLaverLesMains · 15/05/2020 15:24

Being too thin is also a bad idea if you catch COVID. Having a stone to lose before hitting underweight is better. I'm outing on a bit just in case.

I do think positive public health messages are sensible just now. Drinking loads of alcohol is bad for immunity, diabetes, blood pressure, asthma control needs to be optimal. Eat well, sleep plenty if you can.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/05/2020 15:25

@Vampyress

I listened to a R4 show where an weight loss clinic said they didn’t have one patient who hadn’t been abused some way in childhood so you are not alone.

Maybe if the gp could send you for help about that the eating would be easier to control?.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 15/05/2020 15:26

Putting on a bit of weight, I should say.

IncrediblySadToo · 15/05/2020 15:28

@Oliversmumsarmy

That's really interesting re your sleep

As well as my many other issues, not sleeping is an issue too.

I know 'getting more sleep' is better for diabetes and obesity but it's rare to see it laid out so starkly.

It's on my 'must do better' list, but at the moment Covid & the birds seem to think 4:30 is 'getting up time!' And I can't go to bed at 8! (I'd be awake at 2🙄).

I get exactly what you're saying about trying the meal replacements & still not losing anything -been there, done that.

As for 'going slower' 🙄🙄

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/05/2020 15:29

@flirtygirl

Eating healthily is cheap though. Pulses, legumes, veg, fruit, pasta, tinned fish are all very cheap but really filling because their unprocessed.

A processed meal won’t fill you up as much for as long.

Maybe learning to cook is something else to add to the list?.

Reginabambina · 15/05/2020 15:32

My health is not at risk from my weight but I’m on the boundary of being fat. This whole this has made me more aware of my weight problem and I’m starting to loose weight so that I can drop down to a slim size (giving myself a bit of leeway as I age, no harm in mitigation).

GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 15/05/2020 15:33

I am overweight and had a fairly nasty case of covid. No hospital needed (though maybe if I had been in Germany???) but it was moderate rather than mild and the symptoms were long lasting, I had a fever for a month for example.

Anyway I am thinking I am going to lose weight because immunity might not last or it might mutate.

Also as a fairly active pear shaped person who never gets ill I didn't think being overweight was affecting my health just my appearance in a swim suit.

Now I am not so sure.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 15/05/2020 15:34

There are some massively fucked up attitudes to eating on this thread. You don't need to give up cards, or sugar, or "processed" foods (hint: pretty much everything you eat is "processed"). Just watch your portion sizes, eat plenty of veg, try to avoid snacks and don't overdo the booze.

I lost 3.5 stone 3 years ago doing that. It has stayed off ever since and I still eat white carbs, sugar (Shock), full fat dairy etc.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 15/05/2020 15:35

Carbs obvs, not cards.

Xenia · 15/05/2020 15:36

Lost, no one hates you. The country and NHS however deserve to get most people back to a healthy weight - it will help ensure children grow up with a mother in covid 19 times etc.
