Boris declares war on fat

Weallhavevalidopinions · 15/05/2020 09:25

Boris has said his being overweight contributed to his problems with Covid-19.
Stories this morning suggest he will wage war on fat...

What type of help do you think might be suggested?

Have you decided to lose weight due to Covid-19 worries?

YABU - no I will not lose weight due to Covid worries
YANBU - I will lose weight due to Covid worries

The vast majority of people who are overweight eat too much or are too sedentary

For me my weight doesn’t correspond to how much or little I have eaten. Mine is about how much sleep I get.
Sleep 8+ hours and I can drop 4lbs in weight from one day to the next
Sleep 7hours and it is 2lbs less

6 hours maybe 1/2lb

My usual 5 hours and I stay the same

Anything less which is a regular thing and I start putting on weight.

3hours which is quite usual and it doesn’t matter that I have only eaten 800 calories the day before I put. On 2lbs

fascinated · 15/05/2020 14:08

It’s portion control.

Half a pizza with no chips and filling up on veg sticks and salad or whatever plus a glass of sparkling water is a damn sight fewer calories than a pizza supper and a can of coke.

Once a fortnight is also half the calories of once a week.

Full fat Cappuccino twice a day vs every second day is a quarter of the calories.

Etc.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 15/05/2020 14:09

There was a thread recently here where OP wondered about genetics because her friend eat the same, if not more but was slimmer. It did come out that the friend runs in the mornings etc. Lead to interesting discussion about people who keep moving (even tiny moves or just getting up often) vs others.

I eat like a horse before and was size 10. Never exercised and drunk like medieval king. I did however, walked (jogged if certain manager was on a shift) miles as a waitress. Which lots of people didn't realise so they moaned at me for being able to demolish massive pizzas.

Well, I left that job. And here I am years later and double the size🙄

fascinated · 15/05/2020 14:09

Lack of sleep causes you to eat more.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 15/05/2020 14:12

Or maybe if it had been said but someone who wasn’t themselves extremely fat? Mind you I guess he’s a case in point - he ended up in intensive care!

Pebbles574 · 15/05/2020 14:16

If it translates into more cash and policies designed to support healthy living then it can't be a bad thing, can it?

jackdawdawn · 15/05/2020 14:19

He isn't wrong though. Heard earlier that one quarter of victims were diabetics.

Really not surprising this thing has hit Britain and America so hard - we must have the fattest, unhealthiest, most sedentary people in the world.

Being overweight and middle aged and male is not a good combination with this thing - maybe BJ realises that now? He and Chris W and Matt H got ill at the same time - they were fine and he ended up in ICU. Must have been a real shock to him.

Coyoacan · 15/05/2020 14:21

Oliversmumsarmy. Yes, the important thing is the quality of the food, more than the amount.

Obesity is just one of many health problems caused by processed food.

Instead of counting calories, the important thing is to cut out processed food.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 15/05/2020 14:25

@bridgetreilly
Yes I also hate the war/battle language used for illness. However a psycholgist today has described the psychological effects health workers are showing as very typical ofsodiers returning from a war zone

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 15/05/2020 14:25

Instead of counting calories, the important thing is to cut out processed food.

Tbh with counting calories you will cut out lots of heavily processed food because it just wouldn't often fit into allowance.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/05/2020 14:27

When are posters on this site going to start waging war on Boris? You know the figurehead of the party who has systematically refused to reform/properly fund the NHS?

This is just yet another goady thread, neatly wrapped to blame Boris (which I don't have an issue with) to attack posters on this site (which i do take issue with).

Yes, yes, calories in/calories out yada yada, we know it. What do YOU think, OP, Boris will do to tackle the poverty that very much underlines what people can/want/are able to afford to do to tackle unhealthy lifestyles?

So what are you, OP, going to do about that, since you have very much of an interest having started this interesting and not at all, inflammatory thread?

EmeraldShamrock · 15/05/2020 14:30

It seems easy to say monitor calories in vs calories out, the same for an alcoholic or drug addict if they stop using they'll get better, we know it isn't simple at all.
They need to put in the supports mentioned on the thread.
Unfortunately I agree it is something that needs to change, my DM passed away from Covid. She had obesity hypoventilation, she was 69 big but you wouldn't do a double take at her
14 stone at 5.2. Her weight was a big factor in her demise.

ivykaty44 · 15/05/2020 14:32

This was one of the main reasons exe cerise was promoted outside and now is unrestricted each day

If people want to lose weight to have less chance of being in intensive care if they catch Covid19 then fair play to them, it will be a contributing factor. If though they don't want to then find, the risk will be there and greatly higher so not point in waging war on them as its their own affair

Language used is very important, if the headline was Boris wants to encourage weight loss to save the pain he himself suffered in intensive care - rather than war on fatties

Boris has a BMI of 36 - or did before this. Trump thinks he's healthy but he is certainly larger than Boris, I doubt whether Trump would survive this virus should he become infected

ChaToilLeam · 15/05/2020 14:34

This is just going to lead to more counter-productive fat-bashing. If you want to keep people fat, then make sure they are stressed, insecure with jobs and housing, and financially disadvantaged. Not that you can’t be fat without these things being true, but it makes it far more difficult to lose weight. People find comfort in eating when life is shit.

I have lost a lot of weight and am glad of it, but it would have been much harder without being able to spend money on a low carb diet, having space and time to exercise at home, and being able to get out and about in a safe neighbourhood. Nice to have a sympathetic and encouraging doctor too.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/05/2020 14:35

I'm sorry about your Mum, EmeraldShamrock. Bloody virus.

MorrisZapp · 15/05/2020 14:36

Is Boris poor? On the breadline? Using a food bank? Of course he isn't. He's a rich guy who eats too much. Loads of perfectly comfortably off and indeed wealthy people have weight issues. If poverty was eradicated tomorrow, there would still be lots of overweight people about. Fattening food tastes yummy.

Does anyone seriously think that upmarket restaurants are serving lower calorie food than MacDs? Or that a Pret muffin isn't fattening?

It's the usual blame game, anything to avoid having to expect people to take responsibility for themselves.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/05/2020 14:36

But why can thin people eat pizza and cake and takeaway and drink all the wine and not be the same size as me?

If you really examine what thin people do you’ll find that they probably don’t have lots of pizza, cake and alcohol in one sitting. I’m not thin my any means but I can never manage more than 2-3 slices of pizza (I eat the crusts too!) with some water. My stomach bloats with fizzy drink so I skip it and if I have wine it will be a small glass an hour after the food.

I rarely eat cake as it’s only for special ocassions so when I do have it I will make an event out of it - DH and I’ll have a big slice each with coffee instead of lunch/breakfast.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 15/05/2020 14:37

Lots of people believe it. I once checked Jamie Oliver's menu... Shameful. Fucking shameful. Would be probs better in Maccies

LemonyCupcake · 15/05/2020 14:37

We have paid the price for being the fattest unhealthiest nation in Europe

HeIenaDove · 15/05/2020 14:40

So get ready for more denigration of the overweight people who also happen to be poor.

Boris can start by ensuring care workers are paid more money so they are not living in one room and sharing kitchens (like the one in the Channel 4 news report last night) so they can have the money and the time to cook healthy meals.

Alsohuman · 15/05/2020 14:43

I doubt whether Trump would survive this virus should he become infected

You’d think someone would have the wit to infect him, wouldn’t you?

HeIenaDove · 15/05/2020 14:43

Channel 4 news did a huge segment on care workers. And how they are under paid , under valued, classed as low skilled and why they cant socially distance due to the appalling places some of them live in.

A care worker interviewed lives in one room with her son and they share bathroom and kitchen facilities with ten other families
Hardly an ideal living situation to cook healthy meals

A care worker was ill with Covid for 28 days and was brought a hot meal every day by Hare Krishna She has to walk an hour to get to work and same to get home because she cant afford public transport

Well it's not 'goady' - it is a simple comment after reading a news story today and my attempts to make myself less likely to succumb to Covid as an overweight person (2 stone overweight). I have struggled with my weight for several years now and know why I am overweight but the catalyst of potentially dying from the virus has made me think of what I can do to improve my chances.

What have I done. Well today I have taken 2 meal replacements of 200 calories each and tonight I will cook dinner for all of us and eat with my family - home cooked lasagne (yep I know it's full of calories) with vegetables and fruit for pudding. No alcohol tonight.

This morning I went for a walk with my children and dogs and I have done a bit (it was hard) of a Joe Wicks workout for adults.

I know it's just day 1 but I intend to give it a go.

Good luck to anyone losing weight/getting fitter; I know it's hard - or at least I find it hard.

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Thank you.
I think the majority including me are going to make changes after this, not just physically but mentally too.
