If nurseries/schools open on 1st June will you be sending your child?

My son is 2 and has autism, before lockdown he was signed up to a small special needs nursery (12 children). He was due to start and then the pandemic hit.

I've heard from the nursery today who say they'll be reopening on 1st June all being well.

Due to the young age of the kids and the fact they all have SEN I think social distancing will be nigh on impossible.

I'm conflicted and would appreciate some input before I make my decision.

Are you sending yours?
Would you send DS if you were me?

YANBU - Yes you would send the DC
YABU - No you wouldn't

Yes I will be sending mine when I can (pre school and year 1) and probably would in your situation but understand it's a personal decision based on risk perception and benefits.

SunbathingDragon · 13/05/2020 15:10

No I won’t be sending mine but I can understand and agree with why some people are sending theirs.

Neverender · 13/05/2020 15:20

Yes I will. I'm being paid to do a full time job which I can't do at the moment. DD has no health conditions though.

icelollycraving · 13/05/2020 15:20

If I am back at work, then yes, no other option. Ds is an only child and is missing school. I feel conflicted and if I am still furloughed, then no.

Wtfdoipick · 13/05/2020 15:22

Dd is an only child and is missing the social side badly so I will be sending her as soon as possible. I'm not however bothered about it being fulltime, I'd be happy with say 2 half days a week

itsallopticsanyway · 13/05/2020 15:29

No I won't. My 4 year old is at preschool and we're planning a long, enhanced transition to the primary next door all year (she has ASD and an EHCP).

Because of the ASD, getting her back to preschool after being at home for this long will be a big unsettling transition in itself. Add to that they then have six weeks off, and I don't think the benefits outweigh the risks. I am aware that children are low risk but I still feel like this is testing the unknown somewhat. I'd like some hard facts before I put my child at higher risk than I really need to.

This is an easier decision for me that some, because I'm a stay at home parent (well I'm actually DDs carer technically, but you know what I mean). So I have no childcare needs other than really bloody needing a break myself, which I can suck up until September 😩

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/05/2020 15:30

Yes I’ll send mine back ASAP- I don’t expect social distancing in a nursery, more restrictions on adults in the building and increased cleaning.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 13/05/2020 15:30

Yes. Children don’t need to social distance.

CallmeAngelina · 13/05/2020 15:31

Children don’t need to social distance.
Since when?
And stuff the staff, of course?

Peppafrig · 13/05/2020 15:33

No

EatDessertFirst · 13/05/2020 15:34

Yes. My DD is in year six and needs the correct transition to secondary. My Year four DS will also go back when its his time. I'm furloughed until at least the end of June so I could keep them off but we have no underlying health conditions. I'm sure the schools will come up with safe ways of ensuring everyone is as protected as can be but the time has come for some sort of normality. We can't put our lives on hold forever as the long term damage would be incomprehensible.
Though judging by the absolute hysteria on my local FB pages, people are convinced this is the end of the world and Boris is hurling our young kids under a bus. Ridiculous.

Llamapolice · 13/05/2020 15:37

Yes, I'm back at work and the risk to her is negligible. I would hesitate if they were socially distancing but I highly doubt they will attempt that in nursery, I'm sure it's impossible.

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 15:41

Nope. I’m seven months pregnant and there’s no way I’d risk it.

Bluntness100 · 13/05/2020 15:44

Do you have anyone shielded at home? Or is he on the shielded list?

If not the risk is miniscule and the benefit will far outweigh it.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 13/05/2020 16:13

Why is there ANOTHER thread on this!!!!!!

Bringmewineandcake · 13/05/2020 16:19

Mine is also opening fully again on 1st June but I won't be sending her. At the moment I plan to wait it out for when primary opens for Year 2 and then make a decision that either both my kids will go back to school / preschool or neither. It will just depend on how things go over the next few weeks.

Buzzfrightyears · 13/05/2020 16:21

My nursery has remained open and the majority of children there have parents who are drs and nurses
They haven’t had a single case of cv in any of the staff. Of course this is anecdotal but if their parents are exposed and catch the virus surely the children would’ve brought it into nursery? It seems quite safe to me..

Redskylark · 13/05/2020 16:25

I'm undecided atm but leaning towards no. I'm working PT and husband is managing, however if his workload increases lots we'd need his mum to have dd2 who is younger and I dont want dd1 going to school potentially getting it and passing it on to my in laws through dd2, I hope that makes sense. Anyway I'm thinking itd be better to keep her at home and mil can safely have them both if needs be

fandajji · 13/05/2020 16:28

Adding myself to the yes list. I'm a teacher so will be back, therefore my kids will in nursery and school. Except year 8 DS who is very disappointed and desperate to get back!

lunar1 · 13/05/2020 16:34

Nope, our numbers are still too high. People seem to have very little regard to the safety of our children's teachers.

Sh05 · 13/05/2020 17:05

I'm not sending my daughter in, my older 3 are home and she's really shot up in the last two months and I got rid of her uniform as she'd outgrown it. She's not going to the same schools reception so doesn't make sense to buy a new one for a month

Sh05 · 13/05/2020 17:06

Plus our headteacher has said they will only reopen if they can get clear guidance on how to keep everyone safe and the stuff that came out this week is not enough!

Crabbo · 13/05/2020 17:09

My daughter is desperate to get back so I’d like to send her a couple of days a week but I’m pregnant so I think probably not... I’m not sure yet.

Perqut · 13/05/2020 17:21

Thanks for the replies, I can WFH for the time being so don't need him to go, but my job would be alot less stressful if he did.

Nobody in our family is shielding, there is a chance we may have had the virus in late March - early April (NHS 111 said suspected covid) but no test so have to make any decision based on the probability that we didn't and therefore have no antibodies.

Why is there ANOTHER thread on this!!!!!!

Because several parents want to ask the question and not everybody spends alot of time on MN to see the pre existing threads. Calm down.

He is only due to go for two days per week, not full time. If that's relevant.
