Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

People want you to stay away for your own good. They don't want a spike in infections which would decimate businesses even more than 6 weeks of no tourists.

If you all stream down here, have your 2 weeks holiday then go back, we'll be looking at a secind wave here in September, just when the rest of the country is starting to get back to normal. A second wave here over the Winter period, perhaps with more flooding, will finish most tourism businesses more effectively than 6 weeks of no tourists but the furlough scheme.

Chiyo666 · 14/05/2020 08:19

@understandmenow it’s true though! I went out with the coast guard last summer as they short staffed. Every single person we went to was either a drunk tourist or a stupid one.

dottiedodah · 14/05/2020 08:20

I appreciate people from Devon/Cornwall are concerned about their health service coping under pressure .But how will their economy cope without the holiday pounds? We live along the South Coast ,and there is a huge amount of revenue brought in by holiday makers .I appreciate living here(spent my childhood in London )and not having to drive long distances for a taste of the sea!My concern is without the extra revenue we could be facing a hefty rise in Council tax and cuts to services .Next year all the "lucky" people from D and C will probably be begging for everyone to return !

rosydreams · 14/05/2020 08:22

i am in a similar boat i really wanted to go on holiday this year with my family. We only paid a £25 deposit though. But payment due end of june for mid july. But if its still to dangerous to go out i cant see it happening ,i think this summer is cancelled

just see what you can do about the deposit read the small print see if theres anything you can do about getting it back

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/05/2020 08:23

You could well be right @ITonyah, they are part of the hospitality industry so 4th July at the earliest.

We'll see, we'll plan to go and if we can't then that's fine too.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 08:23

@Chiyo666 and that's why I won't be going to Devon or Cornwall because the locals are so ignorant they think all tourists are drunk or stupid!

Won't be getting my money again and if another Boscastle happens, I won't contribute this time.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/05/2020 08:23

I get it is frustrating when holiday/cottage operators refuse to refund, but losing money is surely a drop in the ocean compared to the devastation a massive influx of tourists that bring covid with them?

Do people really care about a holiday more than protecting people from dying?

I’m in Norwich which currently has the lowest death rate of any city in the country 4/100,000. I’d rather like it to stay that way.

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 08:23

@ITonyah you keep mentioning the furlough scheme but don't business have to start paying towards come August ,where are these business getting there money and there rent and the big chains won't care . If the Cornish are that concerned get on to mps and demand that all holiday companies give people there money back and close for the summer season
Understandably people are holding on to the possibility of there holiday in August as they hope we may be in a better place by then .

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 08:23

But how will their economy cope without the holiday pounds?

It won't be good. It will be awful. But there aren't many willing to jeopardise the low infection rate down here.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 08:24

towards come August

End of August and then they can have people part time which will be helpful.

Polar0pposite · 14/05/2020 08:24

They won’t need to beg, international travel is going to be greatly reduced. I suspect it’ll be like looking for a needle in a haystack getting accommodation down here next year. Many locals will holiday at home this year.. We’ll spend the money we would have spent in Cornwall or France in our local Devon area instead -if anything actually opens. There is nothing to spend it on at the moment, not even beach parking.

Chiyo666 · 14/05/2020 08:25

@understandmenow has never said ALL tourists were like that. You clearly can’t read though so must be one of the stupid ones. You won’t be missed!

LycraLovingLass · 14/05/2020 08:25

This thread is a worry, my sons Dad lives in Devon with his partner (she is local, he isn't) we were hoping that my son would be able to see his dad at some point over the summer, he is missing him terribly but given the attitudes here I am really worried about sending him.

If he and his dad go to the supermarket with their northern accents they might get rammeed with trolleys by the sound of it!

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 08:25

Do people really care about a holiday more than protecting people from dying?

Yes, judging by this thread.

And not only do they not care about deaths, they don't care about locals being worried and unhappy.

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 08:25

@Chiyo666 yes because no locals ever behave like that do they
What a stupid thing to say , Cornwall has thousands of tourists and the vast majority behave , you will always get idiots and Cornwall has its share

ARosebyAnotherName · 14/05/2020 08:26

Nowhere will be open. You could reschedule but, in all likelihood, Cornwall and Devon will be very very different places after lockdown ends. The area is so dependent on tourism. A lot of restaurants, cafes, pubs that have closed will never reopen. Afraid that the SW will suffer more than anywhere in the medium-long term.

Polar0pposite · 14/05/2020 08:26

Under all visitors aren’t drunks but we do get a large number of young drinking groups down here on holiday in places. I have a friend who rents out caravans only to families for that very reason. Are posters supposed to ignore that? Families can need to visit hospitals on holiday too, do we ignore that?

Chiyo666 · 14/05/2020 08:28

The point is we don’t need the extra drunk and stupid currently as we have limited resources to deal with our own.
I’m going to miss my holiday too, but suck it up buttercup it’s not the end of the world is it. I want to be able to take my kids to the beach this summer with out it being unnecessarily packed with people who don’t need to be there.

Polar0pposite · 14/05/2020 08:29

Lycra the Qs for supermarkets and no children advice means your son wouldn’t be in the supermarket. The social distancing measures mean you don’t hear anybody chatting so no need for the trolley pushing drama.Hmm

Easilyanxious · 14/05/2020 08:29

@Teddy but they should be giving there money back if they can't go
That is also morally wrong to say in one hand we don't want you , your not welcome but we won't be refunding you either ? You can't have it both ways
Refund people then the defiantly won't come and close down the holiday parks and accommodation

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 08:29

Ha ha

Cornwall is full of groups of pissed up tourists in the summer, usually kids, puking in people's front gardens.

Have you been to Cornwall in the summer? If you have you will know how narrow the streets are in small towns and how impossible social distancing will be.

Madness to think it will all be fine in 6 weeks!

TimeWastingButFun · 14/05/2020 08:30

I was wondering this. Except later - Italy holiday went for a burton so was wondering about booking a cottage in Cornwall in late August before they get booked up. Bit of a gamble though as it may still not be possible to travel.

Amatteroftime · 14/05/2020 08:35

Everyone saying they will never go to Devon and Cornwall again - I don't believe that for a second. The parks will be full at the first 'say for a week for the price of four nights' offer.

Gwynfluff · 14/05/2020 08:35

@ Lucindainthesky

we haven’t had our peak yet

It definitely peaked in the UK around the Easter weekend. Very clear on graphs, hospital numbers etc. SW like many less densely populated areas has come out of it relatively well.

That said, until things are definitely open for business and non-essential travel and staying away from home are completely ok’d, I wouldn’t go.

understandmenow · 14/05/2020 08:36

No @Easilyanxious if people form Cornwall or Devon ever go on holiday, which I presume they do @Chiyo666? They don't drink, are never stupid, don't fill up the beaches, they're the perfect holidaymakers, they just stay in their accommodation and you'd never know they were there!
