To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

OP posts:

Well, it seems the OP is having some trouble with her 'farmers' anyway so I'd suggest a trip for some Anusol and a rubber ring for her arse.

MargotB7 · 13/05/2020 09:03

Well the little bit of freedom we have been given will be taken away again soon if everyone rushes off to the beaches and parks for a picnic.

YinMnBlue · 13/05/2020 09:09

YANBU, bollocks to the locals quite frankly

This does seem to be the Gvt message. “Bollocks to everyone in A low death area, you are not playing your part in the Herd Immunity omnishambles so we are sending in Day Trippers from the cities as biological warfare”

ToelessPobble · 13/05/2020 09:15

It seems those saying go think it is like any other area of beach with a nice long sea front. Those who are saying don't seem to mainly be the people who know Whitby and how narrow the streets are and that they are not wide enough to avoid each other. People aren't being selfish, they want to be safe. I think most people would be upset if people from an hour's drive plus all drove to their local park. It is the equivalent as Whitby really is a small place. The draw has never been the size, it is the uniqueness and beauty. Yes they possibly can't legally ban people, however we can show a little kindness and common sense and accept that maybe we don't get to do every single thing we might usually or want to. It's hard however start a bucket list, start saving if you can, and have the best year ever next year.

Chillipeanuts · 13/05/2020 09:17

I’d hang on. Whitby will still be there when this is all under control. Priorities.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:20

It’s an absolutely stunning day so I expect people will go to beaches.

I live on one (Cornwall) and fully expect plenty of people who live inland to visit our beach today. And who can blame them.

They won’t find a toilet and the village shop is only serving people who live in a 3 mile radius, but at least the beach is here for everyone to enjoy.

SudokuBook · 13/05/2020 09:24

the village shop is only serving people who live in a 3 mile radius,

Do you live in Royston Vasey

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:25

What’s that @SudokuBook?

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:27

I don’t know what Royston Vasey is.

The shop is ensuring sufficient supply for the many people who live here who cannot travel to supermarkets because the community bus isn’t running at the moment. Many don’t drive, mostly elderly. So it makes sense.

usernotknown · 13/05/2020 09:29

How does the village shop know?

Clymene · 13/05/2020 09:30

Do you really think that shops don't know who their regulars are? Confused

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:31

* How does the village shop know?*

Four ways:

  • recognising people - there are only a few hundred households so generally people know each other
  • postcode - asking if they aren’t sure who someone is
  • delivery address - the shop is delivering to a lot of people
  • the postman - he knows everyone and is in and out of the shop all the time collecting mail.
SudokuBook · 13/05/2020 09:32

Royston Vasey is the very odd village in the League of Gentlemen with a strange couple who run a “local shop for local people”, just reminded me of that.

Chillipeanuts · 13/05/2020 09:33

Lots of people don’t use local shops because they’re much more expensive.
I’d like to but can’t generally afford to pay up to twice as much for very similar produce.
Imagine lots of people are the same: the shop wouldn’t know who they were.

Sorry, being a bit pedantic Grin

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:33

Oh. I’m not sure it’s like that at all. But I have never read League of Gentlemen so I don’t know!

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:34

Our local shop isn’t more expensive @Chillipeanuts. It’s cheaper if anything. It’s mostly local produce after all.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/05/2020 09:36

Public toilets in my seaside town and all along the coast here, have been open for the duration.

Chillipeanuts · 13/05/2020 09:37

OrangeSamphire

You’re very lucky.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 09:38

Yes, they are super. And have been working so hard during the lockdown to keep the community in supplies of everything needed.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/05/2020 09:40

'Those who are saying don't seem to mainly be the people who know Whitby and how narrow the streets are and that they are not wide enough to avoid each other.'

Utter bollocks, the people saying Whitby is all narrow streets are the ones who have clearly never been outside the old town area - which is not how you get to the beach!

usernotknown · 13/05/2020 09:42

So what happens in the local shop if a non local goes in?

usernotknown · 13/05/2020 09:43

The way to Whitby beach is not down a narrow street.

Thymelord · 13/05/2020 09:49

People who are lucky enough to live in nice places shouldn't be so selfish

There are some downright idiotic comments on this thread but that ^^ is up there with the worst. It might be impossible for some of you to grasp but the vast majority of people who live in 'tourist destinations' just happened to be born there. No luck involved.

A second peak is inevitable if the attitudes of posters on here are anything to go by. I'm "allowed" so I shall and FUCK the results.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/05/2020 09:56

@YinMnBlue - Exactly - and it worries me a lot that here in the SW we probably have the highest proportion of elderly people too.

OrangeSamphire · 13/05/2020 10:01

So what happens in the local shop if a non local goes in?

I’ve only witnessed it happening a few times. And each time the person was politely directed to one of the four supermarkets that are within reach by car.
