To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

You are allowed to drive there go!

ChristmasCarcass · 12/05/2020 22:23

You and half of the north east will be heading to Whitby over the next week. It will be hellish, and yes I am quite sure locals will be pissed off, in a way that they won't be in a couple of weeks' time.

I would love to go to Broadstairs (similar distance for us), but we're leaving it until June when hopefully the mad rush will have died down a bit.

Frustratedsenmummy · 12/05/2020 22:23

@Jungfraujoch you live where I live! Absolutely amazed on what planet that was deemed a good idea. Neighbouring council are keeping everything closed which will just add to ours.

FreakStar · 12/05/2020 22:23

Not the point of the thread I know, but how does anyone think Whitby doesn't have a great beach- of course it does! It has a 3 mile long beach that stretches between Whitby and the next resort Sandsend! And Hadleys have the best fish and chips in town!

There would be no problem finding space to social distance on a beach that size!

You could pee in the sea if you were desperate!

Saying that though, I wouldn't go because I don't think that it's necessary right now! And it's still too cold for me to get my bottom in the sea!

SnoozyLou · 12/05/2020 22:24

As someone who lives in a seaside town and hasn’t been to a beach in months, I think this latest announcement is utter, utter bollocks. It just takes the absolute piss out of people who’ve gone by the rules and not seen their family for months. As for you can’t see 2 people from the same household, but it’s perfectly ok to go to work crossing paths, indoors, with multiple individuals from all different households? Let alone the schools.

3 weeks and it will all be tightened back up again. Flattening the curve, my arse.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 12/05/2020 22:25

You are allowed to drive there go!

Darwinism in action.

Spamellahamella · 12/05/2020 22:28

Don't go where you are not wanted, and more to the point don't put yourself at risk. If you have to stop for petrol, or food or the toilet it all comes with risks.

CoronaIsComing · 12/05/2020 22:29

YABU and think about whether it will be safe for you as well as the “local riff raff” 🤨.

We live in a sea side town on the opposite side of the country and the prom has been becoming busier and busier. The last time we went down it was about 2 weeks ago and it was busier than it usually would be on a normal day and some were cycling fast, some walking, some wandering, some taking pictures of their family, some sitting on benches, some with dogs on long leads, some children racing around on scooters. It was really stressful as you just spent the whole time dodging people!

There was already people standing at opposite sides of the prom chatting so that they were 2m apart but everyone else had to go through the middle of them. This will get worse now that people are allowed to meet another person.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/05/2020 22:31

The government should have brought in guidelines for tourist areas.........but there isn't a Braincell between our current shambles so they didn't 💁🏻‍♀️

You would be unreasonable to go, it isn't fair on the people who live there. Not everyone will own a car and that will mean those people aren't as able to access their local area.

motherofawhirlwind · 12/05/2020 22:32

Please don't. My family live there.

justone I agree with you, but what about the Lidl and Sainsbury's? Wink

Lionsleepstonight · 12/05/2020 22:32

I'll tell you what Whitby doesn't have and thats a hospital with ICU beds, so locals aren't being selfish and wanting the beach to themselves, they just dont want hoards of people, some of whom will be carrying Covid into their small town. Hospitalization for a local will mean a 30 to 40 mile trip to the nearest one at least. These small insular towns have very low infection rates and would prefer it remains that way.

GabsAlot · 12/05/2020 22:36

there was a question to boris about going to the lake district-of course he didnt answer just waffled about you can go and getg exercise these places wil be rammed come the weekend

Lovemusic33 · 12/05/2020 22:43

Local council’s are taking matters into their own hands in the SW and have decided to keep many beach car parks closed, so might be worth checking before you travel anywhere. Also public toilets will be closed.

Mittens030869 · 12/05/2020 22:44

@Lionsleepstonight I'm sorry to hear that it's still like that in Whitby, though I'm not surprised; it was like that for my F back in 1998; he had to be taken to Scarborough, where he died.

I'm very sad that so many people don't understand that it isn't about locals selfishly wanting to keep the beaches for themselves.

MamaKarmaLlama · 12/05/2020 22:49

Going to be the same here in the Lake District, lots of twats turning up thinking it’s okay, when we have one of the highest recorded rates of covid19 outside of London....

JuniperSling · 12/05/2020 22:53

I can't believe somebody thinks they'll be able to use the supermarket toilets! Really? You think you'll just be able to waltz straight in without queueing? Good luck with that Grin

user1471462428 · 12/05/2020 22:54

Scarborough have a really tiny icu (I think it would normally have 6 bed) so you would be transferred to YORK or Middlesbrough. Over an hour to either. Poor Whitby citizens must be shitting themselves especially given how old most of them are.

StartingGrid · 12/05/2020 22:56

Depends if you want stones thrown at you and your tyres slashed really!

Mittens030869 · 12/05/2020 23:02

@user1471462428 Oh dear, that's got worse since 1998. It wasn't a nice place at the Scarborough ICU, but it had what was needed. I'm not surprised, though, sadly. Sad

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 12/05/2020 23:05

@VickyEadieofthigh Totally agree. Small seaside village near me has a LOT of second homers. One couple, ONE COUPLE decided to come up from London to 'escape' before official lockdown. Within 36 hours they were in hospital, and they'd infected over thirty people in the village, by going to the shop, filling up the car, buying fish & chips, stocking up on logs for the woodburner, etc. Villagers are understandably not too happy that people are posting about 'needing' a trip to the seaside at the moment...

OP, if you can't see the danger, you will become it.

oneforsorrow29 · 12/05/2020 23:10

@JuniperSling a close relative of mine works at a major supermarket and yes they are letting people jump the queue to use the toilet then come back out again. Not sure if they'd have to rejoin the back of the queue or if they can just pop back in where they were but given the long waiting times it would be wrong to stop people using the loo...

nannieann · 12/05/2020 23:12

Legal but not sensible. Boris asked people to apply common sense.

Ontheboardwalk · 12/05/2020 23:14

If you need a wee at the supermarket I’m assuming you have to join the big queue outside and can’t just push in to get up the escalator like in my Tesco’s to have a wee

That’s a long time to wait, I couldn’t do it

starfro · 12/05/2020 23:22

Definitely go if you're just planning on staying outdoors. Risk of virus transfer in the open air is tiny, which is why the Government are encouraging this sort of non-risky behaviour, whilst stopping riskier activities that do actually spread the virus.

They did a study in China looking at the source of 7,000 infected people. 6,999 had caught it indoors. The single person that caught it outdoors had a very long conversation with an infected person spluttering all over them.

The lack of understanding on this site is mind-boggling.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 12/05/2020 23:24

YANBU, bollocks to the locals quite frankly.
