To cut my own hair?

My hairdresser frowns upon this but in honestly I'm not going to be able to go the hairdressers until July, maybe longer.

If I cut it now how would she notice in two months and would she even care?

It's long. I could just about manage a hack trim jobbie.

It's getting hard to comb and wash without knotting

I trimmed mine a couple of times - just the fringe. I couldn’t see otherwise. She won’t mind - if highlights her skill 😂

SharonasCorona · 11/05/2020 21:28

Yes, I was just looking at hairdressing scissors on eBay too.

Would it be really bad to use normal scissors?

lanthanum · 11/05/2020 21:29

She's hardly going to say "no, I won't cut your hair because I can see you've tried to do it yourself". I would think that hairdressers are more worried that if people have successfully dyed their roots at home, they might decide they'll carry on doing that (or similarly if they've opted to try out the grey look during lockdown). My fringe is growing out at the moment - if I decide I prefer it once it's fully grown out, that will probably halve my hairdresser visits.

Minesacider · 11/05/2020 21:34

The most she's likely to do is roll her eyes a bit. Do what you like, it's your hair, not hers, and I doubt a small trim will cause her any extra work, not like, as above, a home dye job might.

Legoandloldolls · 11/05/2020 21:37

I have already coloured it Grin ok I'm going to have a hack at it now

I’ve been dying to know why people are cutting their hair? I can understand fringes but why hair?
I maybe get a haircut 2-3 times a year. What am I missing where people can’t go a couple of months without a haircut?

Biscuitbiscuits · 11/05/2020 21:43

Several of us have!

I cut my own hair http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/3899795-I-cut-my-own-hair

Meggie2008 · 11/05/2020 21:50

I've done my fringe but that's all that needs done, the rest of it will survive!

SharonasCorona · 11/05/2020 21:52

@Nochangeplease I usually cut my hair 2/3 times a year too but last cut it in Sep so I'm dealing with woolly, split-ended hair. Living in a hard water area exacerbates the issue. Washing and combing hair is a chore.

hootatoot · 11/05/2020 21:53

I did mine with the clippers. I have short hair though and was starting to look like a Lego man with a helmet of hair!! Thought if it went wrong I'd just do a Britney and whip it all off...it's not like I'm going anywhere! It turned out not too badSmile

Legoandloldolls · 11/05/2020 21:56

@Nochangeplease I have long hair that has been bleached so it's a split frizzy mess.

But at least no roots to worry about as I had my highlights faded into a balyage ( or however you spell it!) Last year. Win win

Legoandloldolls · 11/05/2020 21:58

@hootatoot right now would the best time to experiment with a number 1. If you didnt like if you have a while left to grow it out.

Take really small amounts off at a time just in case Wink

kateybeth79 · 11/05/2020 22:09

*@SharonasCorona Normal scissors will snag and split the end of your hair. It's also easier to get a straight, clean line with hairdressing scissors

Legoandloldolls · 11/05/2020 22:10

I have just watched the video. If I only cut a cm off what can go wrong 😂 right I'm.off to wash my hair.....

I've cut about two inches off mine. It's thick and wavy and my head was getting very hot. No-one appears to have noticed yet, so I must have done a reasonable job. I'm pretty sure there's some dodgy bits at the back, though.

SharonasCorona · 11/05/2020 22:20

Thanks @kateybeth79. I'll order some.

ProtectAll · 11/05/2020 22:28

My hair could do with a decent cut as it is 3 months since it was last done and it grows fast, fortunately i now have a long bob so I just tie it up, previously I have had really short hair and anything over 5 weeks and I looked unkempt.
My hair is very fine but I have loads of it. My plan is that as long as the comb goes through it Then I will hold off with the scissors, but as realistically it will be August before I can get a trim I may son be on Mamzon ordering scissors and then persuading my DD to get handy with a trim.

I have already coloured it as I couldn’t live with the grey and it was really noticeable on my video calls! I am using a semi perm colour as I would like to go back to salon dye later this year without having to have my misadventures stripped out first.

ProtectAll · 11/05/2020 22:29

Any scissor recommendations?

RiftGibbon · 11/05/2020 22:30

Has nobody mentioned the MN haircut yet?Smile

Fairyliz · 11/05/2020 22:45

I usually get mine cut every 5 - 6 weeks and it was 10 weeks since it had been cut at the weekend and it looked a real mess.

So I cut the front and got adult DD to do the back and I’m really pleased with it, think it looks better than when the hairdresser does it.

PickAChew · 11/05/2020 22:50

I cut my fringe, today, but I go 3 months between cuts so often do, anyhow. I may be getting more antsy in June, when I'm next due a cut. I'm wearing it in a ponytail or headband to keep it off my face, most days, anyhow.

DH spent today grumbling about his fringe, which doesn't look so bad. Turned out to be a massive old man eyebrow hair tickling him :o

Legoandloldolls · 11/05/2020 22:58

I did the pony tail under the chin job. Only took 2cm off and had a very feeble go at the layers around my face. Feels so much better now.

I have curly hair so I think it looks fine ( so far!)

You can buy hairdressing scissors in boots/superdrug/wilko.

shinynewapple2020 · 11/05/2020 23:01

I've cut my fringe twice since lockdown - just using kitchen scissors. I've tried to fluff it up a bit so the crooked line isn't so noticeable. I need it off my face though as otherwise I keep touching it to push my hair back.

I've just tied the rest back.

More worryingly is the inch of grey roots and the home dye sitting on my bathroom shelf I need to have a go with ....
