Is anyone else getting all these conspiracy type things popping up on their newsfeeds. Also messages from friends with “Read this before it’s taken down”. A lot of them are doctors saying they’re paid to call deaths as covid-19, or that the virus isn’t real, don’t have the vaccine, Bill Gates is in on it so we can be chipped to control us, the virus really came from an American lab, New World Order etc etc. Sometimes I start half believing them. What does everyone think?

Mostly you just need to suggest something and people fill the gaps themselves based on whatever they want to believe.

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/05/2020 12:22

So what exactly is Bill Gates end game and motivation then?

Is it money? Seems unlikely as he's been the richest man in the world for all but a few years since the early 90s. He's also one of the most notable philanthropists and has donated roughly 35 billion dollars to good causes - hardly the actions of a man obsessed with personal wealth.

Is it world domination? Again, if that was his passion wouldn't it have made much more sense for him to keep control of Microsoft? I'm sure there are many more opportunities for dastardly, super-villain shenanigans by controlling the OS and software that is in every other house and office than trying to advance the use of vaccinations.

It couldn't possibly be that he is trying to use his wealth and influence to address the fact that between 2 and 3 million people die every year, mainly in the developing world, from diseases for which immunisation is available. No, couldn't be that, could it? That would make him a good guy and we can't have that.

So go on FlamingSofa, or anyone else that cares to give it a go. Tell us what he's up to and why.

Ocarinan · 12/05/2020 12:27

Interesting you posted a link to the Corbett report.

www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/09/political-extremists-are-using-youtube-to-monetize-their-toxic-ideas/

With over 1.6 million views, the video is categorized as “News and Politics.” It was created by a channel called the Corbett Report, which also boasts documentaries touting conspiracy theories, including that 9/11 was staged by the US government and that global warming is a hoax. Watching the video quickly leads users down a rabbit hole of “recommended videos” that detail Illuminati conspiracy theories and blame Israel for 9/11.

If anyone has an agenda it's @FlameIngSofa, and I doubt it's to make us aware of dodgy furniture.

Mimishimi · 12/05/2020 12:28

Viruses can certainly be engineered.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 12:30

?? Nicely batted away.

But it doesn't change how your half arsed Bill Gates suspicion reduces your credibility.

As does the rather emotive distraction re fire retardant fabrics.

If you want people to believe you you need to be factual. Not full of vague hints and maybes.

2/10 could do much better

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 12:32

Yes @mimi. I think we all know that!

Or was that supposed to carry deeper meaning?

SidSparrow · 12/05/2020 12:39

I think it's astounding that people believe the media is giving them the full picture!

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's called keeping an open mind. It's about reading the news and seeing what else is out there and making your own conclusions. i.e. think for yourself, don't be a donkey and believe everything you see and read, that goes for everything.

A lot of what is reported as 'conspiracy' is based on fact and a lot of those facts can be found on the internet and elsewhere by looking for them.

And lastly, have a bit of respect. Some people have different ideas, different theories, different opinions, and there's nothing wrong with that. Do you really want to live in a world where we all think the same?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 12:48

OK Sid, if you say so.

Love the comment about respect Grin What are we supposed to do to be seen to show enough of it?

bluemoon77 · 12/05/2020 12:49

My friend on Facebook reckons we’re heading for a “Hunger Games” type world. Once we’re a cashless society, our access to food will be controlled as well. Shock

OP posts:
Kljnmw3459 · 12/05/2020 12:49

You can find anything online to confirm your bias.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 12:52

Ooh! Which zone do you wanna be in?

Weird. Even though I was avoiding cashless, I don't have loyalty cards either as I know they reduce the variety of offers you get as an individual as well as in store, even I wouldn't go that far.

Then again, maybe being chipped isn't as bad as we think ConfusedHalo

Kljnmw3459 · 12/05/2020 13:04

This whole getting chipped thing is the same stuff that was going around in some circles in the 90s with the euro currency talks....there were talks of having to get the mark of the beast and so on. I think humans love a good conspiracy and still believe in good v evil and their eternal battle...

Fluffybutter · 12/05/2020 13:05

I honestly don’t see how a man who helped practically eradicate Polio from 3rd world countries can be seen as a bad ,selfish person

Fluffybutter · 12/05/2020 13:05

@Kljnmw3459 don’t forget the barcode thing that was going around for a while too ..

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 13:06

Aye! Early pulp sci fi had similar ideas, way back in the 20s and even earlier.

If man can think it, man can make it, as one wonder full writer had it.

Bluegrass · 12/05/2020 13:22

FlameIngSofa Perfectly demonstrating for us that type of conspiracy theorist who crops up on threads like this playing the role of - I’m no conspiracy theorist ... but I’d like you to accept my credibility without having any idea who I am, whilst I now spout off about a topic that I know no one will do any serious research to authenticate..but with a bit of luck you will absorb and start repeating my theoryto other people on the basis that there must be something fishy going on because you read it on the internet...

With these people there is always an attempt to hook you in with something, the conspiracy theory version of a gateway drug, all whilst expressing doubt about conspiracy theories in general.

Then once they have an audience the tone changes to “well, I don’t believe this one myself, but you must admit there is something a little bit funny about [insert popular conspiracy theory, in this case Bill Gates]”. And so it goes on.

It’s like watching grooming take place, you see it happen all over the Internet.

AuntMasha · 12/05/2020 13:42

They usually do that classic gaslighting trick where it’s not they who are gullible and credulous, but in fact it’s you who is the extremist, you are the one who is closed minded, you are the one who has drunk the Koolade, all because you don’t believe some utter bs which usually ends up blaming an ‘other’ whether that be Bill Gates or a Satanic Cabal or successful Jewish business people. Whereas in truth you only have to look back on history to see how this kind of witch-hunting stuff always, always crops up during times of uncertainty because a minority of people can’t cope with the messy and random nature of reality and need a sinister narrative and a scapegoat.

Devlesko · 12/05/2020 13:47

I think it's more dangerous to believe everything you are told tbh.
Plus, you can only conspire against something which is true.
So the fact you think these are conspiracy theories means you believe what you are told is the truth.
Because you don't know what is actually true and what isn't.

JudyGemstone · 12/05/2020 13:48

Agree with SidSparrow

I'm certainly not saying I believe the conspiracies but I'm suspicious enough not to blindly believe the line our govt and media are choosing to feed us either.

But we're all free to disagree and there's no need to name-call.

Oh and I believe the word is 'sheeple' not sheepie. It rhymes with 'people' see 🙃

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 13:49

Spray that one past me again....

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 13:51

Nope. None of those sentences are actually connected, though I am guessing they are supposed to lead on from the one before in an ipso facto, QED manner.

But the logic fails are too big!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 13:54

Judy... who name called?

I said I might be seen as sheepie, I used a term OP had used, may have been incorrectly spelt but I wasn't rude enough to make that assumption. That may have been the exact term she has seen and quotes!

Seems to me you are only seeing rudeness when a poster has disagreed with you!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/05/2020 13:56

Oh, and that's one of those big logic fails.

Not believing in conspiracy theories does not mean believing everything a newspaper or politician broadcasts.

Sew what I mean? That's a weird and unsupportable leap of logic!

AuntMasha · 12/05/2020 14:02

Not believing in some illogical theory which has absolutely no basis in fact doesn’t necessarily mean you therefore believe everything you’re told.

Lonelycrab · 12/05/2020 14:05

Completely with you op. People just want to believe this stuff because it’s all a bit spooky and exciting.

Also gives believers a (false) sense of understanding and enlightenment.

Reality is a lot less interesting and less self satisfying. Humans treat planet and nature like shit, planet and nature bites back.
