To make the observation that "noone" is not a word

AvalancheKit · 11/05/2020 12:18

It is just that I see "noone" used frequently on here. The correct term is "no one" - two separate words.

Not being a pedant, just trying to be helpful. Smile

OP posts:
KrakowDawn · 11/05/2020 12:21

Isn't it no-one?

Sparklesocks · 11/05/2020 12:22

Does it matter really though, in the big scheme of things I mean?

Jeezoh · 11/05/2020 12:22

How is that helpful? I would guess most people know what is meant by it.

WhateverHappenedToMe · 11/05/2020 12:24

Either no one or no-one is correct. (Peter) Noone is the former lead singer of Herman's Hermits.

PineappleDanish · 11/05/2020 12:25

Alot isn't a word either.

DateandTime · 11/05/2020 12:25

Ahh. I'm always unsure if it should have a space or a hyphen. Now I know Smile

WhateverHappenedToMe · 11/05/2020 12:26

Both no one and no-one are correct. (Peter) Noone was the lead singer of Herman's Hermits.

RiftGibbon · 11/05/2020 12:27

Aswell is also not a word. I don't understand why people don't understand.

KrakowDawn · 11/05/2020 12:28

I see no-one is British English.

Ahem- there is a Pedants Corner for this type of thing you know, OP...

AppropriateAdult · 11/05/2020 12:29

See also ‘alright’.

KrakowDawn · 11/05/2020 12:29

Oh riftgibbon, its discusting and rediculous, isn't it? I need some restbite from it all alot of the time.

StripeyLurcher · 11/05/2020 12:31

Alright is a word.

totallyyesno · 11/05/2020 12:34

Noone will be correct in a few years' time. Start using it now and be a trailblazer!

DollyDoneMore · 11/05/2020 12:34

I tell you what isn’t a word, unless you’re French: “non”.

It’s a prefix that basically means “not”. It takes a hyphen. Non-fiction. Non-dairy. Non-negotiable. Non-driver.

It is not the same as “none”, which is a word meaning “not any.” I can do none of my usual hobbies due to the virus.

In my accent, the two words sound different. (Non = nonn, None = nun). I guess this is what makes the constant misuse on Mumsnet seem so odd. It just “sounds” wrong. (“None dairy”??)

If you pronounce the words the same (say, in a Yorkshire accent) it must be easier to mix them up.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Shockers · 11/05/2020 12:34

The Head of English at my last school used to write ‘aswell’.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/05/2020 12:35

What’s the point of these threads? Do you think someone who has spent years spelling something a certain way, possibly due to dyslexia or something, will suddenly go “oh god, thanks so much for this! I’ve identified myself within this category and will immediately change!”

A chat forum is a place to garner all sorts of opinions and have conversations. Naturally you’ll encounter people who can’t spell or don’t use grammar well or have typos or fall foul of autocorrect. It does not mean you’re better than them.

These threads always descend in to something with a real snobbish, competitive tone.

UnaCorda · 11/05/2020 12:38

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes. See Pedants' Corner (currently the fourth thread). Drives me potty.

DaphneFanshaw · 11/05/2020 12:39

It is a word.
You are a noone, (rhymes with loon.)
It’s a medieval slang term for a man who farms hamsters.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/05/2020 12:39

Absolutely, ShirleyPhallus, full of people who 'can't understand why people...'. Pathetic and they show themselves up as being inadequate themselves. Every time.

DollyDoneMore · 11/05/2020 12:45

What’s the point of these threads?

It’s interesting.

DaphneFanshaw · 11/05/2020 12:50
Confused Really ? Come on, it’s not interesting. It’s just a chance for people to feel superior.
DollyDoneMore · 11/05/2020 12:52

I work with language. I find language interesting. Your view may vary.

This.

There goes my Scrabble score.

DollyDoneMore · 11/05/2020 12:59

Only one person has said something like that on this thread, which I agree shows a lack of empathy:
I don't understand why people don't understand.

But discussion of language, Standard English or its variants isn’t by nature prescriptive, snobby or unfair.
