To really not understand why people are OK with cats

Full disclosure, I'm allergic to cats and also very much a dog person but I really don't understand how it's acceptable for cats to go round decimating local wildlife and crapping in gardens.

I've lost count of how many times I've had to pick cat poo off the lawn and my daughter came in yesterday with cat sick all over her feet as a local moggie had vommed on our patio. I'm sick of it. It's a health hazard and you shouldn't have to wear a hazmat suit to go in your own garden.

We have tadpoles outside which are about to froglet and I've just seen a fat cat with its head in the water. I'm fuming, a few of the tadpoles are injured and this is the same cat I had to get off a terrified bird last week.

I'm not remotely sentimental about nature, if a hungry creature kills another then that's how life works. However I cannot understand how people can let these cats out knowing that they're injuring animals for no reason and causing health hazards to other people in their own home.

I couldn't take my dog for a shit in your garden so why can your cat do that in mine? They're not even natural predators as they just trot home to get their whiskers.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

JoeExoticsTiger It’s not a horrid post. It perfectly illustrates the hypocrisy of cat owners.

Cats are their “beloved pet“ but when comes to it’s shit, wandering around all over the place and it’s indiscriminate killing of wildlife ( much of which is under threat) that’s not down to the owner it’s just what cats do.
If your cat goes into someone else’s garden that has a dog. It’s not up to them to look after your pet. That’s your job.

ToftyAC · 12/05/2020 20:50

Wildlife aren’t in danger from my two. They’re fucking hopeless. They spend their days keeping our guinea pigs safe from other cat invaders. Plus they’re extremely fluffy, soft and cute. Plus they like to go for a walk with us around the estate. That’s not to say I don’t like dogs though, I just like cats better because they can take themselves for a crap. Plus I like their attitudes that we are mere hoomans, sent to serve them. They amuse me no end, but I do understand your frustration.

ToftyAC · 12/05/2020 20:52

Plus I would add that in my last house, our frontage was constantly crapped on by dogs whose owners were too frigging lazy to pick their dog’s shit up.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 12/05/2020 20:59

If a cat comes on my garden, I let the dog out. The cats gets away or the dog kills it.

It takes a sick bastard to say this. You deliberately give your dog the opportunity to kill a cat. You need psychiatric help and definitely shouldn’t be allowed to have pets yourself.

Loving all the photos of cats on this thread. Keep them coming.

zonkin · 12/05/2020 21:18

I think it's quite clear to see that there is a clear divide between the cat lovers and cat haters. And the dog lovers and dog haters. I don't think either side will win over the other side.

zonkin · 12/05/2020 21:19

I think the whole lockdown must have got to me because I am actually commenting on the cat vs dog thing. Hmmmm......

CambsAlways · 12/05/2020 21:23

Thankyou Davrod

Pawsandnoses · 12/05/2020 21:24

I love my dog, but he's an asshole, he does mahoosive poops on the patio and he stinks. My cats on the other hand are fluffy balls of naughty loveliness that smell of fabric conditioner because they roll themselves up in my sofa blankets. DSS told me the other day that his t-shirt smelled like the cats 😂. Mine to be fair are all indoor. One is harness trained but will only do her business in a litter tray. I once rescued a cat that had been living outside for a year. Within a few months, she also came home to poop!

My Dad has

LostDesire · 12/05/2020 21:29

@EveryLifeHasASoundtrack it takes a sick bastard to let a cat out to kill birds and other wildlife then.

Just another double standard poster are you hun?

Btw I don't need psychiatric help, it's called seeing both ends of the same stick. You on the other hand, clearly fail to see the point being made or you just choose to pick the bits you read so you can insult people.

Cats kill animals. Dogs kill animals. Get over it.

People also kill animals. I do have pets, guess what? They are fed chicken from a tin. That poor chicken that died to feed my pet. Ohh, that poor fish that died to feed the cats.

Sick bastards all of them. Killing animals to feed other animals.

Lostvoiced · 12/05/2020 21:43

@LostDesire

Cats can't be trained not to kill things, only kept inside. Dogs can. It's not the same even if you pretend it is.

If your dog is found to be killing pets it could be deemed out of control and put down.
I'm sure this wont change your mind as you've dug your heels in, but it's really not the same at all.

Personally I think cats should be indoors anyway, but a cat killing a bird is simply not the same as a dog killing a cat.

Tubs11 · 12/05/2020 21:47

@Kravarza your experience with dogs is my experience with cats lol
I LOVE animals (dog curled upside me) and I get on with cats owned by friends. It's the ones that wander into the garden/house that are the issue.

sunflowery · 12/05/2020 21:53

I had cats when I lived with my parents and liked them. They are sassy and nice to pet, especially fluffy ones.

But then I did my back garden up last year and can’t sit in the little cobbled seating area I made because next doors cat has decided it’s a toilet. I think it’s got some sort of bum disease because it stinks to high heaven and looks like there are bits of organ in it. Cleaning it up so I can breathe in my own garden makes me wretch and I can’t wait for it to die. Sorrynotsorry.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 12/05/2020 21:56

LostDesire

Yes, I was right first time, please seek psychiatric help.

JudyCoolibar · 12/05/2020 21:59

Yeah pretty much I dont see any fox poo or bird poo in my garden

You may not see bird poo, but unless you have a canopy over your garden there is an absolute guarantee that there is plenty there.

Leflic · 12/05/2020 22:05

How dare you say a dog should be put down because a cat entered its home space.
Either your cat is a pet in which case be responsible or it’s a wild animal in which case it takes it’s chances if it goes out.
Why are cats the only acceptable creature to have a killing instinct ? It’s even worse with cats as they kill the most vulnerable creatures in nature. And it’s not even for food it’s fir the fun of it.
I think the one that needs psychiatric help is the person divorced from reality.Too many kitty memes on Facebook probably.

LostDesire · 12/05/2020 22:07

@Lostvoiced How can a cat not be trained? Have you tried? I've seen cats do flips on demand.

You say a cat killing a bird or any other wildlife is not the same as a dog killing but how so? Is a life not a life to you then?

My dog can kill animals on my garden. Outside however he would need to wear a muzzle. And does.

Also cats have caused a lot of damage to other pets, including other cats but also outdoor caged pets. Even gone in a open door and attacked pets inside. Cats have taken dogs eyes out for no reason before too.

Farmers use dogs to kill also, are you disagreeing with them too?

This whole thing is silly because no matter how you, or any one tries to dress it up. Animals do and always will kill eachother.

Most people eat them. As I said before in other parts of the world they eat cats.

It clearly upsets you, to hear of a cat dying but fact is they get killed all the time in this world. It does not make me sick to say it how itis.

Alez · 12/05/2020 22:08

I like cats but there's been research showing that they do have a significan impact on birds. We put a bell on ours to stop that. I think everyone should tbh.

LostDesire · 12/05/2020 22:10

@EveryLifeHasASoundtrack I'm glad I have not lived a sheltered life, like you. Smile

Enjoy your bliss.

Lostvoiced · 12/05/2020 22:11

@LostDesire

You dont think all life is the same and it's silly to pretend you do.
Otherwise please hand yourself in to the police station next time you tread on a snail.

I think it's irresponsible to knowingly allow your dog to kill peoples pets.

I'm not upset, thanks. Concerned for your dog and your neighbour's cats, but not upset.

I'm not trying to change your mind, because clearly that wont happen, just trying to point out why nobody is agreeing with you.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/05/2020 22:14

We put a bell on ours to stop that. I think everyone should tbh.

My cat wore a collar for years but I’d never put another one in him after seeing some of the horrific injuries cats have had from collars

Lostvoiced · 12/05/2020 22:16

@Leflic

If that's directed at me I didn't say her dog should be put down. I'm saying it could be if it killed a pet and a person complained about it. That's just what could happen. Hmm

FourPlasticRings · 12/05/2020 22:20

I like cats but there's been research showing that they do have a significan impact on birds

Not according to the RSPB- link upthread

We put a bell on ours to stop that.

Tried it. Didn't work. Cat moves too slowly when going in for the kill to ring it. My last cat also tended to go for fledglings hopping around the garden so they couldn't really do anything even if they heard the cat coming. I used to keep an eye on her and intervene when she spotted one, carrying her back inside. She wasn't a climber though so rarely strayed off our garden.

LostDesire · 12/05/2020 22:29

@Lostvoiced I do think of life as all the same. I eat meat, why would I object to a animal dying?

If I kill a snail, I've killed it. That's that, it's dead.

You may think it's irresponsible to let my dog out to see the cat off. But why don't you say the same to all the cat owners who let their cats out knowing they kill animals?

You also failed to answer my points, but that's ok.

I respect your opinion. However you are right, mine has not changed. Smile

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 12/05/2020 22:30

I'm glad I have not lived a sheltered life, like you.

I really do hope you get the help that you so obviously need. or that you find your way home, back under your your bridge And that your animals find a decent owner. Lockdown has taken its toll on some more than others. Wink

Lostvoiced · 12/05/2020 22:34

@LostDesire
I didn't answer because we're coming at this from two separate angles and I can see we're not going to agree.

I do think everyone should stop their animals killing other animals if they can. As I already said up thread I only have the one cat and she has never been outside.

I dont personally see the logic in the stance of "People shouldn't let their animals kill animals, so I'm going to let my animal kill animals".

Still, I can see we're coming at this from opposing places and I really must get to bed so I'll just say I wish your dog to be slower than cats and the cats to be slower than birds. That way everyone is happy.
