Like a badge of honour. I heard one woman say it to 3 different people in a shop yesterday.

Technically I am a key worker.

Should I be letting everyone know about it?

Oscarwildescat yep.. I have a friend who has "Proud to work for the NHS" plastered over EVERY. SINGLE. BLOODY.THING-she can- she is a part time receptionist in a clap clinic sitting behind a glass screen for the few hours a week she does work.Hmm

PineappleDanish · 12/05/2020 12:48

I saw a car parked in a residential street today with a cardboard label saying "key worker" hanging from the rear view mirror. Like the labels rental companies put on at the airport.

Just why?

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 12/05/2020 12:59

If it was properly printed out then it’s probably required for their work carpark Pineapple.
If it was crudely scrawled in crayon then who knows.

PineappleDanish · 12/05/2020 13:00

Not crudely scrawled. But no logo which would indicate official. Most people who have office parking permits don;t have them hanging from their mirror either.

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 13:04

I was in Morrisons the other day and at the checkouts there are signs saying 'please wait until one of our key workers calls you forward' 'please take a step back whilst a key worker assists you'

It's unbelievably irritating.

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 13:09

Oh and one of our local chemists have printed badges to attach to their lanyard which say in big, bold print 'I'm a key worker!'
I saw one of them leaving the other day and, over the top of their coat, they still had the lanyard on. Brash badge proudly displayed.

I really don't understand the need.

clockworklime · 12/05/2020 15:16

I'm a key worker. I also mend shoes.

wonkyspottyboob · 12/05/2020 16:56

On BBC Look North yesterday the local news included a schmaltzy segment about a young girl of about 7 who was encouraged by her parents to stand on a bridge across a motorway waving a large cardboard / plywood sign to show her solidarity with lorry drivers by saying "Thank you". Call me a miserable old cow, but I cannot imagine anything more misguided and utterly stupid on so many levels. It's all getting too much now.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:02

@ActuallyItsEugene it’s almost becoming twee

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 21:29

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

Isn't it just? I cringe now. Especially when supermarket/pharmacy staff refer to themselves as key workers.
Toe curling.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:32

@ActuallyItsEugene it’s actually making me embarrassed to be a proper key worker 😂 (frontline nhs)

pirateparker · 12/05/2020 21:48

I can not stand ‘frontline’ worker! Makes it sound like you’re in the trenches, and you really aren’t!
Key worker is so cringe but at least not as offensive.

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 22:07

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

You shouldn't be embarrassed at all, what you're doing is incredible!
Don't let a supermarket employee (KEY WORKER!!) take that away from you Grin

Thank you for everything you do! WineThanks

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 22:23

@ActuallyItsEugene thank you Smile

ChasingRainbows19 · 13/05/2020 07:41

Glad it's not just me. There are a lot of people that have helped the country run throughout this and hats off to everyone its what's needed. But I don't really understand the bragging. I guess like some said if you are in a job that's been sneered at you will feel more important!

But yeah the key worker thing so over that. So many times I've seen it on social media. 'my car has broken down I'm a key worker so need it fixing ASAP.' Or 'any good takeaways... I'm a key worker' ( and?)

I suppose NHS frontline as i work in paediatrics on a children's ward, so while not overrun by COVID and quieter in some respects than normal. I've been exposed to covid positive infections but hopefully my amazing Hmm PPE will protect me. I would never put those overlays on Im a KEYWORKER or NHS it's cringey.

I've used my badge twice for nhs early half hour on a Sunday at Aldi but actually found it quieter later on. Turns out a lot of people work for NHS/emergency services. I do wish those working through the care home pandemics got more recognition for their minimum wage jobs. It must be awful right now for them.

@10storeylovesong hope your ok. Please speak to someone. I thought there was a lot of mental health support throughout the NHS. We have calm places to visit in the hospital, access to people/counsellors, online facilities too. If your management aren't great see Occupational health.

If it's having that detrimental affect on your health consult your GP for the sakes of your family. No job is worth considering driving into traffic.

notacooldad · 13/05/2020 08:39

My colleague put up a status on FB saying ' As a hard working mum and key worker......' There was a few rolled eyes in our office. We are not NHS but are still working.

MaybeDoctor · 13/05/2020 08:53

I do quite like the fact that it is shining a light on the roles that are traditionally underpaid and undervalued in society, while the investment bankers, lawyers and management consultants are being told to stay at home and not get in anyone's way. Grin

However, 'frontline'? I really don't think the majority keyworker roles are comparable to being in a geographical space where you are within range of enemy gunfire.

FrankiesKnuckle · 13/05/2020 09:36

Saw a sticker in a car yesterday, in blue it said "I'm an NHS keyworker!"

Quick google and you can pick them up from eBay/amazon etc....

Probably purchased by people whose only connection to the NHS is waiting in the ED for a bellyache.

LaylaPSC83 · 16/05/2020 09:14

I was queuing outside the supermarket yesterday ( for 40 minutes!) and an NHS worker tried to skip the queue. The young woman was wearing her NHS uniform and said 'why are none of you lot clapping?'.The shop worker said ' these people have been patiently waiting for a long time, so you have to wait your turn' . The woman started screaming that she's a key worker and the shop worker said that so is he! So after that undignified tantrum, she had to join the queue. I think all the applause has gone to their heads.

Daffodil101 · 17/05/2020 01:08

Really?

That really happened did it? Somebody rocked up and asked why people weren’t clapping?

An NHS worker?

I don’t believe you.

LaylaPSC83 · 17/05/2020 08:35

It's completely true. It just shows how big headed some workers have got.

Daffodil101 · 17/05/2020 08:38

If it’s true, they don’t sound well.

It’s rather a leap to suggest that some NHS workers have become big headed because of one (frankly bizarre) episode. It’s very very strange behaviour, if true, but obviously I don’t think it is.

LaylaPSC83 · 17/05/2020 08:52

I think she must have been very stressed out from her work, I actually felt really embarrassed for her. I should have let her go in front of me.

Justanotherscumbag · 17/05/2020 09:24

Some people really, really don't like care workers or shop workers getting too big for their boots do they?

Uncomfortable is it for those on big salaries, WFH or furloughed that you're not as important as you thought? And those you've always considered beneath you and there to do your bidding are getting a bit of recognition?

Aren't you all so morally superior to be key workers but never, ever mention it, except on a thread on here which is moaning about key workers saying they're key workers.

And no, I'm not one. I'm furloughed and therefore scum all in a different catagory Grin

EstherEliza · 17/05/2020 09:36

It's completely true. It just shows how big headed some workers have got

What an unpleasant comment. Shit pay, shit conditions, working long hours makes them big headed for wanted to shop quickly and get home? Give your head a wobble.
