To think pcos is a curse

Expat30 · 10/05/2020 01:28

I have been married for 3 years and we have been ttc since the beginning, no luck. Doctors say I have pcos other than that everything is fine and as I have fairly regular cycles and do ovulate they have put me on metformin only, have been taking for 6 months and still no pregnancy.

I also take maca and evening primrose oil.

If you have pcos how long did it take you to conceive? And what supplements/medications helped?

I'm losing hope, maybe my body is just useless and ill never get pregnant.

Watching with interest. Have pcos and been put on metformin 1000mg a day. Pinning all my hopes on it

Expat30 · 10/05/2020 15:40

I have always had regular periods with pcos, how many of you are the same?

I had very irregular periods in my 20s. 4 years ttc conceive. Had my DS after ovarian drilling and clomid at 32. It really sorted out a lot of my pcos symptoms! I sadly had 2 miscarriages (without clomid) and didn’t think I’d have another child. At 38 was diagnosed type 2 diabetic. 3 months after starting metformin and low g.i dieting carefully I was pregnant with DD. Had her at 39. Good luck OP

@scrunchSE18 thank you. This gives me hope. Did you have regular periods whilst on metformin and what was your dose?

I would definitely temp, and use the clearblue ovulation kit - it's a great way to know your fertile window, and temping will tell you if you have ovulated.

I have PCOS , very irregular cycles, unwanted hair growth, insulin resistance, fatigue and weight gain. I came off the pill straight after we got married having been told my ovaries weren't in good shape and I would definitely need assistance. I had gotten down to the low end of healthy BMI in the year or two prior -very very difficult, low carbing and 4 intense gym cardio sessions a week and my symptoms did improve and I fell pregnant after one period. Losing weight with PCOS is very hard and I gained a lot back during pregnancy I also developed gestational diabetes , which I had been told was likely. If you can lose as much body fat as possible, it's the only thing that makes any difference to my symptoms, including Metformin which incidentally I was given to help manage GD

Expat30 · 10/05/2020 19:47

Twenty years since I started TTC. 11 years with my first husband. Divorce followed and a break. Now 5 years with my current husband. I’m now 46. We were considering one last round of IVF with a donor egg when C-19 arrived and shut down everything. I had 7 attempts with my own eggs (first attempt at 29 and then sporadically since) but nothing. Prior to IVF I had IUI with trigger shots and prior to that Clomid and prior to that something beginning with P that I can’t for the life of me remember now.

I have now reluctantly accepted childlessness.

QuestionableMouse · 10/05/2020 20:47

Please be careful with metformin. It's really hard on the kidneys and put my Aunt in ICU a few years ago. Her kidneys failed and she never recovered.

pandarific · 10/05/2020 20:48

Took myo insolitol every day, 4000mg to get ds. Google and you'll see the research, it's well documented to be even better than the prescription metformin.

Definitely worth it op, makes ovulation signals clear and strong, unlike the usual PCOS 'did I even ovulate?'

Also as you have PCOS don't take 'folic acid', take the bio available form, 'folate'.

And if you have some weight to lose 5:2 is great, very achievable!

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/05/2020 20:50

Op, are you over weight?.

pandarific · 10/05/2020 20:56

@my keeps ago and unlike matforminn it's oh and unlike metformin it's harmless.

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/05/2020 21:03

It took me 10 years. I lost weight and maintained it right from the start. Low carb diet. Metformin. Tried clomid and it failed. Then IVF cycles. Then I was given IVF tests which found problems with my thyroid, a clotting disorder, and immune system - once they were fixed I got pregnant on the next cycle with twins but lost 1 fairly early. Going to try number 2 in a bit.

OpheliaBoots · 10/05/2020 21:12

I got pregnant the third month of trying whilst on metformin.
My DD is now 6 and I've lost about 8 stone since having her.
I had an ultrasound due to some mid-cycle bleeding last year (turned out it was the implant not agreeing with me) and the doc said I no longer had any cysts on my ovaries at all. Most if my excess body hair has completely gone too. So weight loss has basically cured my PCOS. I cut out white/processed carbs and sugar, only eat wholegrain and went veggie.
It has not been easy but absolutely worth it.

Expat30 · 10/05/2020 21:20

@GrumpyHoonMain how many mg metformin were you on and how long did you take it for? @Fluffycloudland77 no I'm not overweight

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 10/05/2020 22:15

I was on 1000mg and was on it for roughly 5 years.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 22/05/2020 13:55

Hi @Expat30 I started metformin in 2012 after 5 years of ttc with pcos. Was scanned and had blood tests to confirm, I started it in the late September (only 500mg twice a day) and was pregnant with first by May. Had another metformin baby a year later and then conceived dd without it (she's just turned 3)
My advice would be eat healthily and exercise as much as you can and keep going with the Metformin, I was told that doing this makes the drug work to its full potential. Good luck 🤞

I've PCOS and can go over a year between periods. We've been trying to concieve for five years and even had a course of Clomid last summer which didn't work. We finally got to the top of the list for more treatment in March only for it to be cancelled due to Corona. We were devastated and thought it was never going to happen

I found out at the start of May I've concieved naturally and I think it's all down to how I changed my diet. GP always said that since I'm a size 10 my PCOS and infertility have nothing to do with my diet but I felt so desperate in December and wanted to feel like I was doing something instead of just sitting about waiting I made an appointment with a private dietician she went through how PCOS effects your body and insulin levels and how I can manage that, she went through my normal eating habits and we made minor changes. It was the best £45 I've ever spent.

Ipadannie · 22/05/2020 15:21

I came off the pill the year I got married (1997) and have still never been pregnant. Dh and I adopted our DS 14 years ago. Best thing we've ever done.
