People in the Tesco queue are doing the Macarena and I’m cringing so hard I think I might turn inside out

Just that really, essential shopping trip for us and two elderly shielded neighbours. Standing in the huge queue for Tesco, they’re blasting 90’s and 00’s classics out and people are dancing accordingly. At the end of each song they all cheer and clap. I’m a complete introvert, would rather shut my left tit in a car door than get involved.

Probably being a miserable kill joy but with a killer virus on the loose I don’t feel like flailing your limbs about and cheering me in close proximity to lots of people is the best idea. I want to shop then go home and sit in the bloody garden, not do the fucking time warp. Again.

You should have requested Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, OP.

yellowbrickwhorl · 08/05/2020 15:34

We've had our entire street doing the Macarena and Walking like an Egyptian - and a great long Conga right up and down the middle of the road Grin

rwalker · 08/05/2020 15:35

Rather then risk this I'm going to have to starve next week .
Hilarous when it's someone else sorry .

Sparklingbrook · 08/05/2020 15:37

@OhYouBadBadKitten when it comes on at weddings I go and powder my nose, as I have no coordination. Ditto that one where you all sit on the floor and row a boat-whatever that one's called.
I reappear for the conga though-not that Boris would allow that currently. Grin

ChrisAndJonty · 08/05/2020 15:38

You should have requested the Can Can.

That would have been interesting!

Katinski · 08/05/2020 15:39

Lost the plot completely at the Waitrose/harp comment - whoever made that, i'm putting you on Official Notice - you owe me a large mouthful of red wine. And I've got a LARGE mouth. Oh, and possibly a new PC too.
FAB threadGrin

yellowbrickwhorl · 08/05/2020 15:41

You certainly can do the conga at the moment - but you do need rather a lot of room to spread out and a large number of pissed neighbours Wink

Fred578 · 08/05/2020 15:42

God that sounds awful. I’d shut my right tit in the other car door

Sparklingbrook · 08/05/2020 15:42

But my arms aren't 6 feet long @yellowbrickwhorl and there would be TOUCHING! Shock

Bubblysqueak · 08/05/2020 15:43

Anyone else disappointed that the queue wasn't longer?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 08/05/2020 15:50

At a gig, fine.

In a shopping queue? All sounds a bit 1950s 'wakey wakey campers, and today's enforced jollity will be ....'

When you get to the front, I suggest The Smiths' 'There is a light that never goes out'.

Prettybubblesintheair · 08/05/2020 15:57

Well I’m home now, just dropped my neighbours shopping off now I’m going to sit in the garden with a lemonade and try not to relive the horror.

As I was coming out of the Tesco they were playing “I will survive”....mumsnetter in the queue perhaps?!

To those asking me why it annoyed me...ir didn’t annoy me. I was cringing at the idea of forced fun and the social peer pressure to join in. Not because it annoyed me but because I’m an introvert and the thought of joining in made me break out in a cold sweat. I’m quite socially anxious. I was trying to pull a face that was pleasant but also said” please leave me alone. If you try to encourage me to sing or dance I will either vomit, cry, piss or all three but you enjoy”. But who knows, it might have been cats-bum. It was a weird moment of deciding what was the lesser evil, being one of the only ones not joining in or singing and swaying/dancing (only the classically choreographed dances were danced, the rest were a mixture of swaying and slowly waving arms in the air) with a bunch of strangers. So I did the only sensible thing and tried to hide and share my angst on mumsnet Grin

God no. This makes me even more glad I've got online deliveries.

StealthPolarBear · 08/05/2020 16:07

This thread is brilliant.

My vote would be schools out by Alice Cooper

EricaNernie · 08/05/2020 16:07

i think i would have to go to waitrose instead

MrsMop1964 · 08/05/2020 16:10

Lucky I wasn't in the queue-I'd have requested Agadoo..

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/05/2020 16:10

I would have joined in if pissed but stone cold sober? Noooo

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 08/05/2020 16:12

I wouldn't fit in with that crowd at all. I download films or tv to my iPad, put on my biggest most obvious 'I have headphones on, don't talk to me' headphones and don't make eye contact when I'm in the shopping queues.

There's bugger all chance I'd be joining in with the Macarena

SauvignonBlanche · 08/05/2020 16:14

Glad to hear you survived OP, I’m with @MrsAvocet with
I think I would have gone home without my food rather than put up with that!

I guess as you were shopping for neighbours too you had to be brave?

bananaskinsnomnom · 08/05/2020 16:17

Really tempted now to play Cha Cha Slide full blast out my window next time everyone’s out for a clap Grin

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/05/2020 16:18

OP, I'd be cringing with you.

It makes me think of this, I'd be the cockatoo on the left.

Cityonlockdown · 08/05/2020 16:18

bananaskinsnomnom Yesssss, I love you.

ReinventingMe · 08/05/2020 16:20

I'd have enjoyed it and joined in. If we can find a bit of fun in all this, we will get through it.

Sherlockia · 08/05/2020 16:20

It's not my thing, but I would be happy to just let people get on with things while I kept my awkward head down. Mumsnet is pretty miserable about everything.
