Would you report a neighbour for this?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this and I don't even know if it's allowed to be honest.

Would you report a neighbour for smoking cannabis in their garden?

A couple live next door to us and smoke cannabis everyday. I haven't reported them and I won't but I just wondered, would you?

If yes, why?
If no, why?

I'll begin, I won't because it doesn't really bother me. They don't create any noise, it's only once a day and I'm happy minding my own business. They also happen to be nice people who we get along withSmile

Glad the majority agree. I say this because there has been rumours that someone has reported them. I was shocked to be honest. It was easy for our neighbours to use process of elimination and figure out who it was and I just thought, why? Mind your own damn business! They are yet to receive a knock at their door from anyone so we will see. The way I see it as well, your neighbours watch out for you, take your parcels in when you're not at home. Keep an eye on your house whilst you're on holiday etc. Why would you want to create an atmosphere and bad vibes with your neighbour. Just leave them to it! I'm not a smoker either. Never have smoked to be honest but like I said - it really does not bother me!

We have a neighbour who smokes it a lot and I would report it if anything would get done about it. It absolutely reeks and we can't go in the garden with our son. He does it any random time of day too so it's unavoidable.

florence28 · 07/05/2020 23:14

Sorry I said "glad the majority agree" in my last post! That should say "glad everyone agrees" so far anyway

My waster ex-neighbours used to smoke it constantly in their back garden, usually with their toddler wandering around. The smell was repulsive and I would have reported it in an instant it there was the slightest chance of anything being done about it. But there wasn't. Thankfully they're gone now.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 07/05/2020 23:19

Mine do. They’re a lovely middle aged couple and I don’t begrudge them it!

I feel than we are the more antisocial ones with the racket the kids make!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 07/05/2020 23:20

Mind you, where I used to live the son of the family grew it and I didn’t like that much! Probably because he was also a dick.

The neighbours now only smoke it occasionally.

essexmum777 · 07/05/2020 23:21

How could you report it anyway? its not illegal.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 07/05/2020 23:21

Ps don’t like the smell either but still no

TheRealSlamShady · 07/05/2020 23:22

No from a former stoner loser

UnaCorda · 07/05/2020 23:22

I wouldn't, but I'd be seriously pissed off at having to smell it every day. Ordinary fags are bad enough.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 07/05/2020 23:24

My neighbours do it and I cant open my windows anymore. The smell is disgusting. If I thought it would do anything then yes I'd report.

I tweeted local police for advice actually and they advised I report it but cba for potential repercussions

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 07/05/2020 23:24

People smoking weed in their garden - that stuff smells absolutely VILE and permeats your neighbour's houses too.
Thankfully mine have moved now but having to sit with all your windows shut because of the stench seeping in when they were sat out there wasn't fun.
I didn't report though, but did think they were stinky fuckers I was glad to see the back of Grin

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 07/05/2020 23:26

Also op the smell drifts into nursery when windows open, Idgaf if they accept parcels for me , I domt want to breathe in their scummy joints

HangeCnmea1263 · 07/05/2020 23:30

We've started smoking cannabis in our back garden, maybe it's us?

I used to go for a walk in the evening and smoke it then but since next door threatened to drown my cat ive decided id rathar not put myself out anymore 🤷‍♀️

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 07/05/2020 23:31

I'm not a stoner loser either.

I am :p

How could you report it anyway? its not illegal.

It certainly is. In fact it went from class C to class B a good few years ago.

jackdawdawn · 07/05/2020 23:45

I don't like the 'soft drug' label cannabis has; I don't think it's innocuous; it can be as habit forming as booze, and I think smoking it flat out tends to turn people into apathetic wasters, but they sound fairly harmless.

Unless they're growing and dealing it I wouldn't bother. If they are growing it there is every chance they could burn their (& your) house down, and if they are dealers you will have every scumbag of the day coming and going in your street!

Cultivating cannabis

VenusTiger · 07/05/2020 23:51

I'm confused, when I was younger you did everything to make sure you weren't caught carrying it or smoking it - the class changed yrs ago so why are people less bothered by it now even though they're saying they absolutely can't tolerate the smell of it! Are some of you literally prisoners in your own homes during times when your neighbours are smoking mj? Why are you putting up with it? Do the police do nothing about it because my understanding is, it's illegal. Personal use I understand, but surely if you're caught buying it, both you and the dealer can be arrested no?

VenusTiger · 07/05/2020 23:54

@jackdawdawn indeed! So why would any MUMnetters put up with that going on daily next door? Confused glad I grew out of it.

IamAporcupine · 07/05/2020 23:54

This is interesting - we have a similar issue, but they smoke inside the house which means our house, mainly DHs office, reeks.
I am a very non-confrontational person but DH has threaten them to report them to the police/council/you name it. I have told him they will not do anything but he is stubborn and frustrated.

He did call the police once to ask what the procedure is, and was told that even if it is in their own house they can be charged?

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2020 23:54

Yes but no-one here has been caught buying or selling it.

They're smoking a spliff in their own garden and the police know by the time they get round there (if they can spare anyone which is extremely doubtful) they'll have finished it by then.

They're hardly likely to admit it was them and promise to never do it again are they?

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2020 23:57

He did call the police once to ask what the procedure is, and was told that even if it is in their own house they can be charged?

Only if they let them in.

No judge in the land is going to issue a warrant because someone is having a spliff while watching Coronation Street.

Think about it. It just doesn't happen.

Mikki2019 · 07/05/2020 23:59

Isn’t it now decriminalised for own use anyway

IamAporcupine · 08/05/2020 00:02

@WorraLiberty - totally agree, I am just saying what the Police said. I mean, they were not discouraging him re. reporting them, which I found odd.

TinRoofRusty · 08/05/2020 00:10

NO

MadameMeursault · 08/05/2020 00:12

Yes. I hate the smell. And it’s a class B drug so the police might be interested.
