Should they have kept my parcel?

My sister ordered me a birthday present to be delivered directly to my house, unfortunately she got the house number wrong, so the courier company etc didn't deliver it to the wrong house or do anything wrong; but it means that it was obviously delivered to the wrong house, but with my name at the top. They are only a few doors away, so I knocked early evening last Monday and there was no reply, which is fine- their perogative to answer the door or not. As some people might be nervous to answer at the moment, instead of keep randomly trying I posted a note, just saying really sorry for the inconvenience, I can pick the parcel up whenever is best for you, or if you would prefer feel free to leave it outside my house (I left my phone number and house number). They must have been near the door already as I saw a shadow and heard it being picked up, so I am assuming they have read it. It's been well over a week now and nothing, so it seems that they just aren't planning on returning it. If it was me I might have returned it to the company if I didn't know who it was for, so we waited a bit to see if they had done that- but no. Do I knock again? I don't want to be rude and it was DS' error, but it seems a bit savage to keep a £150 pair of shoes that you know aren't yours, and you know are a neighbours. I guess maybe technically have they done anything wrong? First world problems I know, part of me is trying to let it go, the other part feels annoyed about it. £150 is a big amount to both of us, but she wanted to get something special because of everything going on.

TLDR- parcel incorrectly addressed to neighbour, asked politely for it back no response, would you let it go, or ask again?

I guess would I be unreasonable to keep trying, or should I let it go?

Go and get it!!

AlwaysCheddar · 07/05/2020 13:15

Go back!!!

peperethecat · 07/05/2020 13:16

If you're sure the shoes were delivered to that house then yes, keep trying. They obviously know it was delivered in error and so they should either give you the parcel or tell you what they have done with it.

Lockheart · 07/05/2020 13:17

If you're certain they have it then go and get it. If they're keeping something that's not theirs is there a PCSO you can have a word with? Perhaps try ringing the local police station for advice. They shouldn't be keeping hold of £150 worth of goods that don't belong to them.

LesleysChestnutBob · 07/05/2020 13:18

Go and get it however long it takes or how annoying you make yourself. Cheeky fuckers.

Burpalot · 07/05/2020 13:18

Keep trying! I'd prob threaten to call the police about theft because 'if you haven't got it, it must have been stolen and I want it looking into'. See if they mysteriously find it

HowCowBrownNow · 07/05/2020 13:19

Even if the house number was incorrect the package had your name on so they must be breaking the law.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/05/2020 13:20

Well there is a possibility they are ill and are not leaving the house at all.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 07/05/2020 13:20

Have you had confirmation from the courier company that the parcel was delivered? Couriers are currently leaving items on your door step and ringing the bell. Some of them don't even wait for you to open the door before they've walked away, so unless they've confirmed it was delivered and accepted then you don't know 100% the neighbours have the parcel. Maybe someone stole it off the doorstep. That's what they'll probably say if you ever get hold of them anyway.

SeasonFinale · 07/05/2020 13:23

Maybe it as an elderly person who is shielding and terrified of opening the door. Have you left contact details so they can leave it outside for you

NekoShiro · 07/05/2020 13:23

I would keep knocking, also gst your sister to send you a copy of the invoice with their address on it, any proof of postage you have really, I would knock and leave a note every day, they'll get sick of you eventually and hand it over, if they say they don't have it then you have proof that it was delivered there.

I don't know the legality though, I guess it could be classed as them holding your mail hostaage as the name is yours the numbers just wrong

NekoShiro · 07/05/2020 13:25

Also though I could see you getting told its your sisters fault for not checking the house number with you

PumpkinP · 07/05/2020 13:27

The op left her phone number it says it in the op. Sounds dodgy to me as they could have called/text you. And I’m sure they open the door because they must have brought the parcel inside for people saying they might be too scared to open it Hmm

Sandybval · 07/05/2020 13:28

Yes I did provide my phone number so they could chuck it out of the window if they aren't leaving the house, it's about a 30 second walk so I would pick it up whenever. The only 'proof' is the photo they take, nothing to say it was not taken after that though by someone else, which is why I've been polite with them. I can see it is annoying getting someone else's parcel especially when it is our fault and not theirs; even a text saying to jog on would be better because I feel like I want to keep trying hah. The guy who lives there is a bit intimidating and I'm a wuss which doesn't help.

TheRealSlamShady · 07/05/2020 13:30

OP says she left her details in the note!!

I'd go round and knock again, it they don't answer post another note and do this daily till they reply

PumpkinP · 07/05/2020 13:32

They are opening the door they got the parcel into the house! Unless shoes fit through a letter box Hmm

I agree that you should go round daily. I wouldn’t give up

soloula · 07/05/2020 13:33

So the delivery driver left it outside? I'd be back on to them saying you never received it and let them sort it.

Lipz · 07/05/2020 13:34

Just keep knocking till they answer. They have to be in at some point. They can throw them out the window if they are nervous.

Likethebattle · 07/05/2020 13:34

@SeasonFinale the Op says she left her details. That’s three posts I’ve read today where things are covered in the OP that someone asks later.

One was someone who said I have two children aged 7 and 2 and further on someone says ‘what age are your children, you left that out?’ what are people not reading the op?

Redglitter · 07/05/2020 13:35

I'd go round every day til they handed it over. Why would you even consider giving up

TheGirlWithAPrince · 07/05/2020 13:36

I would go round everyday.
Its your parcel and they know it ... Should have been handed back to the mail guy

Pamsy123 · 07/05/2020 13:39

I'd put another note through their door threatening them with the police if they don't return them Also say that you know that your name is on the parcel therefore it's theft

Shoxfordian · 07/05/2020 13:42

Go and knock again to ask for it
