Should they have kept my parcel?

My sister ordered me a birthday present to be delivered directly to my house, unfortunately she got the house number wrong, so the courier company etc didn't deliver it to the wrong house or do anything wrong; but it means that it was obviously delivered to the wrong house, but with my name at the top. They are only a few doors away, so I knocked early evening last Monday and there was no reply, which is fine- their perogative to answer the door or not. As some people might be nervous to answer at the moment, instead of keep randomly trying I posted a note, just saying really sorry for the inconvenience, I can pick the parcel up whenever is best for you, or if you would prefer feel free to leave it outside my house (I left my phone number and house number). They must have been near the door already as I saw a shadow and heard it being picked up, so I am assuming they have read it. It's been well over a week now and nothing, so it seems that they just aren't planning on returning it. If it was me I might have returned it to the company if I didn't know who it was for, so we waited a bit to see if they had done that- but no. Do I knock again? I don't want to be rude and it was DS' error, but it seems a bit savage to keep a £150 pair of shoes that you know aren't yours, and you know are a neighbours. I guess maybe technically have they done anything wrong? First world problems I know, part of me is trying to let it go, the other part feels annoyed about it. £150 is a big amount to both of us, but she wanted to get something special because of everything going on.

TLDR- parcel incorrectly addressed to neighbour, asked politely for it back no response, would you let it go, or ask again?

I do sound a bit of a creep, but I decided a different tact and waited until I could see someone in the front garden and then popped out and happened to be passing by...I mentioned it nice and breezily, he very sheepishly said erm I don't know will check. Came out a minute or so later with an open package but both shoes in the box, and some mumbling about being a mix up and sorry they're opened. I said thank you I thought it best to leave it at that as I now have them back and hopefully won't have any more parcels going there. DS is over the moon as well which has made my day even more! As possibly pathetic as it sounds, this thread did give me the confidence to go back and pursue it. So thank you all Smile the next hurdle is seeing is I can walk in them comfortably haha!

Oh and about an hour after the courier had left with the rejected parcel, said neighbour called me saying she was informed the parcel had been delivered. I don't know how it works but I'm hoping she also has something that tells her it was returned to sender.

I can't speak for all couriers, but I do know at least one where if it is delivered and signed for but then handed back to the courier, it should get a 'confirmed at depot' scan when the driver takes it back to the depot at the end of his shift.

Well done!

Bingeslayer · 09/05/2020 16:03

It was in your name so they know full well it's not theirs

SunshineCake · 09/05/2020 16:03

I'd be sure not to take parcels for them. You don't want any more issues with them.

Mlou32 · 09/05/2020 16:09

Just keep being polite as you don't want to get their backs up but I'd be going back once in the morning and once late afternoon. Also call the local police for advice, I'm not sure if it would be classed as theft.

Merigoround · 09/05/2020 16:10

I love a happy ending!
You did exactly as I would do in the same circumstances and Im so pleased for you that it worked.

My partner accidentally ordered a pram cover to his old address In a block of flats. He went to collect it - buzzed the door and they answered. He explained why he was there and they cut the call off and didn’t answer when he tried again. Clearly were hoping for something exciting so opened the package and ended up with a sheet of plastic for a specific pram type.

Happy days Smile

@MuddlingMackem thanks. I hope they do. I was just surprised when she called saying she got confirmation it was delivered. I'll see what next week brings. I didn't even ask how much she'sb actually ordered. Maybe I'm brazing myself over nothing.

noriim · 11/05/2020 00:13

Thank goodness you got them back! I would be seething on your behalf forever if you hadn't!

Mnthrowaway20202 · 11/05/2020 00:22

If this happens in the future, it’s worth complaining to the retailer because they can open up an investigation with the courier company. Yes, the address was wrong but chances are the household will cough up the parcel when the courier returns to their house asking them where it is

AntiHop · 11/05/2020 00:34

Good work op.

IntermittentParps · 11/05/2020 10:19

Great! Well done, OP.
