Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

So which is it? Are we shielding the elderly because their age makes them much much more likely to die, or do we say fuck em, let all the old people out whenever they want because anything else is being a nosey ageist shite?

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 16:14

Really?

The shopping basket Stasi is soooo early April. Move on and find something else to be outraged at. No one walking a dog twice a day round your bit?

RainMustFall · 06/05/2020 16:14

Phew OP, what luck that you have chosen an 'ism' which is freely allowed on MN. Had your post been racist or sexist it would have disappeared within the blink of an eye but thankfully you chose to bitch about older people and ageism seems fully accepted on here. Hmm

PS We don't have the highest death rate in Europe, you need to look at the deaths per 100k of population, a country with 10m is incomparable to one with 65m for eg.

lazyarse123 · 06/05/2020 16:15

Just read your post Barbara and you mentioned the risks being minimal. What about the risks to staff? The more customers the higher the risk surely.

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/05/2020 16:15

Are we shielding the elderly because their age makes them much much more likely to die, or do we say fuck em, let all the old people out whenever they want because anything else is being a nosey ageist shite?

Or do we let the over 70’s do their own risk assessment and make their own decisions?

dottiedodah · 06/05/2020 16:16

I have seen many over 70s out and about! Thought you were only allowed to shop one at at a time though ?!

SudokuBook · 06/05/2020 16:16

It is their choice. Not mine, yours or anyone else’s. They don’t require to be “let” out.

"Their age is clearly relevant as over 70s have been advised to shield as they are a higher risk category, for those who seem to have failed to notice that!"
Over 70s arent on the shielding list. They've been told to self isolate and are on the vulnerable list.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/05/2020 16:18

Some of the elderly are saying fuck it and going out. It's completely up to them. I've seen countless elderly walking past my house, totally up to them and none of my business.

TitianaTitsling · 06/05/2020 16:18

pink they could get t-shirts and a clipboard to count items off!

SouthernComforts · 06/05/2020 16:18

Yes I agree Driving, but as I'm being restricted in my own movements, work life, social life and my childs education, partly to prevent the spread of this disease which mostly kills old people, it would be nice if they also stayed the fuck at home and at least meet me halfway in trying to stay alive 🤣

lboogy · 06/05/2020 16:19

I can't believe this is a serious thread. Are you always annoyed at the most minor of things OP?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 06/05/2020 16:20

Oh mind your business OP

YABU

I am tired of the Lockdown "police" out there and on here

shinynewapple2020 · 06/05/2020 16:22

I actually think there is an argument for more frequent smaller shops getting you through the supermarket more quickly.

When I've gone I e tried to get
Provisions for around 10 days. Mostly they don't have all items is planned on and find myself holding the queue up while I dither in the chiller aisle trying to find what I want. Alternatively I have to re-route back around the supermarket. If I knew I was going back in a couple of days I wouldn't worry too much about getting everything and I'd be a lot quicker.

Mammatino · 06/05/2020 16:22

You said “moi”. So you are wrong about everything. I am also judging you and laughing at you for good measure.

ElizaCrouch · 06/05/2020 16:22

I bought beer and cheese the other day. Although the amount of beer I bought took me way over two items. So I expect that's ok 😁

TabbyMumz · 06/05/2020 16:23

This thread is so last week. Clearly lots of people are popping to the shops for just a few items.

Alsohuman · 06/05/2020 16:23

We’re in lockdown to spread demand on the NHS. I wish people would lose the idea that we’re doing it to benefit “the elderly”.

FiveEyes · 06/05/2020 16:24

I think you should chill out a bit OP - make sure you are following the rules and leave everyone to their own business.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 06/05/2020 16:24

Or do we let the over 70’s do their own risk assessment and make their own decisions?

They’ve been told to minimise contact as much as possible, get others to do their shopping wherever possible etc. All the over 70s I know have people doing their shopping, picking up medication for them etc but ALL of them are still finding excuses to pop to the shop.

If they were only endangering themselves, then yes, I’d be in favour of them going out if that’s what they wanted. Sadly they’re not though, they are putting everyone else at an increased risk so I think people have a right to have a problem with them. Even more so when they’re ignoring the 2m rule because they’re just so special.

lovely123 · 06/05/2020 16:24

None of your business what they buy!

TabbyMumz · 06/05/2020 16:25

And yet if you drive to somewhere rural for a walk and a picnic, you should apparently be shot!!

SpicedCamomile · 06/05/2020 16:25

@therona - I am not fronttoback, but you asked where does it say you can go out to buy a newspaper - it says it here:
www.college.police.uk/What-we-do/COVID-19/Documents/What-constitutes-a-reasonable-excuse.pdf
"Buying a small amount of a staple item or necessity (eg,
a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk)."

Drivingdownthe101 · 06/05/2020 16:26

ALL the over 70’s I know are staying at home other than the odd walk, so maybe I just know more responsible over 70’s!
