Customers in supermarket queues buying 2 items

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 14:13

After a week of emptying cupboards reluctantly went out this morning. Standing in Tesco queue, two over 70s ladies behind me. one had given the other a lift. What do you need the driver said, oh just some cheese and a newspaper. They were not switched on by social distancing either despite the clear marks on the pavement.

Now I do think if you are over 70 and determined to get out well on your head be it. But for two items, for christs sake.

AIBU I being unreasonable to think that if you go to a supermarket it is to seriously stock up not for 2 items?

The rampant ageism is nauseating!

Whereas referring to overweight people as “wobbling lardies” is delightful.

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 18:05

Tesco have an 80 item limit for online shops and you can only buy 3 of the same product. I believe there's no limits in-store?

Tavannach · 07/05/2020 18:07

Over 70's with high risk issues are meant to be sheilding.

Over 70s with high risk issues are ADVISED to shield. I quite understand why someone in the clinically extremely vulnerable group might want to get out if they're able to.

Trial by nosey judgementle twit Shock

Whycantibeapuppy · 07/05/2020 18:10

Ah it’s people like you that make me apologise to the cashier when I picked up 3 items in Sainsburys after queuing to get in a pick up a prescription for an elderly friend!

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 07/05/2020 18:13

I agree with you. Its flagrantly flouting advice. 70+ should isolate and just do weekly shop online if Poss. These 2 don't care! But what if they passing on to supermarket worker & family. Its so difficult after all this time! #noendinsight

Soconfusedandlost · 07/05/2020 18:15

@Scrumbleton it's a specific item he likes to thank a volunteer for working 6 weeks of 20 hour weeks in a hot kitchen to help us provide meals to those self isolating. Not something I would do every week, or even advise others to do but a judgement call I made for myself

It's up to them what they buy, where and when.

Willow2017 · 07/05/2020 18:17

What if they cant afford wi-fi or just dont have it?

InAPrettyCabinet · 07/05/2020 18:18

I work in retail. They aren't the only ones.

Vynalbob · 07/05/2020 18:19

You don't have to go for essential items, it can be anything you want as long as the trip is essential. It's not normal. I try not to weaponise my family, I would like to think people essentially put the possibility of spreading the virus & that leading to the death of someone below buying a DM (or other rag). Unless her husband is a six foot mouse they were being selfish. It's literally the opposite of jobsworth as they are thinking of others. I might not have noticed but think OP is correct.

One of my parents has slipped through the net for the shielding letter, they are extremely high risk but without that magic letter, they can't get a delivery. My parents are almost 80.

They're either having to rely on neighbours or one of them needs to go out.

@SudokuBook it’s called retaliation! For weeks I’ve seen nothing on here but comments talking about ‘selfish’ over seventies, old people ought to be locked up for ever and so on and so on - as though from 69 to 70 everyone loses their bloody marbles.

You’ve totally proved my point that it’s not acceptable for any other group of people but insulting older people has gone on forever. In British society, we’ve heard ‘bed blockers’ or even worse ‘coffin dodgers’ for years. There is absolutely no respect for older people who, apparently, no longer have the intelligence to apply judgment or make their own decisions.

There is significant evidence that the obese are particularly at risk and so are BAME people but, hush my mouth, nobody can suggest keeping all of them in lockdown longer than everyone else or talk in judgemental, pursed mouth tones about ‘they should be shielding’ but it’s okay to bash older people.

Rainbowsparkle · 07/05/2020 18:24

I’ve been to multiple shops today trying to get eggs and flour. I couldn’t get them when I did my main shop. I literally couldn’t give a damn what other people buy as long as they aren’t bulk buying!

Willow2017 · 07/05/2020 18:25

And nobody else could be asymptomatic in the whole supermarket its just 'elderly' people...okayyyy.

sophe · 07/05/2020 18:26

Not everyone has a family at home to shop for or a kitchen the size of a football field in which to store selfishly stocked up purchases. Or the money to afford to pay for a big shop. These people making small ESSENTIAL purchases are in and out faster than those hoovering up everything on the shelves and then going through the check out with their greedy carts.

An elderly lady wants some cheese for a couple of slices of cheese on toast and she is in your me me sharp elbowed way.

You should be ashamed of even posting that.

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 18:27

I agree Lincolnfeed- older people (70+) are acceptable to people on here if doing childcare for their offspring.

Nobody would tell an obese or BAME shopper to stay home.

BirdieFriendReturns · 07/05/2020 18:29

Why do Mumsnetters make up their own rules and expect other people to obey them? It’s weird.

Thighmageddon · 07/05/2020 18:29

Headbangers You missed a word out there 'free', 'free childcare'

cyclingmad · 07/05/2020 18:31

Its advise they are not forced to stay at home. They are adults who can make their own decisions and choices

I went in for two items, so what? I needed to things and that's it I'm not going to spend more money than I need to just incase some stranger is quietly judging me.

Mind your own business and get on with your own life.

Willow2017 · 07/05/2020 18:33

Unless her husband is a six foot mouse they were being selfish.

How do you know if she has a husband? Talk about jumping to conclusions!

Lincolnfield · 07/05/2020 18:36

Worth mentioning as well - principle 3 of the Mental Capacity act - ‘no person must be treated as incapable of making a decision because their decision may seem unwise.’ - so I reserve the right to stand in my bikini and wellingtons outside Sainsbury’s swigging from my bottle of vino while I queue to buy some cheese and a newspaper!

Joking aside - I don’t go to any big supermarkets at all. Our local butcher, greengrocers and corner shop are brilliant and no queues at all because only us old ‘uns’ take a rucksack and walk and carry home essentials without needing to stand in queues anywhere.

SudokuBook · 07/05/2020 18:43

I am high BMI and I hate the bashing of the elderly just as much as you, I don’t think the fact that other people are twats means it’s OK for you to refer to me and people like me as “wobbling lardies” @Lincolnfield

McCanne · 07/05/2020 18:45

A lot of elderly people still read a newspaper as their connection to the world.
