Just eat smallprint

ShambalaHambala · 05/05/2020 23:06

I made an order with just eat over a month ago. They took my payment today, 6 weeks later putting me in to my overdraft. I had no idea. It's in their smallprint so I have no leg to stand on complaining. AIBU to think this is a bit shit? I don't understand why it sound take that long. I've had numerous big things I've had to pay for this month so feeling slightly more stressed about it than I usually would...

Do you not keep a tally of your outgoings and deduct them from your bank balance?

stickman12 · 05/05/2020 23:12

Don't most people just obliviously keep check on their bank and hope for the best/accidentally forget about none essential purchases?

That is well annoying! I didn't realise that.

steff13 · 05/05/2020 23:15

It probably depends on how much money you have generally. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, it would be unwise not to track your spending. If you have a cushion, it probably matters less.

ShambalaHambala · 05/05/2020 23:18

I do keep an eye on my accounts but don't check every time I've made a purchase whether it has left my bank or not. I check my balance yes. I had just been paid so knew I had enough money. Then my car died...

When you lay for something, don’t you just act like it’s come out of your bank ?

Booboodisney · 05/05/2020 23:18

*pay

ShambalaHambala · 05/05/2020 23:19

As I said it'd be odd in my eyes to check to see if something had left your account. You just check your balance no? 6 weeks is a long time to take payment...

No. There are too many bills going out of my account and dribs and drabs of money coming in. I could tell you roughly what's in it but not exactly. I'm not rich - far from it, skirting the limit often.

snowybean · 05/05/2020 23:23

I'm with you, OP! I'd expect the money to leave my account within the next day or so, not a month later!

Who mentally keeps check of their purchases? I've only ever known anyone to look at their balance 🤷‍♀️

GreyishDays · 05/05/2020 23:25

I check my bank transactions to see if they’re all legitimate, not to see if all my payments are there. So I look down to see if the ones that are there look ok. I don’t check ‘did xx come out ok’ as I presume they do, within a day or two. I think that’s pretty common as an approach?

browzingss · 05/05/2020 23:25

There was probably an issue with payment at the time as it should have gone through earlier

CatBatCat · 05/05/2020 23:26

They have up to 12 months to take the money apparently as I found out when I complained about a payment made 10 months after purchase.

AJ1425 · 05/05/2020 23:26

Once a payment has been authorised the retailer has six months to collect it from your account. It's a bit harsh because most people just check their balance and assume it means its their money but we all really need to take a bit more responsibility for our own money.

ShambalaHambala · 05/05/2020 23:26

It says in the smallprint that their payments can take up to 90 days

SeaViewBliss · 05/05/2020 23:28

I don’t think it’s that unusual to check all transactions. I do it once a week.

😂

browzingss · 05/05/2020 23:35

The thing is, they would have 6 years to chase you for the debt if they wanted to take you to court. You (accidentally) didn’t pay for their services, they’re allowed to seek payment even if there was an initial error at the time of order

Going forward, possibly contact your bank if this places you in unnecessary hardship. Banks are being a bit more lenient due to covid, they may consider temporary stopping your overdraft interest for example as a goodwill gesture.

Possibly contact just eat and complain, more because it was unexpected during a difficult time and you’d rather they informed you there was an issue with payment initially, or gave you notice they were going to charge your card. They may give you a voucher?

66redballons · 05/05/2020 23:35

I thought this going to be diet thread. Just eat small Grin 🤪

DollyDally · 05/05/2020 23:37

It’s harsh when things are tight but you do need to keep an eye on outgoings. I check my account daily and have a spreadsheet of outgoings now 🥱 but that is after 30 years of putting my head in the sand and messing up financially.

GindependantWoman · 05/05/2020 23:45

If banking apps were up to scratch we wouldn't need separate spreadsheets and such bollocks. I also check my bank almost daily and look at my available balance, pending transactions and completed transactions for anything dodgy but I couldn't possibly keep track of every penny spent everywhere and ensure it has come out of my bank. Do you take the spreadsheets/notebooks with you to Tesco and mark down before you leave??

Ain't. Nobody. Got. Time. For. That.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/05/2020 05:30

I don't understand why anyone spends from their bills account unless they have plenty of spare money so there's no risk of running out, going into overdraft or having to mentally account for all the regular payments due out later in the month. It must be a nightmare to keep up with.

You need to separate your spending money into a different account or put all day to day spending on a credit card so then you can just pay it off in full by direct debit each month and treat it like any other bill.

AgentJohnson · 06/05/2020 06:24

I have an alert on my account, if my balance drops below 100 Euros, I get an update.

How expensive was your food order? The delay is annoying but it was money that you spent and maybe takeaways in your position isn’t the most sensible use of your money.

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 06:28

I check my bank balance most days to make sure everything is at it should be. Pending transactions tend to show immediately and stay there until payment is taken.

Only takes about a minute and I normally do it over breakfast. Not sure why some people think it's so ridiculous to check where your money is going 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fiddlersgreen · 06/05/2020 06:36

The op said that after the takeaway, her car died so clearly when she had the takeaway she could afford it but she’s since had to spend a lot of money on her car and had assumed the takeaway money had long gone from her account.

Like a pp, I check that the transactions on my account are all legit but I don’t check that every purchase has gone out.
Also, my bank doesn’t show pending transactions so not able to check that at all.

modgepodge · 06/05/2020 07:52

As a child, I remember my dad saving all receipts, then every couple of months sitting down and going through them and crossing them off his credit card bill. Presumably checking for things like this?

I have never done such a thing. Like most, I check sporadically for any payments I WASNT expecting, but I don’t check that all the ones I WAS expecting have gone out.

The same thing happened To my husband as a student with a travelodge bill, couple of hundred about 6 months after the event. Unfortunately it’s legal, if very annoying.
