I bought something in store today with best before date as APR 2020. As it's not "use by" but just best before can I take the item back or does it seem foolish?

Bananacloud · 05/05/2020 22:12

Depends, have you got the receipt still?

Zebrasinpyjamas · 05/05/2020 22:14

You probably can. I probably wouldn't actually bother if it was me. What sort of item? Something you would explain to have a long date on it?

MrsEricBana · 05/05/2020 22:15

Definitely but I might not bother under the current circumstances depending on what it is...

Theukisgreatt · 05/05/2020 22:16

What is it?

Peppafrig · 05/05/2020 22:16

If depends what it was. I probably wouldn't take it back it's bad enough going to supermarket once a week .

MaternalNewt · 05/05/2020 22:16

What is the item?

Tinned tuna, I'd use it and forget about it but be aware shipping there.

Something more perishable, I'd return and depending on their response consider not shopping there in future, clearly their food handling / stock process might be a 1 off mistake... Or piss poor...

Carrie7469 · 05/05/2020 22:17

You could but it might not be worth doing. It depends on what it is and how much you paid for it

vixxo · 05/05/2020 22:29

Not worth it if it's a low value and non essential item.

limeandlemonade · 05/05/2020 22:29

Sorry I should have specified... it's biscuits, but I bought 6 packs, maybe my question should have been, is it safe to consume?
Our household is not at all high earners so if we're talking money, yes a few packs of biscuits add up.

BeamerTown · 05/05/2020 22:32

Biscuits will be totally fine, they have a long shelf life. They might be slightly more stale, but they will be safe. If you’re anything like my household, they will be gone in no time!

Boopeedoop · 05/05/2020 22:33

They will be safe to eat. But I don't see a problem with returning them if you would rather.

Theukisgreatt · 05/05/2020 22:33

Yes safe to consume. Don't worry.

Alsohuman · 05/05/2020 22:36

Biscuits will be fine. Just eat them quickly!

Cosyblanky · 05/05/2020 22:37

No problem eating old biscuits. From the use by date they may loose flavour and become stale but shouldn't make you ill. If you are going back to shop anyway get a refund if you don't think they will get eaten for ages, but not worth making special journey.

ECBC · 05/05/2020 22:38

It’s easily done, I’m sure they will be fine as there’s plenty of sugar in them

Cosyblanky · 05/05/2020 22:39

Sorry, meant best before! The clues in the words!

Khione · 05/05/2020 22:40

they'll be fine to eat - and taste perfectly fine unless they have been stored in damp, hot and/or humid conditions.

limeandlemonade · 05/05/2020 22:41

Got it! Thanks all, can finally justify myself eating a whole pack at once.

OP posts:
Evibella · 05/05/2020 22:42

The best before is the end of the month, unless baby milk, at least that’s what it was when I worked in sainsburys

Evibella · 05/05/2020 22:43

Lol just realised it’s actually MAY. 😂 god I’m going crazy not only do I not know days of the week but I don’t know what month it is

limeandlemonade · 05/05/2020 22:58

@Evibella well I had no idea it means end of month, I thought best before APR meant before the START of April. Well that makes me feel a lot better 😂 thank you

OP posts:
spongedog · 05/05/2020 22:58

Fine to eat but I would perhaps let the shop know - send an email with photo and copy of receipt. No need to go social media warrior, but I do think the shops still, despite circumstances, need to manage stock properly.

PawPawNoodle · 05/05/2020 23:13

It isn't illegal to sell food past it's best before date however it's good practice for shops to tell the customer that this is the case (and usually it's offered at a discounted price).

You can try to return them if you want and they will likely take them back as a statutory refund but for the sake of biscuits (that will be perfectly edible!) I wouldn't bother just ram them all in your mouth

lollipoplola · 05/05/2020 23:54

Yeah biscuits will be fine. FWIW were high earners but I would still take something back if I thought it would be bad to eat, hate wasting money. DH on the other hand would bin it and move on
