To wonder what is going to happen with nurseries?!

I haven’t seen any mention of nurseries/early years at all in the news/daily updates and it’s starting to stress me out slightly.

Before anyone says anything, I KNOW lockdown is important. But so is mental health, and I’m honestly at breaking point at the moment. It would be really helpful to just have some inkling of a end point where we can all aim for.

But all talk is about schools etc. Surely early years is just as, if not more important to get the economy back up and running?!

Totally agree with you Trust

I think the will get kids in years 10 & 12 back along with primary and nurseries

The older ones for exams, the younger ones to enable to economy to move. I personally would rather we implement social distancing for adults as we are now to keep the R below 1 that try and do social distancing in schools. It won't work.

The evidence strongly supports that children are not affected nor that they are 'superspreaders'

To protect the adults around them, maybe they should wear masks etc and adults collecting should do so in a socially distanced manner.

God knows why people think September is a magic month when it will all be ok, or that we can keep under lockdown forever. There won't be a country left

Bollss · 06/05/2020 11:32

i agree with everything you have just said @banjaxxed

honestly i dont know why september has been proclaimed the magic month but it definitely has! without a vaccine, it wont be any safer than june or july is!

we need to keep some measures in place like you say, masks and social distancing in public and in work places, but that shouldnt mean that schools dont go back.

bigchris · 06/05/2020 11:39

Wow this thread is so niggly!

hammeringinmyhead · 06/05/2020 11:49

I think intially people said September because they thought that things would be getting back to a kind of normal in July/August so we may as well just start a fresh new school year. Which again is annoying as a nursery parent because my DS is year-round and 6 weeks childcare makes a lot of difference to me!

Bollss · 06/05/2020 11:53

same for me hammering

i still need FT childcare throughout july and august!

getmeoutthehouse · 06/05/2020 11:53

Totally agree @banjaxxed

cologne4711 · 06/05/2020 12:29

The last I saw was the priority was Y6 because of transition to secondary. I still think Y10 and 12 should be first back, or back at same time as Y6.

And yes of course childcare for 0-5s needs to reopen.

VeganVeal · 06/05/2020 13:23

I hope the nurseries open soon, I'm desperate for some plants for my tubs. I know Tesco's do plants but they're not as nice

Italianmoma1983 · 06/05/2020 13:28

Nurseries could be back on Monday - pm said he was going to ease the lockdown as soon as Monday !

Bollss · 06/05/2020 13:34

Yes ease it but I'd be surprised if that's what he's going to announce.

my2bundles · 06/05/2020 15:54

Nurseries won't be back on Monday. If that is one of tbe things being eased, and that's a huge if, Monday gives nurserys no time to prepare for the changes they need to make.

TeddyIsaHe · 06/05/2020 15:59

But Boris wants people to get back to work. He knows that you can’t do that without childcare (especially as grandparents can’t really help out atm).

I wouldn’t be surprised if he announces on Sunday that nurseries can open in a reasonably quick time.

Assuming the staff want to return so early. I knowill teachers unions don't want schools to go back any time soon to protect teaching staff and other staff.

TheGoogleMum · 06/05/2020 16:24

I have to say one upside to lockdown is DD's nursery is open to key workers, which both me and DH are and her constant cold since starting has finally cleared up now there's less kids there. Young kids don't seem to spread the illness much so I reckon nurseries will be back to normal relatively soon

my2bundles · 06/05/2020 16:32

Google mum, if nurseries was just filled with children I could understand that. There are also many teachers, nursery nurses, cooks and cleaners to consider.

TeddyIsaHe · 06/05/2020 16:42

If nurseries are reopened the employees won’t qualify for furlough. So they’ll have to take unpaid leave, which I don’t suspect many will want to do.

I’ll just make this point again: we NEED the majority of the population to get covid to attain herd immunity. That is what protects the people shielding. It just needs to be in a controlled manner so that the NHS isn’t overwhelmed. Lockdown was never about stopping people getting covid. So if people don’t want to go back to work, that’s fine.

That last sentence shouldn’t be there Confused

Just going back a bit in the thread - when the newspapers report "Boris Johnson is looking at 1 June for a return to school for Year 6s" this isn't speculation by the media. It's called a leak, directly and intentionally from Downing Street. So it literally is what the government is planning. The leak is used to gauge public opinion. So josh because you haven't seen it in the briefings doesn't mean it isn't happening. I would put a lot of money on this Sunday's announcement confirming this is what will happen, subject to the R number staying in the safe range in the next three weeks.

my2bundles · 06/05/2020 16:46

How are you so sure that particular detail is a leak?

hammeringinmyhead · 06/05/2020 16:46

My nursery never closed. There is nobody to "go back". They never stopped working!

Bollss · 06/05/2020 16:49

Our nursery never closed either so no changes to make. And if it re opened all the fees would be payable so they wouldn't need to send anyone home on unpaid leave!

Bollss · 06/05/2020 16:50

Re opened to everyone I mean

snowballer · 06/05/2020 16:55

How are you so sure that particular detail is a leak?

How could you think it was anything else? It's how this government operates. Rightly or wrongly.

Also it's actually written in the papers... see guardian screenshots
