To be annoyed by the latest Quorn mince ad?

SerenDippitty · 04/05/2020 11:04

It shows a family with three children enjoying a Quorn spag Bol happy in the knowledge that it’s good for their climate footprint.

Or is it meant to be tongue in cheek?

Eating meat is obviously bad for the planet, nothing to be mad about in this ad...

user1495884620 · 04/05/2020 14:27

Kids are all ginger. The adults aren't. They have clearly been cast to show that there is no genetic relationship and the implication is that the adults have decided to be child-free for environmental reasons but are fostering instead. May be complete bollocks

nevermorelenore · 04/05/2020 14:30

Not pictured - kids picking at food going 'eww this spaghetti tastes weird' followed by a chorus of farts all evening.

Servers · 04/05/2020 14:39

I know this is besides the point, but why on earth anyone would eat Quorn rather than making a nice bol out of veg is unreasonable, the ingredients:

Mycoprotein (92%), Rehydrated Free Range Egg White, Natural Caramelised Sugar, Firming Agents: Calcium Chloride, Calcium Acetate; Gluten Free Barley Malt Extract

To create mycoprotein, manufacturers ferment fungi spores along with glucose and other nutrients. The fermentation process is similar to what’s used to create beer. It results in a doughy mixture with a meat-like texture that’s high in protein and fiber.

Not veggie bashing, it's great to follow a vegetarian diet and there's loads of really nice foods and natural replacements full of fibre and protein in meals for meat, but claiming this crap made in a vat is good for the environment is a joke. It's also classed by some as an allergen, which explains why so many peoples arses explode after eating it.

I do agree there is a certain irony in the advert.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 04/05/2020 14:42

I wonder if Durex ever takes the "Save the planet" approach in their ads
Ha ha. They totally should.

Isitweekendyet · 04/05/2020 14:58

I think the point of the advert is to appeal to 'normal' families to switch a typical meal to quorn mince.

Families will watch and think 'Oh let's make a meal with Quorn it's good for the environment.' Not have an existential crisis over the fact they have had one too many children than the average norm.

You're massively overthinking this... eat Quorn or don't...

Why on earth would anyone buy Quorn?

Fermentation like beer? I like beer.

A doughy mixture? I like bread.

Meat-like texture? I like meat.

High in protein and fibre. Good.

FlamingoAndJohn · 04/05/2020 15:21

Why on earth would anyone buy Quorn?

To make lamb mince they kill a small baby animal, strip the flesh off its bones and force it through a mincing machine.

Doesn’t sound that much better to me.

Servers · 04/05/2020 15:37

I don't eat meat either, but there's so many vegetables with a similar texture to meat rather than that- eurgh.

GreyishDays · 04/05/2020 15:45

I don’t think that makes a brilliant Quorn advert though, Servers they are trying to sell the stuff Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/05/2020 15:47

Would you rather they showed the parents playing Russian Roulette with the kids to reduce their carbon footprint? I don’t get people sometimes.

oldtownroad · 04/05/2020 15:57

Not eating meat or eating some meat free meals is a simple thing you can do though. Not having a child you desperately want is just not something most people are prepared to give up because of the environment.

1555CC · 04/05/2020 16:02

having children is the worst thing you can do for the environment

This is very true.

No it isn't. There are loads of worse things, like setting fire to a mountain of 10000 used car tyres. Or having your own jumbo jet that you just fly around for the hell of it. Or starting a nuclear war.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 16:13

They didnt say where the pasta came from? Probably flown in from Italy, not reducing their carbon footprint.

user1495884620 · 04/05/2020 16:15

Someone who like setting fire to used car tyres or flying around in their personal jumbo jet for the hell of it, isn't likely to be called Ma or Pa Thunberg. They are more likely to be raising children who behave in a similar manner, so having more children is the worst thing they can do for the environment.

They might be doing all those things, but have no children. It's a fact I'm afraid, whilst having kids is not great for the environment, it's not even close to being the worst thing.

user1495884620 · 04/05/2020 16:24

They might be doing all those things, but have no children.

In which case only one person is doing those things. If they have five kids, that's five times as many people doing those things.

Macncheeseballs · 04/05/2020 16:30

Well someone has to give birth to the kid who's going to solve the world's problems, kinda hoping it's one of mine - #smugcunt

safariboot · 04/05/2020 16:32

You're poking holes for no reason.

I'm not a huge fan of Quorn but I'll eat it. And I think it's healthier than a lot of the new "plant based" stuff. Like a PP mentioned, I eat bread and yoghurt and marmite, I drink cider and rum. Quorn's not so different.

InfiniteSheldon · 04/05/2020 16:36

I agree if you care about the planet don't intentionally have 3 dc esp if you're preaching about it.

1555CC · 04/05/2020 16:44

One person, with no kids, setting fire to 10000 tyres, and having their own jumbo jet, and an open cast mine in Namibia, is worse for the environment that a normal family with 2 kids eating Quorn. Hence having kids is not the WORST thing you can do for the environment.

Really it's not complicated.

altiara · 04/05/2020 16:48

Having a Quorn meal now and again isn’t going to reduce the carbon footprint they already have.
So OP are you saying if you have 3 kids, don’t bother trying to reduce your carbon footprint? As your subsequent posts make me think, they should be trying harder!

Lordfrontpaw · 04/05/2020 16:50

I'm annoyed by Quorn full stop. They have stopped making some nice stuff and gone for the 'veganish' and fast food 'I eat a vegan pastie once a week - I'm saving the planet'. Their vegan version of the old veggie stuff tastes weird and coats your mouth. Yuk.

And user1495884620 (people arent 'ginger' horrible expression) whilst all us kids (apart from my bro) have red hair, mum was a natural blonde and dad had black hair. It happens.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 04/05/2020 17:35

It would be great if durex did use the save the planet angle. Too many people having too many kids still. I could understand the 3kids thing 10 years ago.

The climate change protests last year said everything pregnant mums with tie dye baby slings with a 9 month old baby and a toddler by their side.

Loads of these, but let’s focus on the person who flies their own 747 round for fun (who the fuck is this person???) and presumably they aren’t at the moment!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 04/05/2020 17:50

I can already see it!

Serene music and jungle sound background. Oooh what is it? A careful jaguar! A drone flies up and shows vast rainforest.
drone turns up to the skies and when it turns back...
Oh my! Look at that serene white! Where are we? Ah! Polar circle! A family of chubby polar bears is traveling tight under our drone.
drone turns to skies again and when it turns back
We are looking at a couple sleeping and dreaming. Both wake up "I had a dream and it was beautiful!" "Me too!" "I so want this one to come true. Pick up condoms on a way home today"

Sir Attenborough in a background with jungle sounds:
"Save the planet. Wear a condom"
