To be annoyed by the latest Quorn mince ad?

It shows a family with three children enjoying a Quorn spag Bol happy in the knowledge that it’s good for their climate footprint.

Or is it meant to be tongue in cheek?

You clearly think you've spotted something that everyone else is too thick to realise, so you'll have to spell it out to us.

It appears that the family has three children, but we don't know that to be a fact, one could be a friend who's come for tea.

I would hope that if Quorn is marketing based on the fact that it is lower carbon footprint than meat, they have some reliable figures to back that up.

So what's so wrong about their suggestion about 'taking a step in the right direction'?

After all, the solution to climate change is never going to be everyone doing things perfectly, because they simply won't.

So the next best thing is as many people as possible doing the best they can, ie making a few small sustainable swaps that they can live with, rather than a few people doing everything absolutely right and most people doing little or nothing, because it seems too difficult or unpleasant to even try.

Morgan12 · 04/05/2020 11:53

I is to a stupid to know what you are talking about?

Curiosity101 · 04/05/2020 11:54

If the problem is 3 children then I don't see the issue? If everyone had 3 or more children then I agree that it'd be an issue. But there are lots of people who have 0, 1 and 2 children so the average number of births per woman in the UK is less than 2. The reason our population is still growing is that we're living longer.

If the limit for children was 2 then our population would probably shrink too quickly and we'd probably end up in trouble when we didn't have enough people to fill jobs and didn't have enough tax to pay for vital services that support the aging population. I think we're already kind of heading that way as it is and I'm not expecting a state pension in 30+ years when I reach retirement age.

I'm not suggesting that we should be encouraging people to have more than 2 children and I'm not suggesting that reducing the world's population would be a bad thing, but this is an ad about Quorn. Not an ad promoting having more than 2 children.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/05/2020 11:58

It doesn’t say who they are does it? She might have invited a few neighbours in, thus further saving the planet as the neighbours didn’t have to switch their ovens on too (or use their big 4x4 to go to the supermarket to buy the bloody vile stuff).

(PS this is tongue in cheek)

powershowerforanhour · 04/05/2020 12:05

society still considers only children to be some sort of abhorrence so I guess advertisers don't want to portray that sort of family

Interesting...come to think of it, what "family" ads are there with an only child? It's always two or three- can't think of any with one (or four).

ElementalIllusion · 04/05/2020 12:06

Since Quorn is made by a British company I’m fairly certain the ad will be British and dubbed for the Americans.

I personally like the ad.
I say this as someone who generally hates quorn, I think it’s vile, especially the mince (apart from the new vegan sausages, they are quite nice).

I still think it’s a good ad though.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 04/05/2020 12:10

This number always surprises me because on MN it looks like EVERYONE has at least 4 😂 Or none. Nothing really in between.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 04/05/2020 12:10

YABU. Everyone needs to be doing everything in their power to reduce their environmental impact. Is it in your power to eat less meat? Yes. Is it in your power to only have 2 children? Usually but not always. Is it in your power to look at your 3 existing children, say "ooh this isn't very eco friendly" and stuff one of them back up your fanny? No. So stop making out that people with bigger families are terrible hypocrites for trying to make the changes that are actually in their power. We can either accept the fact that every one of us are imperfect creatures just doing our best within our limited abilities, or we can demand absolute moral purity before anyone is allowed to take any action and wait to go extinct.

SerenDippitty · 04/05/2020 12:14

The ironyis that having children is the worst thing you can do for the environment. (that is just a fact not an argument for or against having them). Having a Quorn meal now and again isn’t going to reduce the carbon footprint they already have.

Interesting point about family ads always having more than one child too. Like a family with one child isn’t a proper family.

Oh fuck off.. what a pile of steaming shite .

If you read some of the threads on here by people considering stopping at one you will see that many people believe that! I see some posts where the OP is struggling with multiple children and it turns out they didn't really want more than one but thought it would be cruel not to give their child a sibling. One poster even said once that if they were only able to have one child they would give them up for adoption so they could have a sibling. Genuinely believed being an only child was more traumatic than that.

ElectricTonight · 04/05/2020 12:28
Hmm
Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 04/05/2020 12:35

To be fair to MN almost everyone told her she was crazy for thinking that. However there are plenty of people who post that they think being an only child is a negative thing.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 04/05/2020 13:06

Of course eating quorn instead of meat is going to reduce your carbon footprint. Eating anything almost instead of meat is going to reduce your carbon footprint. It isn't going to reduce it by much if that's literally all you do, but it will reduce it. A family of 3 who are vegetarian have a lower carbon footprint than a family of 3 who eat meat. You can only compare it against a situation with that one variable reversed otherwise you get down a rabbit hole of "well a family of 2 is more eco friendly than 3... but what if they have 2 cars and the family of 3 has only 1? ... What if they don't have any car but they fly 6 times a year etc etc etc". You can't compare every single different possible situation, you can only make changes to your own situation and judge the results against how you were living before. Eating meat free, even just once a week, does reduce your footprint. If everyone made a small change it would add up to a big change.

Thesuzle · 04/05/2020 13:09

FYI American farming methods are the worst.. and agree with Peoplewhoannoyyou. Over population is the root cause.

FlamingoAndJohn · 04/05/2020 13:10

To be fair you are unreasonable if you are in any way surprised by this ad - Quorn adverts always depict smug cunts - it's the market they are trying to appeal to, after all!

So vegetarians are all smug cunts? That’s a lovely attitude to have.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 04/05/2020 13:10

I wonder if Durex ever takes the "Save the planet" approach in their ads🤔😂

ducksback · 04/05/2020 13:17

having children is the worst thing you can do for the environment

This is very true.

Lavenderpurple · 04/05/2020 13:20

If it’s the 3 kids in the advert your getting at, they look a similar age to me. Maybe they’re triplets or there’s twins there. Or maybe it’s one of the kids mates round for dinner?

Brefugee · 04/05/2020 13:20

Having a Quorn meal now and again isn’t going to reduce the carbon footprint they already have.

Of course it is. Or are you one of those people who won't don anything about the catastrophe that is our planet because not everyone is weaving their own clothes from home grown grass and is an ethical vegan?

The thing to get annoyed about with Quorn is surely more about the packaging than their adverts?

TheSandman · 04/05/2020 13:22

I'm kind of annoyed that they don't appear to know how to eat spaghetti. Who spoons it up like that?

Stab, twiddle - and shove it in.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 04/05/2020 14:11

You know this is a fictional family, right? They could be foster kids, or friends or cousins or god knows what. They're not actually real.
And reducing climate footprint isn't a all or nothing deal.
Just because someone once took a flight.at some point in their life, it doesn't suddenly mean they're a hypocrite for putting out their recycling.
Unless you're living in a home-knitted yurt all day, eating nothing but your own home grown lentils, then you'll have made a negative environmental choice somewhere in your life that could have been avoided.
Shaming people when they do try reduce their footprint is not helpful.

DollyDoneMore · 04/05/2020 14:15

having children is the worst thing you can do for the environment

This is a good argument for killing yourself.

DollyDoneMore · 04/05/2020 14:15

...or someone else.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/05/2020 14:21

Quorn sausages ad, annoyed people too, fuck knows why lol
