Will I be going on holiday to Greece at the end of July?

We have booked flights and accommodation (in a private villa) separately. We can cancel the villa until the end of May and get a refund, bit would go if it was feasible. What do you think are our chances?

Zero chance I would say, sorry op. I don’t think international travel will be on the cards for the rest of this year realistically.

Maybelatte · 04/05/2020 20:09

No. My Mum has a holiday booked to Spain for mid July and I’ve told her there’s no way it’ll happen, she doesn’t believe me.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 04/05/2020 20:17

I looked into Mystic Megs Balls and she said no.

TinRoofRusty · 04/05/2020 20:18

I'd go.

SomewhereEast · 04/05/2020 20:19

Its perfectly possible to say that you don't think overseas travel is on the cards this year without being an arse about it, it really is.

Gawdsake2020 · 04/05/2020 20:21

If 3 pages of No’s hasn’t convinced you yet.. here’s another no.

Patchworksack · 04/05/2020 20:27

Sympathies, OP, it is crap. We are usually a) fairly last minute and b) have cheap and cheerful holidays, driving to a caravan somewhere in France, but this is the year we saved up, planned a dream holiday, booked long haul flights.... and realistically the best we can hope for is that it's deemed not safe to go and our insurance will pay up. I think even if the flights go ahead it would be a very different experience to what we had planned - miserable social distancing measures was not what we had envisaged. You're not even supposed to be sad about it because you are still alive and what more do you want?

LycraLovingLass · 04/05/2020 20:31

We are booked for tenerife in October but can't see it happening so I highly doubt July will be going ahead.

millymollymoomoo · 04/05/2020 20:38

Might yet be possible. Greece is starting to open up. Chatting with a colleague of mine in Dubai today they are looking at opening up for July If possible. I would definitely get on a plane and travel if allowed!

schnubbins · 04/05/2020 20:38

No!

TurquoiseDress · 04/05/2020 20:55

We are booked to travel to France late July, flights & accommodation booked separately.

The parents in law are due to join us- they are travelling from another EU country

DH is absolutely adamant we will all be going, whereas I'm more...realistic.
Personally I don't think we'll be able to travel easily between European countries, unless we self isolate for 14 days either side etc

It's tricky as when we have discussed this, DH says I'm being all negative as I don't want to be on holiday with the in-laws, which is kind of unfair as we all do get on well.

I understand he wants the DCs to see their grandparents as soon as possible, equally, my parents have not seen the DC since March and they live in the same country as us (UK)

My concern is whether it's going to be sensible to travel during a pandemic.

Sydneylover1 · 04/05/2020 20:58

Possibly. The unlocking of the Greek lockdown started today with the next 2 stages due on 11th May and 1st June (but reviews will take place daily so action can be taken quickly if infection rates rise).

Villa owners have been told that they can possibly open up to tourists from 15th June. Greek PM is due to announce more detail on the June plans on 18th May.

It’s a moving situation so nobody can say with certainty what will happen (unless you already know that you don’t wish to travel).

Rebootingagain · 04/05/2020 21:10

Eve if you an get there without self isolating for 14 days on arrival, I really doubt you will be allowed back into the UK without self isolating on return (if allowed back at all)

Plus, if the situation worsens while you are out there and Boris (finally) closes the borders, you have no hope in hell of your insurance covering you and could be stuck out there indefinitely, which I guess is fine if you can afford it and don't need to work.

Anyone considering international trade this summer must be a bit nuts in my humble opinion. The risks of it not happening, or not getting back, or losing all your money are just to great

Easilyanxious · 04/05/2020 21:37

@latebreakfast that's what concerns me with paying in full getting the money back although ours is with jet2 so should be better as I don't want vouchers as wont be going with them for next year as they don't go where we want to go for next year as we have decided if this years is cancelled as we have saved all money for it , to maybe go a little further afield and better next year as will have this years money and time to save
Assuming next year will be ok but have to be a little optimistic
I think countries will be very wary of saying they won't be having people from certain countries though as this could hurt them in the future and by July no one knows who's country will be worse or who will have under slightly better control and for the 100th time the uk does not have the worst death rate in Europe why do people keep spouting this

Easilyanxious · 04/05/2020 21:40

Also be very concerned about picking this up abroad and having to go to hospital there , would insurance coverage if , being in hospital where English isn't first language etc
Or arriving having symptoms then having to isolate for 2 weeks in a small apartment in hot sun
Just can't see how you can social distance in a hotel or larger complex what will they do time slots for the pool ??

tenlittlecygnets · 04/05/2020 21:47

No. We've resigned ourselves to no holiday this year. Bollocks to it.

crustycrab · 05/05/2020 18:10

"Some people really need to grow up and smell the roses."

Isn't it "wake up and smell the coffee"

unchienandalusia · 05/05/2020 18:12

Do you read / watch the news?

Giffgaff99 · 05/05/2020 18:16

For the people who said no you won't be going - do you have inside knowledge of future travel plans??? No, thought not. No one knows what it's going to be like in July. I have a holiday too mid July and hope to go. I hope everyone booked to go away, who still wants to go, will get to go

Boom45 · 05/05/2020 18:21

I'm booked to fly to family in Spain in July - not Greece but it has been far worse hit. Spain is beginning to open up again slowly, so I'm watching closely what's happening over the next few weeks. It's unlikely but not impossible I'd say. I havent paid for accommodation or anything so I can just sit tight and wait, if I'd booked a hotel and I had option to cancel I'd probably do that and not risk the money.

Boom45 · 05/05/2020 18:22

And I dont think we need to worry about the borders getting closed late July. If they're gonna do it then it will happen way before that.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 05/05/2020 18:35

The Greek actually want tourism to restart

If there are flights, I think you may be able to go

If you want to

Purplequalitystreet · 05/05/2020 18:41

At the moment I'm debating whether I'll get to the Lakes in October. So I'd be very surprised unfortunately. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Runbitchrun · 05/05/2020 18:49

I’ve got a holiday booked for Greece at the end of August. So far I’ve only paid the deposit and due to pay the rest early June. I’m 99% sure I won’t bother paying it as I don’t think it will happen.
