To ask for THE holy grail vacuum cleaner?

Live in a small cottage type mid terrace.
Me DP, 2 under 5yo.

All downstairs is slate flooring which is slightly uneven - so it would have to have REALLY good suction.
All upstairs and staircase carpeted apart from bathroom.

We had a Henry which was fab and really made the (quite old) carpet look great after vacuuming but it's weight and bulk was a real problem when manoeuvring around the house and constantly falling over.

We went for the cordless shark as I loved the idea of just whizzing around the house with it but it's useless on the slightly wonky stairs and picking up bigger pieces of fluff that we tend to accumulate around the house with all the day to day goings on. It needs waaayyy to much maintenance to maintain any suction and it's absolutely useless on the slate tiles too. And do not get me started on attempting to vacuum the car.

So ideally we need something with really strong suction but smaller/lighter than the Henry a few different attachments would be a bonus. Corded is fine.

Any recommendations would be really appreciated as we are at the end of our tether with this one and have made our minds up to get a new one.

I don't even have pets but wouldn't be without my Miele Cat & Dog. It's amazing.

wholelottahistory · 04/05/2020 08:48

Miele with as much power as possible. I have a 1600W bought before the eu ban. Now I think the max here is 900W but after Brexit who knows.....?

FOJN · 04/05/2020 09:35

I've just checked mine and noted it's not a miele cat and dog it's a Miele Solution Hepa 5000, I ordered the cat and dog but now I remember it got lost en route to me and the company didn't have another in stock so they sent me an upgraded mode. It's 2200 watts, you won't be able to buying that powerful now so if you can find one second hand then I'd go for it. It comes with a few different heads, one of which is a rotating brush for deep carpet cleaning.

FOJN · 04/05/2020 09:36

buy anything oh for an edit button or a more thorough approach to proof reading!

Bumsmet · 04/05/2020 09:48

I lovemy Miele! I‘ve got one of the bagless ones and it puts my Dyson (previous hoover) to shame

pigdogridesagain · 04/05/2020 09:49

I've got a Henry and a shark. I really don't understand the shark fan club! Constantly needs emptying, blocks extremely easily and gets tangled with hair from dd constantly ( should have got the one with extra options for no hair tangles) Henry while cumbersome on the stairs is like an old workhorse, in fact the stairs are the only place the shark gets used in nowadays. Expensive lesson to learn!

NurseDoris · 04/05/2020 20:29

Does anyone with the Miele have problems with hair getting wrapped round the brush?? I've two cats, one sheds a lot and one has long hair...hate my Dyson as too cumbersome, a pain to empty and very large!

Thisisworsethananticpated · 04/05/2020 20:32

Henry , only Henry for me

Oly4 · 04/05/2020 20:33

Henry.. every time

Haffiana · 04/05/2020 20:45

I have a Miele, but I succumbed to gadget lust a couple of months ago and bought a Dyson V11. The Miele has not been used once since I got the Dyson...

We have a mix of floors, tile, wood, very uneven wood and carpet. Large London house, three floors. It works perfectly on all of them and picks up everything. Suction easily as good as the Miele, and better on some surfaces as the head is motorised. The best thing is that I have gradually moved from getting the Miele out and 'doing the vacuuming' to getting the Dyson off the wall and doing bits here and there when needed or when I feel like it. Somehow vacuuming has completely stopped being a chore. It is fantastic.

It is also expensive, but I would further recommend getting a spare filter so that when one is drying after being washed you can use the other one.

Advice79 · 04/05/2020 20:45

Miele cat and dog

Hotcuppatea · 04/05/2020 20:47

I've tried several. Just recently went back to the Henry and it's the best decision I've made in a long time.

CuppaZa · 04/05/2020 20:49

Dyson V11. There seems to be a lot of people not liking Dyson. I hate hoovering, but this one makes it a breeze and is so much quicker than any other hoover I’ve had. One of my best buys by far

EmmaStone · 04/05/2020 21:12

Another Miele devotee. I've just bought a new C3 Cat and Dog (and rather bafflingly, it appears to have increased in price by £50 on John Lewis in the 2 weeks since I bought it 😲) to replace a VERY old previous Miele (which still works, but DH did something wrong to the filters and it started to smell every time I used it. He's now taken it apart and given it a really good clean, so hopefully it can come back into commission - 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs).

My mum had (maybe still has) a Miele, and having used it years ago, it convinced me (plus the endless recommendations). I had a Dyson upright once, great for a year, then just pants. I d9 have a handheld Dyson for little jobs, and that's quite good. I also bought a robot hoover at new year, and that's rather good too for in between jobs.

MissConductUS · 04/05/2020 21:13

Another vote for Miele. I'll never own another vacuum.

1Morewineplease · 04/05/2020 21:24

Miele for me.

Won’t ever buy a Dyson again and we ditched our Shark after a month.

If I couldn’t get a Miele then I’d go for a Sebo. Had one years ago... brilliant but couldn’t get hold of the model I wanted as a replacement so we got a Miele. Will never look back.

Sheldonoscopy · 04/05/2020 21:27

This interests me too! I have a Henry but it stinks! I’ve changed the filter but nothing, still smells bad. Is this a known issue?

I’m tempted to go with the Miele now, can anyone tell me, is it lightweight? I’ve spinal issues and struggle so need something light and easy to use. Not fussed about the price but I can’t do my own stairs, would anyone recommend a separate lightweight vac for this issue?

ReluctantHillCrester · 04/05/2020 22:03

Miele C3 powerline just has the one head (I only use this for hard floors)

Miele C3 Cat and Dog comes with a "Turbo Brush" which is the rotating head. I use this on carpet.

I don't have pets but I do have long hair, and yes that does get caught around the brush head.

The Miele is my deep clean and I use a Dyson cordless for a quick once over. The Miele is hands down an incredibly powerful vacuum cleaner.

I will leave it to this chap to show you the effectiveness, he compares dozens of makes and models of vacuum cleaners. The video starts after he has covered his carpet in his dog's hair and shows the difference the turbo brush makes.

TamaraDeLempicky · 04/05/2020 22:04

Shark liftaway is amazing although you have to use the carpet mode for hard floors 🤔

EmeraldShamrock · 04/05/2020 22:08

Miele C3. I Iove the different settings on the miele unlike the dyson for sofas and mats.

George441 · 08/12/2020 08:50

@WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo

Miele are the suckiest I’ve ever had, I use that for the big while house clean & a little Dyson v6 rechargeable for little messes & quick fixes.
I am also voting Miele.
Runssometimes · 08/12/2020 10:31

Given you have dogs I too recommend the Miele cat and dog bagless. We have a lab and a Lego loving child and it’s just brilliant. Not too heavy to carry round either.

sunshinesupermum · 08/12/2020 10:41

I can't afford the Miele so went for the AEG CX7-2-45AN Animal Cordless 2-in-1 Detachable Handheld Vacuum Cleaner-it's not as heavy as Henry was (which is why I gave him away) has great suction and easy to manoeuvre. I have a cat and both my daughter and I shed hair! So far it's been fab.

Blobby10 · 08/12/2020 11:02

My OH has a ten year old Miele Cat and Dog and it still has more suction than my four year old Henry! When Henry dies (or I kick him out) I will replace with the Miele.
