To ask for THE holy grail vacuum cleaner?

Live in a small cottage type mid terrace.
Me DP, 2 under 5yo.

All downstairs is slate flooring which is slightly uneven - so it would have to have REALLY good suction.
All upstairs and staircase carpeted apart from bathroom.

We had a Henry which was fab and really made the (quite old) carpet look great after vacuuming but it's weight and bulk was a real problem when manoeuvring around the house and constantly falling over.

We went for the cordless shark as I loved the idea of just whizzing around the house with it but it's useless on the slightly wonky stairs and picking up bigger pieces of fluff that we tend to accumulate around the house with all the day to day goings on. It needs waaayyy to much maintenance to maintain any suction and it's absolutely useless on the slate tiles too. And do not get me started on attempting to vacuum the car.

So ideally we need something with really strong suction but smaller/lighter than the Henry a few different attachments would be a bonus. Corded is fine.

Any recommendations would be really appreciated as we are at the end of our tether with this one and have made our minds up to get a new one.

Miele Cat & Dog. Nothing else measures up.

icecreamcrackers · 03/05/2020 21:55

Shark all the way for us, I have a lift away and handheld one.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 03/05/2020 21:59

Miele for sure.

DM has a retriever and has the cat n dog one.

I just bought a bagless model, the C-something Excellence Blizzard.... about 250 off Ao.com. It is amazing and great for uneven hard floors - we have 90 yo floorboards and it is great on them.

BelfryBat · 03/05/2020 22:01

I've got a robot made by THAT company and I'll be quite honest, any robot that functions is preferable to one you have to lug round

oknowimscared · 03/05/2020 22:02

I hate “Henry” style vacs - I find them really cumbersome to manoeuvre round the house and a nightmare to store. My Sebo Felix has served me well for years. Lightweight, powerful, highly recommended.

VenusTiger · 03/05/2020 22:03

My Miele cats and dogs is awesome - two friends have bought the same having used mine before buying - it has a hard floor head and a beater bar head - it's brilliant! It has pulled up the carpet in a few corners upstairs but not a problem.

PapayaCoconut · 03/05/2020 22:05

Miele cat and dog. Had mine for ten years and it works just as well as ever.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/05/2020 22:05

I’m going to say Miele as I use one at work and the suction is excellent.

Canadianpancake · 03/05/2020 22:05

Does it matter which model of Shark lift-away you get?

VenusTiger · 03/05/2020 22:06

@overweightcat this is mine OP and we have cats

Hmm my brush seems kind of sh*t now.

VenusTiger · 03/05/2020 22:09

supposed to have attached link there? Hmm anyway, it's the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog - mine cost £350 about 3yrs ago

VenusTiger · 03/05/2020 22:11

🙈🙈 I need to go to bed early it seems!

HT96 · 03/05/2020 22:13

Shark without a doubt, the suction full power lifts my carpets... and the amount of DUST it takes out of the carpet on first use is VILE 🤢 also great on hard floor if you get that version!

lokoho · 03/05/2020 22:14

Shark liftaway

overweightcat · 04/05/2020 08:19

Thanks everyone I think it's time to start looking for a Miele

@Merryoldgoat baring in mind we have 2 messy DCs and a dog and our house gets MESSY I find the brush rolls and everything needs taking out and cleaning a lot and cutting all the hair out of. Filters and stuff need cleaning often or the suction will disappear if they're really bad. I find it's not too great at picking up bigger pieces and gets blocked frequently BUT if it's for day to day whizzing around picking up a couple of crumbs it's fine.
You might get on with it better than I do.

I just need something for a proper clean that gets in all the nooks and crannies and corners and doesn't need cleaning so much.

Shark liftaway

Microzilla · 04/05/2020 08:25

changemind what make of brush do you have? Can you recommend it? What is the suction like and is it a bagless one. I was thinking of upgrading mine from a witch style broom to a corded brush from John Lewis but have read mixed reviews about it not being effective on shag carpet.

overweightcat · 04/05/2020 08:25

Does anyone know the difference between the Miele c3 cat & dog (red) and the Miele C3 Powerline (black)?

OP posts:
MakingASilkPurse · 04/05/2020 08:32

Definitely Miele C3 for me. Tried a Shark corded and found it to be way less powerful than the Miele with poor suction when using the attachments, so went back to my old Miele. Was weird because we have a handheld Shark that is fab.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/05/2020 08:36

Miele cat & dog is the best vacuum I've ever used. Copes with my very sheddy cat well. It's also the only vacuum I've ever owned that hasn't tried to kill or injure me.

caribooshriek · 04/05/2020 08:38

The Miele!

altiara · 04/05/2020 08:39

I’ve got a shark lift away dual floor one - here’s the full title:
Shark Anti Hair Wrap Allergy DuoClean Pet Vacuum Cleaner

It ticked every box I needed.
It’s really good as I have carpets and tiled floors. I use the lift away bit for the stairs.
It’s also bagless and the cord is really long.
I did feel it was quite heavy to start with while I got used it compared to my old dyson.

Branleuse · 04/05/2020 08:40

Im less than impressed with my shark (corded liftaway)

woodencoffeetable · 04/05/2020 08:42

miele cat&dog is brilliant.
but if you want smaller, bosch does an eco something which is small and light and still sucks like a champion.
