I've done this in AIBU for the voting feature. IF (and a big IF) schools go back on June 1st, will you be sending yours?

YABU - NO

YANBU - YES

I’m guessing all of you on this thread who are fine about sending your dc back to school en mass don’t have anyone vulnerable in your households?

Asthmatics are vulnerable and 1 in 11 children have asthma (1.1 million) Granted some may be mild and some will be nursery /baby aged but that's more than 1 child per class.

AJPTaylor · 03/05/2020 18:23

Yes. I would send her tomorrow. And I would get on a train to work in a heartbeat.

FrippEnos · 03/05/2020 18:25

@Biscuit0110
It is also in the Times today, and school reopening (phased) will be announced on Thursday

The times has been printing a huge amount of bullshit about education, teachers and schools since this started.

FrippEnos · 03/05/2020 18:26

@Bluntness100

Don’t be daft, primary kids aren’t super spreaders and barely get ill. Their parents are usually in the age range of people with a very very low fatality rate.

There is very little evidence either way.

Chienloup · 03/05/2020 18:27

I'd not have a choice, I work in schools. If schools are back, I have to go back, so they will too. Not ideal.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/05/2020 18:33

There is very little evidence either way

This is nuts really, especially when it comes to the shielding group who have already been identified. All it would have taken is to include a section on the government register to ask how many school children are within the home and their ages and they could put their hands on some really useful information that will be pertinent to viable education solutions.

MrsPear · 03/05/2020 18:49

It has been over 2 weeks since the peak. I’m well informed. This country is on the brink of economic collapse. There will be no jobs for the majority. I’m sorry but we need to put on our big pants and accept risk and re open.

Headbangersandmash · 03/05/2020 18:56

The government should wait to see the data that emerges from other countries starting to reopen their schools. Denmark's R rose after schools opened and soon we will see what happens in France and Germany.

It will be costlier to the economy if schools reopen then close again.

cantory · 03/05/2020 19:03

@MrsPear and why is no other country doing that?

runrabbitrunrunrun · 03/05/2020 19:13

Fuck YES!

TheGirlFromStoryville · 03/05/2020 19:20

I won't be sending DS (Yr7) back on June 1st. Far too soon imo - plus DH is in a vulnerable category.
Quite happy to continue lessons at home if need be, I'm SAHM so fortunately no worries about work.
(I still think the govt is half heartedly pursuing its herd immunity idea)

Scruffyoak · 03/05/2020 19:23

Yes. Soon as officially allowed.

Delta1 · 03/05/2020 19:41

@mrspear completely agree.

ChrissieKeller61 · 03/05/2020 19:44

@TheGirlFromStoryville of course it is, it’s not even hiding the fact. What’s his name stuffed up by actually saying herd immunity and some of you will die out loud

OnTheMoors · 03/05/2020 19:50

The people who have answered yes with great gusto. Why so keen ?

AJPTaylor · 03/05/2020 19:55

Why so keen?
Because the lockdown was to enable the NHS not to get swamped and prepare. We are driving the country off a cliff. I have no income. DD1 has lost her job already.
The risk to us is relatively small.

Cam77 · 03/05/2020 20:08

It won’t happen unless new cases are in the low hundreds. Which is possible but I wouldn’t put money on it. Otherwise you’re just throwing a bucket of fuel on a still burning fire.

KoalasandRabbit · 03/05/2020 20:15

Probably not but depends exactly what is proposed and what happens in other countries. Got a year 8 and one year 9, neither want to go back and both learning well at home and I can be with them so flexibility.

Cam77 · 03/05/2020 20:19

China has only just reopened schools across the country - after having virtually zero cases (certainly relative to the area of the country/population) for a good few weeks now. But children/teachers are wearing face masks throughout the school day, pretty hellish, and having their temperature electronically checked on arriving at school every day: over 37 degrees and straight off to hospital in a van for a test. If you want things “back to normal” as quickly as possible, that’s the kind of no nonsense approach you might need for the mid term. It’s also why China knocked their initial peak on the head so quickly.

People thinking that we can all just “get back to normal” and the virus will just be a bit of unpleasant background noise for a few more months as we otherwise go peacefully about our business in busy shops, schools, workplaces - could be in for quite a reality check.

Dutchesss · 03/05/2020 20:21

I'm really enjoying having my children at home with me but I'm equally worried about them missing months of education. I would send them back.

Frozenfan2019 · 03/05/2020 20:32

I had pneumonia in 2016. It was awful. I was ill, really ill for two weeks and then took six weeks to recover to a point where I was back at work properly. I haven't been ill like that before and it was quite scary. I had panic attacks long after because of the breathing problems I've had.

As far as I know my life was never really in danger but that doesn't mean it wasn't a horrible experience. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, certainly not my children or my parents (who would no doubt be in contact with my children- I doubt I could keep them away)

I am a part time teacher so they will most likely have to go back but I will wait and see exactly what school proposees. I actually think mornings and afternoons as separate sessions makes more sense so that the lunchtime issues are avoided. I also think older children should wait longer because of schools buses. As well as that I think they should do it alphabetically so the children from one family are in at the same time.

Until the government make any announcements schools won't make any decisions so the times can't possibly know exactly what will happen and when. It will be up to schools leaders and the government to work it out together.

Headbangersandmash · 03/05/2020 20:33

I'm keen for my y12 to go back as no modifications have been announced for next year's exams and she's hopefully off to uni. She's also looking forward to the social side of school .

My y9 wants the social aide of school but is probably ok at home.

Frozenfan2019 · 03/05/2020 20:37

I actually don't think he will announce a date on Thursday, I think he will end lockdown and suggests that schools will start a staggered reopening once "science suggests it is safe" I think they will wait and see what happens in other countries.

Frozenfan2019 · 03/05/2020 20:38

That doesn't mean it won't be June 1st just that he won't announce it yet.

zigaziga · 03/05/2020 20:44

Yes absolutely I will although I imagine at the rate mine go through colds (they have one now, God knows how we picked that up) we’ll be in and out a lot as I’ll have to remove for 7 days every time they have a cough.

I agree with @AJPTaylor and @MrsPear
